The International Space Station is the doorway to the future of mankind and the world as it is known. The scientific and medical discoveries that will be made on the station could create billions of dollars annually. A plan like this, arranged to benefit the whole world economy, should sound like a good idea to every person, but some believe that the ISS is too risky, too ineffective, or too costly to create. Whether or not the space station is worth the money, time, and effort, one thing is clear, everyone is interested in this virtual floating laboratory and what assets or liabilities it will bring. The future of scientific experimentation and exploration may be located, not on earth, but on the man made island called the International Space Station. Of all the factors that go into building a space station, construction of the massive object is the most tedious objective. During the building of the ISS, tensions have run high several times when deadlines were missed or funds were not available. This space station is the most expansive mission the world has ever encountered. The International Space Station will be a fifteen country mission. When finished, it will boast over an acre of solar panels for heating and energy, have a volume roughly sizable to two jumbo jets, and contain four times the electrical power of the Russian space station, Mir. It will take approximately forty-five flights over the next five years to assemble the one hundred pieces of the station while circling the orbit of the earth (Goldin 11). R.P. McMurphy is a lively, rebellious, and rational patient that has recently been escorted into the insane asylum. Once in the bin, Randle becomes the self-proclaimed champion of the rights of the other ward patients, his adversary being Nurse Ratched (New York Times). He scrutinizes the asylum and the patients deciding that he needs to lighten the atmosphere. Throughout society, there are many individuals who influence the growth/development of others. Ones influence on others could either have a positive or negative impact on an individual's life. Throughout Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, McMurphy's arrival on the ward influences the way the patients seek their own freedom. McMurphy sympathizes for the patient, not wanting to see them suffer in this “cuckoo nest” of a hospital. Such oppressive control is too much for McMurphy to bear and therefore he begins to challenge the Nurse’s control over all the patients in the wards, symbolically, all of mankind. Kesey’s title, One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, signifies how the patients in the ward are able to free themselves under Nurse Ratched’s oppressive
Another way that these results could have been predicted without anyone getting stung is by looking at the cartoon of the guy whose enlarged body parts represent how many S1 cells are in each area. While it doesn’t necessarily come from the last lecture notes, I felt it was an important principle of sorts to include in this essay. Since scientists know where more of these S1 cells are and they also know that the nociceptor cells are also all over the body, it might be possible for them to hypothesize that areas with more S1 cells would have a greater response and therefore the subject would feel more pain. This way doesn’t require anyone to be hurt in any way, shape or form so while it may not be as accurate, it still has the possibility to work.
Ideally, the ad intends to draw these adults and children who struggle from within about who and what they are. It also reaches out to those transgender, which have already exposed their lifestyle. Even, individuals crossed between a man and a woman and are frightened by what people will think of them. On the contrary, the ad also focuses on drawn in the public, in hopes that they would gain a better understanding of what it means to be transgender. In addition, the ad wants to raise society’s awareness and educate them in the hopes that the public will open their minds to transgender. The message insinuates that anyone should be candid to choose what they aspire to be. Besides, they deserve to do so without judgment, loss of respect and scrutiny of their character. However, this is not the case, revealing this part of themselves comes with criticism belittlement and discrimination.
Outer space has always intrigued the human mind. Ever since humans have inhabited the Earth, they have always looked to the heavens. Ptolemy, who lived over two thousand years ago, dreamed of being with the stars. He said, “I know that I am mortal by nature, and ephemeral; but when I trace at my pleasure the windings to and fro of the heavenly bodies I no longer touch the earth with my feet: I stand in the presence of Zeus himself and take my fill of ambrosia” (Tyson). At that time, reaching the “final frontier” was not even remotely possible. Even in the late 19th century, few people believed such a feat was possible, and yet, a mere half a century later, the first man was launched into space (Irvine 5). How did the human race go from just dreaming about space to actually launching human beings into space in such a short time?
Currently the citizens living in the United States are imprisoned within the binary of two genders. It is only acceptable for a person to identify as a male or a female. Depending on the gender the person identifies, as there is an expectation of how that person should look and act. The person identifying as the specific gender, must maintain the gender norms that are in place. These gender binaries are so prevalent in our lives; it is to the point where a large group of Americans are being overlooked. This group of Americans identifies as transgender, which means they do not fit society’s expectations of how a specific gender should look and behave. (gaycenter.org, 2012). When considering this topic, one might ask themselves why explore space? We explore space to compare other planets with the earth and to study the sun, to explore the universe while finding if intelligent life exists, for satellites to improve communications, weather forecasting, navigation, resource monitoring, and “to create a focal point for a new intellectual renaissance” (Ruzic).
Significance: The significance associated with these claims take on the vast amount of oppression transgender and intersex individuals deal with. In “Cisgender Privilege”, Evin Taylor compiles a subversive list of struggles transgendered individuals face daily that cisgender people are unaware of and take for granted. To illustrate, some examples of these privileges cisgender people acquire include using a public restroom without worry and not having to prove one’s gender. To expand additionally on the transgender bathroom conflict, the reading entitled “Bodies and Bathrooms” explores the story of transgendered girl named Coy. Her elementary school told Coy and her family about how she was no longer permitted to use the girl’s restroom, but rather a unisex one instead. People have been venturing out into the universe for many years now. In addition to satellites, both women and men astronauts have traveled into space to collect data about the universe. The first human being, the first animal, and the first spacecraft in orbit, were all achievements of the Soviet Union.
“Why should we go into space? What is the justification for spending all the effort and money on getting a few lumps of moon rocks? Aren’t there better causes here on Earth?”- Stephen Hawking. Space is the everlasting, ever growing place where we happen to reside. From the beginning of intelligent life here on Earth, we have wanted to learn. Whether it be simply constructing a fire, or solving the riddles that still puzzle us to this day. Many of the questions we still have are pertaining to space. Are we alone? How did we get here? Where are we going? Many answers can come from exploring space. Getting a “few lumps of moon rock” can answer so many questions we asked ourselves for millennia. Can we truly belong in a place we do not know about? Space exploration will better us now and in the future for several reasons.
Most people think that the costly downside to funding space exploration is a reason to avoid spending money on sciences and instead spend it on problems here on earth, but such funding for space exploration actually promotes economical as well as scientific benefits. Space exploration is an important expenditure for the high cost because of the potential for numerous benefits such as the possibility to find useful resources to cultivate, space exploration and satellites produce many thousands of jobs in our economy, and it creates and discovers newer and better technologies through research and development.
