The Last Meow Summary

For the mass population of pet owners, pets are considered a treasure, so the conversation of how much is to be spend on them is a hot debut. I do agree with Burkhart Bilger's Argument that, “Our love affair with pets our pets has gotten out of control.” but I contend with the ideal that it is a widespread problem. I still insist that owners should show attention and love to their pet but so without the overspending in regards to your income. This topic is brought up in Bilgers’ article “The Last Meow” where he uses different facts, examples, and stories that back up my position.

It is true that there are people out there who are out of control on their financial spending in regards to their pet.This is the case for many due to the amount

of finances needed in pet veterinary care. In Bilgers article he wrote about a time he visited the A.M.C and the article mainly consist of the story of a cat named Lady and her owners the Leverings. Bilgers states, “Lady’s owners were different, Like many of the rumpled, red-eyed people I sat with in the A.M.C waiting room, they could scarcely afford their sympathies.” Like the Leverings , I knew a family who spent thousands on medical procedures for their cat, but once they paid for an procedure and it was complete, the cat would receive a different medical problem. This cycle continued until sadly the cat passed away.
Although there are examples of people overspending, I contend that the majority of owners do not do so.

Most pets are put down or run away rather than have gone through expensive treatment. Even in the aforementioned article “The Last Meow” it mentions a statistics that states, “ Every year, while pets like theirs are saved by the most elaborate means some six million strays are put to sleep.” I have personal experience with my first ever dog whom I loved and the sweetest beagle named Snoopy. In his adult life, Snoopy had ear infection, to which we laid out the money for his ear medication. We paid for the medicine because it was a reasonable price that wouldn’t financially harm us.When he got really old he suffered from back discus problems which hindered his ability to walk and it slowly got worse. The only option was to pay for an expensive surgery that most likely wouldn't lead to a long term solution for is back. We didn’t have all the money in the world so the obvious decision was made and we put him to sleep. In cases like mine, people do not give up the money because of unrighteous selfish reasons but because of their obligation to take care of a family or just themselves. Plus it is just common sense not to go into debut for a pet and the few examples of people who do overspend are considered to be financially irresponsible

people.
Some will argue against my position, stating that pets are worth the financial risk. The family that Bilgers writes about, the Leverings, are a prime example of those who would believe otherwise. In the article “The Last Meow” Bilgers quote Ladys owners, Shawn and Karen Levering state, “I don’t know what I would have done without the cats.” they also stated, “It would have been hard not to have lady around.” In my experience with those pet owners whom I talked to, most of them consider pets as family.I am not against loving your pet, infact I am all for that, but like the passing of a family member you have to move on and I am confident that your loved one would want you to take care of yourself rather than going into financial tribulation.
If you look at the annual statistics of how much is spent on pet care, it is quite obvious that there are some people who overdo it. Though other facts, experiences, and stories we can see that those people who overspend on their pet are the minority of the collaborate pet owners. Which in turn means that the majority of pet owners do not go into debut over their pet. For me this is a situation where the problem is real and there but just so small that it could be over exaggerated and unnecessary.
