The Pangolin Pangolins need protection because they are becoming critically endangered which means they could go extinct. In the two articles, “The Incredible Pangolin Rescue” and “The Amazing Pangolins” shows that the pangolins are great animals and help in different ways. To begin with, pangolins need their own protection because today in the world they are the most trafficked mammal. Joe Levit claims in “The Incredible Pangolin Rescue” that Cambodia gets 10 billion dollars every year because of the criminal activity of wildlife trafficking. Pangolins are used in many different things like accessories “and in Asia, pangolin scales are prized ingredients in traditional medicines” (Levit 21). Not to mention, pangolins are small and gentle animals …show more content…
In both of the articles, it says, the number of pangolins that have been poached in the wildlife has been more than 1 million in the past decade. To summarize, the pangolins are in need of help to not be trafficked and poached. In addition, there are many ways to help save the pangolins from being extinct. Also, in the infographic “The Amazing Pangolins” it says that they have been around for “80 million years, the approximate length of time pangolins have existed – more than 250 times longer than humans” (23). Moreover, people around the world are working to stop trafficking. In Cambodia, one of the best defenders of pangolins is the Wildlife Alliance. The animals they rescue are rehabilitated at the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center. Likewise, these informants keep their eyes and ears open for clues about endangered animals, especially pangolins. “Then, they get a search warrant” because “Wildlife trafficking is a serious crime in Cambodia and their punishments include steep fines and up to five years in prison” (Levit 22). Finally, pangolins are “natural pest controllers” because of their big appetites and eat termites from the forest or other insects that eat wood
The destruction of their habitat and destruction are the two great threats to the gorillas. The places where they are found are poor and densely populated. The land that is set aside for gorillas is being taken over by agriculture. The wire traps that poachers set out for antelope usually end up catching gorillas instead. People kill them for their heads and hands as trophies. The western lowland gorilla is listed as an endangered species.
Save the World: Save the sea otters During the 18th and 19th centuries, sea otters were hunted for their luxurious pelts, and by the early 1900s, the species was believed to be extinct in California. (Carswell) Why do we care you ask, well not only are they super cute and eat with their hands. Apparently, a healthy population of sea otters keeps the sea urchin population in check. An unhealthy or small population of sea otters allows the sea urchin’s number to explode thus decimating kelp beds, which is the sea urchin’s food source, and causing a “chain reaction that depletes the food supply for other marine animals consequently causing their decline.

Wildlife conservationists are constantly working to supervise the rivers, forest, and other natural resources of Africa in order to preserve and protect them through prudent management. In Kenya, laws against trophy hunting has assisted these conservationists in maintaining wildlife populations. However, park rangers face a huge battle against the illegal poaching of these rare trophy animals, such as lions and elephants. In Asia, the demand for ivory continues to surge, despite the long-time ban on its international trade. The demand is so high that the Tanzanian government has developed plans to construct a commercial highway through the Serengeti in order to more efficiently trade goods with Asia (“The Need for Serengeti Watch”). However, the highway will also provide a faster route to the coast for ivory smugglers. The controversy surrounding the highway and its positive or negative effects on the economy, Tanzania as a whole, and the Serengeti is countless. Despite the debate over its benefits and...
There is no news if Yellowstone has caught the perpetrator. Poachers do not care about laws and will kill protected animals for the thrill or money. Therefore, there should be an increase in the measures taken to prevent animal poaching. While the claws and teeth of the animal are used in traditional Asian medicine.
