Popular culture is mistakenly taken for granted as just entertainment rather than as the valuable learning tool it is. One may battle images of the Kardashians or provocative music videos when they hear the words “popular culture.” Such images don’t evoke scholarly thoughts, initially. With certain materialistic aspects of pop culture ingrained in people’s minds, it’s hard to look past them and see the academic value. It’s not always possible to pinpoint where the influence begins, ends, or how potent it is. Nevertheless, pop culture has immense power over how people perceive the world whether it’s easy to identify or not. America being the living body that it is, is always evolving into a new version of itself. The circle of life is constantly editing the faces of the country, and we are Popular culture manages to have strong effects on viewers. The immersion of a country’s pop culture is the most convenient and effective way for people to learn about different cultures. However, the caveat with that is sometimes movies send certain messages without even intending to. David Wong’s, “5 Ways You Don’t Realize Movies are Controlling Your Brain,” covers the subconscious efforts of movies to send messages that may not be explicitly stated or planned on. Wong points out how pop culture is basically the only way people have learned about the world around them, outside of the classroom. Subliminal messages and biases slip through the cracks without even the initial intention, but it’s human nature. The way people can learn from this is by pushing themselves to realize when this occurs, and keep themselves in check about what they are choosing to culturally immerse themselves in. There’s no way to completely filter out misconceptions or bias, however, we should instill a healthy level of skepticism in our culture to promote awareness about how people are receiving their
