In both poems “The Laughing Heart” and “The Journey,” both poems share the same and different poetic devices to show their message and or theme. In the poem “The Laughing Heart” Charles Bukowski and “The Journey” by Oliver Mary, both poems are developing their themes by the same and different poetic devices which are figurative language, imagery, and tone. In the poem “The Laughing Heart” Charles Bukowski is expressing his theme and or message of always stay positive, and take the opportunities that you are given using figurative language,imagery, and the specific word choice. You can see this is true because when it says “The gods will offer you chances. Know them. Take them.” This is an example of figurative language and this helped show that the message is that when you have the opportunity for a better life, you have to take it, and this develops the theme of take the opportunities you're given and always stay positive. You can see this is true because the poems says “you didn't stop” which is an example literal language because it's being literal and saying you didn't stop, which developed the theme. Another example of how you can see how the theme was developed is when it uses the poetic device of imagery when it says “as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds,” this means that when you kept going, they did everything to stop you, but you kept going which helped develop the theme of keep on going and don't stop.
