People today live lives of comfort when compared to the way our ancestors used to live. When they needed to finish their work, they would often do so without the help of machines. This made their work very time consuming and tiresome. However, throughout the history of human civilization, people and cultures have created machines to aid them in their various works. While these machines vary in terms of complexity and scope, there is one specific machine that has helped people maintain the outward appearance of their homes: the lawnmower. The company Ransomes, Sims, and Jefferies introduced the petrol motor powered mower in the early twentieth century and experienced much success. By this time, petrol powered mowers had edged their steam powered counterparts out of the market. In the United States other developers also began to develop their own gas-powered mowers. One such developer was Colonel Edwin George, who was the first United States manufacturer to do so. However, this type of powered mower was seldom used by the average U.S. consumer, which was mainly since the U.S. was experiencing an economic depression, and the petrol mower was often seen as a luxury item. That all changed by the 1960’s though, as almost every American household was home to a gasoline powered lawnmower. This was due to the mower’s new affordability due to the implementation of plastic parts, as well as the increased economic prosperity of the United States following the end of the second World War. Today, new technologies continue to bring in new advancements in lawnmower development. One such development is the introduction of low emission gasoline engines with catalytic converters, which in turn help cut down on the amount of air pollution produced. Other advancements go as far as to improve the quality of life of others in the neighborhood by creating improved muffling devices to help reduce noise pollution from the mower. Other types