Poaching threatens the dying out of endangered species. Lions have virtually disappeared in Africa causing animal activists to protest for stricter rules on hunting big game. Damian Aspinall, director of the Aspinall Foundation, said,
CITES, or the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, is an international agreement between governments to ensure international trade of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of those species. According to its website, it was first conceived in 1973 and “accords varying degrees of protection to more than 35,000 species of animals and plants, whether they are traded as live specimens, fur coats or dried herbs.” Nature reserves and parks in Asia are not performing satisfactory in their protection of the animals within their grounds. With inadequately patrolled borders, poachers and other criminals sneak in and lay out trap lines and hunt in the only places where these animals are thought to be protected. Hidden away from the outside world, these parks are emptying of their most important residents. Locations in between countries that may have laws specific to poaching are ripe with crime. These so called “border towns” are empty of law enforcement or regulators of any sort. Here, sellers and buyers of endangered products are free to go about their business with no fear of consequence. In the year 2003, 581 leopard skins and 31 tiger skins were seized on the China–Nepal border (Nijman and Shepherd). Even what laws are in place are not enough to deter these
My interest for The Chinese pangolin started when I watched The Wild Kratts on PBS kids. I would always ask my mother if we could go to the zoo to see them. When we would go to the Zoo I would never see them, so I would ask a zookeeper why there were no Chinese at the zoo? I was surprised to find that there were eight species of Chinese pangolin and that they were extremely endangered. One of the threats to Chinese pangolin is being poached for their scales which are used in medicine. Another threat to the Chinese pangolins is that they are hunted for their meat and eaten as a high-end cuisine. Because the killing threats of Chinese pangolins increasing every year, and the good intentions of the African Wildlife Foundation and the ICUN SSC Chinese pangolin
It is not only useful for a cultural aspect but also for an economic plan. Diversity of species is the foundation of a country’s economy especially the country’s tourism. However, we see that species, in particular some rare primates, are disappearing. According to the International
Primatologist Frans de Waal of Emory University, says, “I do think we have special obligations to the great apes as our closest relatives, but if we give rights to apes, what would be the compelling reason not to give rights to monkeys, dogs, rats, and so on?” All animals should have rights but it needs to be kept clearly in mind, that apes are what we, as humans, have descended from. They are our true parents, therefore one would do all they can to help protect their parents. The same needs to be done to ours. Apes are the reason we are here, why our parents are here, along with grandparents, and the rest of our loved ones and as our ancestors, they need our protection. What kind of children would it make us if
Certain animals need more protection than others because they don’t particularly need to be on the list. Animals like the Bangle Tiger or the Siamang are the most threatened besides others because they are loved for their skins or they are wanted as pets. They go through the pet trade there whole life because they are so rare and beautiful. Just because the animals are a prize kill or to have doesn’t mean people should harm or endanger them.
By trading continuously since so many years the existence of these animals is lowering down and therefore now these species come under the category of endangered species which further now has resulted
For these reasons along with many more, I feel like the cheetah should be protected at all costs. There are many reasons why the cheetah is known as an amazing animal, and there are also many ways these animals can be protected. With enough people interested and willing to help, I hope that one day we will have the cheetah population back and better than
They are also found in Malaysia, however the siamangs found on Sumatra are typically larger than their counterparts (Smithsonian 6). According to a research done by Kurt Gron of the National Primate Research Center, “Although sympatric with other gibbons in some habitats, siamangs occur more often at higher elevations than other gibbons.” It is then noted that siamangs are hardly ever found above 1500 meters (Gron 11). Siamangs are found in several zoos around the world, as well as in primate rescue centers. This to ensure that the species does not become extinct, as the loss and “fragmentation” of their habitats has diminished the population. Deforestation has impacted their natural habitat, and consequently, their population. Siamangs are also constantly threatened by illegal pet trade, where they are a popular “exotic” choice. In fact, siamangs are one of the most frequently traded primates in the world. Due to these harmful activities, many zoos and rescue centers even promote breeding programs to raise the population of the siamangs, as they are on the endangered specie’s list (Brewer
Although it may not seem saving or protecting endangered animals is important, it actually and truly is important because animals around the world are being killed for wildlife marketing purposes which is illegal and destroys the species population in that environment. Citizens should take more care of these endangered animals before they become totally extinct and will no longer be seen on the face of the earth. Recently researchers have found that poachers (hunters who hunt animals for their value by trading illegal merchandise) are killing thousands of animals a day, and they are doing so even to this day. These species should be treated with more responsibility and care. They are even being killed by human interactions such as deforestation, oil spills, etc.
