”If way to the better there be, it exacts a full look at the worst” written by Thomas Hardy describes the reality that we need to as a society, teach and not ignore parts of history regardless of events that have occurred. Everything is important from the past and will help the future learn from mistakes. From our mistakes we learn, so we can’t put them aside to be forgotten. Alan Sillitoe, in the book of short stories The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner writes based off of a society in which he grew up in, and what he had experienced. Having grown up in the “Slums” he had a clear understanding of what the worst could be and chose to write so that the world would have a better understanding about real life occurrences, and how to avoid them. In all the short stories the people living within are experiencing poverty and different unfortunate events. In the “Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner” Smith comes from a family who are not very wealthy and have to steal in order to live. Because of this, he has ended up in the borstal. Poverty is shown in this story because it wasn't his choice to steal however because of the family he was born into he didn’t have much of a choice. Another example of poverty used in a story by Alan is in “The Decline and Fall of Frankie Buller” story. In this story the boys in the “gang” run by Frankie Buller live in the slums just like Alan did. They have grown up to be tough and fight other boys from other districts because of where they came from. The effect of poverty growing up can really affect the way you act and present yourself.
