Golding displayed in The Lord of the Flies that the nature of mankind and society can be both inherently good and evil through the personalities and characteristics the characters have. These characters create an equal balance between being good and bad which shows that mankind can do both it just depends on their actions. The character Ralph is displayed as the most powerful boy on the island, despite his size. Ralph shows numerous of times and doesn't want to be in control of all the power, he just wants to find a way off the island and thinks of ways that can help them for example, "There's another thing. Piggy shows how smart he is by thinking of a way to get all the others back together and says, "We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They'll come when they hear us." Piggy believes in civilization, law, and reasoning through problems, but he rarely does any of the work because of his obesity and asthma. Piggy also has a tendency to lecture and criticize the others which make the others furious and leads them to single him out, and to make fun of him. In this novel Piggy is shown as both inherited you bad and good because he helps the others think of ways to improve where they live and how to be rescued but he also criticizes others which leads to tensions. Simon is a symbol a priest like figure where he confronts and reveals the darkest aspects of human nature he shows that the nature and mankind is inherently good by all the good deeds he does. Simon is the only boy from Jack's choir who didn't become a hunter, he is also is the most generous for example he helped Ralph build the shelters because he wanted to. Simon also is the bravest by doing things to help others even though it is scary, "Through the forest by himself? Now?", "We can't spare more than one." Simon pushed his way to Ralph's elbow. "I'll go if you like. I don't mind, honestly." He does the things that no one else wants to do and he doesn't complain at all. Then their is Rodger, a boy who loves to cause pain and symbolizes the desire to hurt others he is showing that the nature of mankind and society is inheritely bad by hurting and killing others.
