This is one of the most important questions women face in the criminal justice system, especially female patrol police officers. Male are regarded as strong, dominant, and can stand their ground, while females are considered weak, fragile, and their main problem is the physical disadvantage they faced when attacked by someone superior to them. Also do male police officers trust female officers when it comes to their safety. Research done at the LAPD suggests the male police officers do not trust women when it comes to law enforcement. “ I would never trust my life or safety to a female patrol officer- let alone my partner who is a woman.” The stereotypes female police officers face are usually from their male co-workers who think that the job is a man’s job and requires masculinity. In this case, male police officers feel threatened and demeaned because of the fact that a woman can do the same job as them. Other obstacles female police officers face is that because law enforcement is a male dominant job, many thing that female police officers should not seek employment because they are emotional, physically weak, not aggressive enough, naïve, and they do not have the ability to gain respect from society, especially from the male audience. Technically defined self-objectification is when we choose to evaluate ourselves based on appearance because that is how we believe others adjudicate us. The American Psychological Association has found in recent years that self-objectification has become a national epidemic and an international problem. The more women and girls self-objectify, the more likely they are to be depressed, to have eating disorders. They have lower confidence, lower ambition, and lower cognitive function. When the criminal justice system was established, the main objective was to create neutrality and fairness between the sexes. Even though people might believe that there is no such thing as ‘stereotyping’ in the criminal justice system, it is quite obvious that women are constantly being look down upon because of their sex. In general, women tend to be treated like fragile objects that could break at any moment; the truth is that women can be strong and courageous just like men. Society stereotypes women and the criminal justice system is no different.
In the American culture today, women are becoming more sexualized at a younger age due to the influences of the corporate media. Corporate media and society form the perfect idealistic body that women should have and is constantly being promoted making younger girls start to compare themselves to them at a young age. Certain shows and movies, such as Disney, influence young children and teenagers through their characters as to how a woman is supposed to be accepted. The way the corporate media and society make this body image they want women to have starts in a very early stage in a woman's life without them knowing. There are these childhood movies, such as Disney, Barbie and Ken dolls, programs such as Netflix, teen magazines, and the most common source of them all, the internet.
The criminal justice system is a male dominated occupation. For many years women have tried to break down the barrier and some have succeeded. But unlike men, women have to fight to be respected and to be heard. There has always been a gender bias. Women have decided to work outside the home and “move in” on careers that were specified as male professions. Females unfortunately have to deal with the sexist remarks, jokes, sexual harassment, and any other negativity that comes with being a woman in a man’s workforce. Sexual objectification refers to the way in which a person sexually reduces another by treating them as a mere sex object (Halwani). When we look at naked pictures of people and become intrigued by their sexual aspects. Engaging in pornography, as the material already objectifies it’s actors as models (Halwani). Perving on a person’s bodily features such a “her booty” as he or she walks by. Catcalling, by reducing the person solely to their physical appearances and lastly, fantasising about someone, as it objectifies them solely on their physical appearances and can in turn symbolise men or women holistically (Halwani, 2010, pp 186). Allowing for a broader discussion in relation to when sexual objectification is morally permissible (if ever), idea’s constructed by Immanuel Kant, Martha Nussbaum and David Soble are broadly evaluated in order to construct when sexual objectification is permissible.
The sexualization of women in the 21st century has led many to wonder whether or not the feminist movement actually resulted in more harm than good. Although the progress and reform that came out of the feminist movement is indisputable, things such as equal rights under the law, equal status and equal pay, the reality is that the subjugation of female roles in society still exist, and the most surprising part about this is that now women are just as much as at fault for this as men are. Ariel Levy defines female chauvinist pigs as “women who make sex objects of other women and of ourselves” (Levy 11). This raunch culture is mistakenly assumed to be empowering and even liberating to women when it is in fact degrading and corrupting to the modern feminist movement and makes it more difficult for women to be taken seriously in society. The shift in the nature of the feminist movement is in Levy’s opinion attributed to by the massive industry now profiting off of the sexualization of women, the reverse mindset now adopted by post-feminists and women in power roles in our society, and ultimately the women who further their own objectification as sex objects and thus, so by association, deem themselves lesser than man.
Objectification theory has been proposed as a standard for understanding the effects of living in a culture that sexually objectifies women (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997). Objectification occurs when a person’s body is treated like a separate entity and is evaluated on its own merit, without consideration for the rest of the person. When an individual is sexually objectified, they are treated like an object that exists only for the pleasure of others and objectification theory asserts that women are uniquely subject to these types of experiences, especially in Western culture. Self-objectification (SO) leads the individual to create a third person perspective in their minds that they use to compare their physical selves to and in turn causes them to see themselves as an object instead of a whole person. SO also creates a form of self-consciousness, causing a habitual and vigilant self-monitoring of outward appearance.

Sexualization of women, and men, is unfortunately incredibly common in westernized culture and is constantly being one up’d by the images being portrayed, constantly reinforcing the stereotypes of gender. We turn on the computer, ride the bus, watch tv, walk down the street-- We are bombarded with images of women in sexually suggestive poses, revealing clothing, or involved in some sort of sexual act.
