Wellness and Prevention
Following the Adlerian view, I will discuss how people will maintain wellness by including the core construct. Wellness is how a person takes care of himself or herself mentally, physically, and holistically. We should look at each other from a holistic perspective. To understand a person more fully, it is necessary to perceive the self through the lens of interconnected patterns of Self-Efficacy and functioning (Pomery & Clarke, 2015). I feel every part of humans is interconnected into one. I say this because when our not mentally well, it can affect other areas of the person. No one part outweighs the other. If an individual attains fulfillment only in the area of work, then other capacities that constitute the wheel, such as love or friendship, will be lacking. (Pomery & Clarke, 2015). That is congruent with Adler’s view on how humans are holistic beings. Focusing on one part and not looking at things as a whole make things unbalanced. Some problems develop when people neglect to take care of themselves. Adler taught that we must successfully master three universal life tasks: social task, love-marriage task, and occupational task (Corey, 2015). He did not put one over the other. He felt all three are needs are important in order to become successful.
In addition, I will be describing counseling strategies to prevent mental illness. The person as a whole facilitate self-care by eliminating stress, unhealthy habits, and following day to day regimens to promote wellness. The aim is to build a rapport and assess the client. Adler has several techniques such as advice, humor, silence, confrontation, and early recollection analysis (Corey, 2015, p 116). The three life tasks are powerful strategies Adler used to better people holistically. In addition, the four phases of therapy helps clients reach their end goal in counseling. They are engagement, assessments, insight, and reorientation (Corey, 2015, p.108). According to Adler, change can only established when encouragement is involved.
Adler tools are the different types of therapy he provides. Adler has several types of therapy like individual, group, couples, and family. The tools were also what he use to facilitate change is his belief in people, that the client can be who they want to be, giving the client hope of an end goal, offering new possibilities, and encouragement. He felt the need to reshape individuals and that everyone had a life goal. He was famous for the creative-self, which is the heart of Adlerian theory. In addition, resilience for professionals is to know how to cope and come out of a stressful situation without any kind of remorse. Furthermore, prevention is to prevent disastrous of one’s life. For example, an individual needs to re-evaluate his or her life on a daily basis. According to Venart & Pitcher 2007 [Myers & Sweeney (2005] states, Wellness is an aftermath and a system, a primary aspiration for existing, and a way of life.
These types of therapies are two of the few known to focus on personality and encourage free expression. Client direct what is talked about during therapy and benefits from therapy increase over time. Certain themes that may arise within the therapeutic relationship may reveal useful information (Sacks, 2007).
The healing process includes teaching, enlightening and encouraging the student, in order to help the student resolve some basic mistakes in their individual reasoning. A counselor using Adlerian therapy will assists students in understanding their thoughts, drives, and emotions that influence their way of life or thinking. Alder is the founder of the Individual Psychology Therapy. This theory is developed from Freud’s psychodynamic theory and is considered one of the three major contributors to psychodynamic therapies. The second dimension of wellness is emotional wellness, which has a lot to do with you ability to recognize your own thoughts and feelings and deal with them in a healthy way. There are a lot of ways to do this, such as: understanding and sharing your thoughts and feelings with yourself and those around you, and being confident in your self and the decisions you make. Some well known people who I believe have attained emotional wellness include Ellen DeGeneres and Doctor Phil.
Analytic therapies are often at odds over which type is the most objective. Freud’s psychoanalysis, as basic as it is, leaves room for unrelated and unimportant information to cloud a client’s judgment and conclusions. Jungian therapy provides a guideline that trains the client, and is both logical and open to change. As Davies comes to a closing of The Manticore, he writes about Davey having both clarity and happiness- both of which he had been missing in the beginning of his therapy with Dr. von Haller. “…and I was free to go down if I pleased. Within Gestalt therapy, “the initial goal is for clients to expand their awareness of what they are experiencing in the present moment. Through this awareness, change automatically occurs” (Corey, 2013). This philosophical foundation aligns with my beliefs that people possess the ability to make their own changes when they are fully aware of their circumstances. Additionally, my concept that people, who accept outside sources without sifting through beliefs and standards that may be applicable in their lives parallels with Gestalt’s contact of introjection. People within this stage, willingly assimilate what the environment is feeding them, without dissecting what they need or want (Corey, 2013). Nonetheless, Gestalt’s unfinished business correlates with my opinion that unresolved issues can linger and clutter the present moment, resulting in maladaptive behavior and thinking. When emotions are not fully experienced, “they linger in the background and are carried into present life in ways that interfere with effective contact with oneself and others” (Corey, 2013). Within a counseling context, my beliefs that there should be a partnership between the client and therapist is one of the main goals in Gestalt’s therapeutic process (Corey, 2013). Freud, Jung, and Adler each contributed essential concepts in accordance to one’s personality and environment. Focusing on one’s personality, each theorist assisted in the understanding of personality and each theory is still being used today throughout many therapy sessions. Throughout one’s education, one will go through personal development, seeking to find who he/she is and along the way react to life’s events accordingly. Academic success and developmental are hand in hand, allowing persons to set goals and develop plans to reach each goal. Each theory provides a different aspect in one’s personality which leads to the behaviors of that individual. According to Richard E. If one wants to live an enjoyable, fulfilling life they must know what it truly means to be well. Living a wellness lifestyle means incorporating all aspects of what it takes to flourish as a human being. It goes beyond the health of the physical body and incorporates the important social, emotional, and spiritual factors that play a part in every person’s life in one way or another. Knowing how to act correctly, control our feelings, channel our frustrations, and improve in each dimension of wellness will lead to a satisfactory life. Spiritual, physical, emotional, nutritional, and social wellness define the biggest components of life and thriving in them is vital.
