Introduction
Sustainability in corporate has been much talked about and more so in case of branding. But while a lot of focus is maintained on the sustainable practices, a lot more can be done when it comes to Fashion.
Fashion discussed upon here is the current trends in the textile industry. Sustainability is still a topic which seems to be the responsibility of someone else. A corporate or a society and as consumers we still seem to distance ourselves from the same. Through this article, I am trying to look at sustainability as a designers’ responsibility and the current trends and the customer mindset that prompts a designer to do so.

The result is the growth of Fast Fashion. Fast Fashion is “ low-cost clothing collections based on current, high-cost luxury fashion trends—is, by its very nature, a fast-response system that encourages disposability (Fletcher 2008) “. Fast fashion is also called “McFashion” as it gives rise to instant gratification.
The few other studies reveal that the clothing purchase decision is actually a complex set of values like self-expression, price and comfort/usability. Some of these studies do suggest that a subset of the consumers do value ethical or sustainable clothing though they seems to form a secondary value. Hence the ethical concern should only be a value add and not the main focus. The focus should be on design. This is where designers come into

A 2012 survey of 4000 executives showed that 70% of the firms have sustainability on their agenda and 41% cited the common reason as customer preferences.
Apparel Industry
The global apparel industry has been a major contributor to the pollution hazards. Starting from the sourcing of the material to the dyes used to the process of creating these labels, it’s been affecting the pollution levels as well as the exploitation of the society. Globalization has only contributed much to it. Companies now source different ingredients from different places adding to the transportation issues. This is an issue tackled by the supply chain management. We now have terms like the green supply chain.
A look at the fashion industry and the influence the consumer mindset yields over it is apparent. In the past 10 years a close look at this industry reveals an emerging trend in the consumer mindset. It’s been termed as the ethical clothing consumption. We see the industry taking note of it as well.
1. Sustainable Fashion Bodies and Industry Initiatives- Structural
The strengths of the book come from its’ accessibility. The book is easy to follow and provides readers with a great deal of information about the production of mass-manufactured clothing. As well as brings awareness to its’ many issues which we inadvertently take part in when we purchase such products. The book is well written and thoroughly researched but does have its’ share of weaknesses.
In recent years, there is a kind of fashion emerges and grows rapidly which is fast fashion. It can be traced back to the late 1980s and early 1990s. The retailers started to providing variable and fashionable clothing to their customers, thus it had added mid-season purchasing to their previous two-season calendars. (Tokatli, Wrigley and Kızılgün 2008) However, fast fashion cannot be viewed as a global phenomenon only, it also represents a few sociological perspectives for people to research and study.
The environmental impact of making textiles and clothing is damaging to natural resources and is unsustainable. Buying a cotton shirt seems like a good choice to most consumers because its material is produced from a plant. What people don’t know is that cotton is the world’s dirtiest crop due to the heavy use of insecticides and pesticides. “Cotton covers 2.5% of the world's cultivated land yet uses 16% of the world's insecticides, more than any other single major crop” (Organic Trade Association, 2011). In addition to the ground pollution from crop production, coal burning factories and textile mills leach chemicals into the air and water. As Leonard (2007) discusses, the factories being built overseas not only pollute their water, land, and air but pollution also ends up coming back in water and wind currents. Water is contaminated with countless toxic chemicals and used in excess to grow and produce textiles for clothing production. A great example of this abundant waste is that one t-shirt requires 2,700 litres of water to produce. Fast fashion is damaging the environment on a global scale and that is just the beginning of this flawed system.
Fashion in the 21st century is a big business, as its production employs millions of people and generates billions of dollars in revenue. Fashion has for the past century been, and is still today, used as an indicator of social change and progress, as it changes with the social norms of the society and the political changes of the world (Finkelstein 3). Technology and sustainability in fashion have contrasting ideals and shares a symbiotic relationship. Technology is the base that enables sustainability in fashion to thrive and grow in today’s world as they go hand in hand. The role played by technology in this sustainable fashion realm starts from the physical manifestation of sustainable fashion garments which includes textiles along with the digital domain.
Fashion is everything to society and the media. The fashion industry has transformed into a necessity in the life of people. Everyone wants to look good, feel fabulous and feel as if we belong with everyone else. The envy and desire to wear certain things and look a certain way all come, from wearing the latest fashion handbags, accessories, dresses, shoes, and the list goes on. But, when is considering fashion into an individual’s life going too far to the extreme? The fashion industry as a whole, has been notorious from green issues caused by their lack of sensitivity to the environment, conspicuous and unnecessary consumption of materials, encouraging an “throw-away” society and image issues that support women and young adults to look a certain way to feel “beautiful.” This is an issue that has increased over the past decades. Not just women, but men also feel the uncontrollable need to do whatever it takes to look like the celebrities they see on television and on the runways. The thought that the materials to make those desired items may have caused the life of animals or the destruction of mother nature does not come into mind. Countless people are concerned about conserving planet Earth and keeping it healthy. The fashion world has been targeted for many corruptions.
In ninety minutes, Andrew Morgan’s documentary, The True Cost, shows the story of the clothes we wear today, the people who make these clothes, and the impact it’s having on the world. The link between the people making the clothes and the consumers who are buying it, is investigated to show the truth behind the fashion industry’s low-costs. The goal of this film is to get people to change the way they think about the things they wear.
In conclusion, although fast fashion has become a rising trend because of consumer awareness the drawbacks of fast fashion is also on the rise because of augmented realization around climate change, resource deficiency, financial circumstances, the slow-fashion crusade, and ill-fated accidents like the Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh that happened in October of 2013, as well as hard-hitting, visually awkward movements from organizations such as Greenpeace. I hope to use this article in essay to support the policy section of my claim. Finding solutions to fast fashion is one of the harder topics to write about, and this article gives good insight to how I can shape the policy portion of my claim. I will bring up the idea of organic cotton, and other sustainable fiber plants, as a way consumers can shop more ethically. Comparing the four books was not an easy task. The novels are so different from each other and how they tell their story. One theme that I believe I can compare is how social classes and race separates and divides society. As I compared the novels; Cry, The Beloved Country, The God of Small Things, That Deadman Dance, and 100 Years of Solitude. I found that each novel uses class to tell its story.
