What first was an organized lifestyle on the island, quickly turns into a battle of pride and survival.They soon become fearful of themselves not truly knowing what one is capable of. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies conveys the theme that evil is not only in us, it's constantly around us. Evil is always present, but the amount that shows depends on the person. When the hunters were chanting it states, “Ralph watched them, envious, and resentful”(75). This shows that even Ralph wanted to join in on the killing. Since Ralph is chief he couldn’t participate in the killings, and he felt envious of the bond between Jack and his hunters. Piggy also gets affected by the evil when Jack broke his specs piggy says “ just you wait”(72). Even though Piggy is usually a rational, kindhearted person even he lost his temper at that moment. When Roger kills piggy, Jack says, “ See? See? That's what you'll get”(181). Jack never feels a bit of remorse he just feels placid. His way of thinking has changed so much that he lost that sense of what’s right and what’s wrong. Also, when Robert was pretending to be the pig, the book states, “Behind him was Roger, fighting to get close”(114). Even if it is pretend, Roger wanted to be as close as possible which proves his thirst for death. Also using Robert as an animal is showing that they will hurt anything human or non-human. When Jack first encountered the pig it says, “He tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill what was swallowing him up”(51). Jack is feeling that urge to kill even if he doesn’t have to for survival. It also means that he’s fighting with the evil inside of him.
