oday, reading is considered to be one the most important elements throughout our lives. Not only does it enhance our creativity, but it also influences the way we think, and feel. It allows us to discover a variety of perspectives. Throughout our lives, we have been exposed towards books as we are in the process of learning our basic fundamental skills such as reading and writing. With the advances of science and technology, there are many book innovations which suggest that they will benefit us in the long run. Traditionally, students began with using paper books, most commonly known as “print books.” In the past, students used these types of books throughout their school curriculum, creating for themselves a sense of pleasure in developing their personal hobbies. Now, they also have the option of accessing more personalized, virtual books also referred to as “e-books.” These books can be viewed on a computer or via applications on tablets. Though printed books require additional costs such as printing, publishing, branding and merchandising, many students prefer them because no prior experience of technology is required. A major drawback with the e-books is that they use batteries in order to function. Generally speaking, with the option of print books, students do not need to access an e-reading device. In terms of tangibility, they are able to put marks and take down mental notes as an effective method of understanding. Students can even reread various paragraphs and interpret them from different perspectives, even after years. Books today are everywhere. We find them in many households, libraries and schools all around the globe. We find many different types of books; from stories to educational textbooks, we regard them today as sources of knowledge and amusement. But it wasn’t the case before 1455. That year, one of the greatest inventions in human history was revealed to the world; Gutenberg’s printing press. This press allowed printing in massive quantity, spreading books all around Europe and the rest of the world at a fast rate. The printing press had many positive consequences on society. At first, it standardized grammar and spelling, and then introduced the mass production of books. It finally inspired future printing technologies around the world.
In addition, textbooks are heavy to carry around and it takes longer to find a page. Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. Journalist Ellen Lee interview a student from Liberty University, and he states that he prefers digital textbooks because he can tap his iPad, opens the digital copy and quickly open the page. ”Books will soon be obsolete in the schools...Scholars will soon be instructed through the eye. It is possible to touch every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture” (Thomas Edison). An idea that was destined for failure has now been made into the key source to get students and teachers more interacted while in a classroom setting. Tablets such as the iPad and the Microsoft surface have made this idea possible, showing students that there is another alternative to the traditional method which would be a printed version of the textbook. Tablets are portable computers that use a touchscreen as its primary input device, meaning that both keyboard and mouse are both physically located on the screen. Early Tablets were built to be used with a pen, today however tablets can be used with just one finger or multiple fingers with the support of multi touch input. Tablet have had a positive input on society especially students in school that are looking to get their work done in an engaging way and, not by moving a pen or pencil like it’s been done for decades. Tablets have proven to be the better tool for learning among students.
The use of technology has introduced a new way of speaking and communication, which will, in time, alter the way literature is displayed on electronic mediums. If you had the choice between your phone and a book,you would probably without thinking grab your phone. But what if you knew that reading is crucial to a future. In “Reading for pleasure Is in Painful Decline” by Stephen L. Carter and “Twilight of the books” by Caleb Crain, both authors argue about the state of reading in The United States. Within both passages they give valid points as to why and how the state of reading are negatively affecting the country. Stephen L. Carter represents how the decline in reading for fun is the main concern, while on the other hand, Caleb Crain shows it’s technology and social media that actually are the main contributors.
Writer, Anna Quindlen, in her argumentative essay, “Reading Has a Strong Future.” Informs how the introduction of E-Readers is changing the perspective many have towards physical books. Quindlen’s purpose is to convey the idea written books are a thing of the past, is inaccurate and that while they will continue to thrive, E-readers are reaching people in far more communicative ways. Quindlen effectively creates not only an emotional response within her audience by building an argument, drawing statistics to increase her credibility, and involving the audience which consists of American readers.
In our modern day society, the value of books is often overlooked due to the recent advances in technology; because of the convenience technology has to offer, people are choosing to watch movies and TV shows, rather than reading books. However, books contain a wealth of knowledge most people have yet to discover--when someone chooses to read a book, they are exposed to a variety of important themes, helping them empathize with others of different backgrounds. Additionally, not reading desensitizes the audience's own imagination. Simply reading words on a page forces the reader to visualize the setting and action they’re reading about. At a young age millions of children all over the world learned how to read. From the first day they learned to decipher the lines and scribblings on a page they were challenged to look at the world through the eyes of someone else. Whether that someone else was real or fictional mattered not; they were putting themselves deep into a foreign perspective and learning along the way. What they learned may have depended on the maturity level of the child, but more often than not they learned the lessons taught by the characters’ actions and words. Books are a part of our history, symbols of revolution and change, expressions of basic rights, and new ideas.
They have plenty of other leisure activities to choose from. They can, of course, read a screen, but we read in different ways when reading different formats. The language of emails, for example, is not the same as the language we would use in a letter. The impact of digital literature is that it can play an important role in building core literacy skills, but there is an ongoing debate about whether it conveys the same benefits as reading a psychical book.
This method accommodates the differences in student's reading abilities while focusing on the meaning, interest, and pleasure of reading. "An important part of classroom life should be reading, reading literature that makes children wonder, weep, laugh, shiver, and gasp." (Vacca, 2006) When students are thoroughly enjoying the material that they are reading they can fully immerse themselves into reading. The students, when using this method, choose their own books which personalizes reading and ensures that they are reading high interest materials.
While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
Paper has officially been replaced with iPads. Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system. Textbooks are reliable, they can be used by anyone, and there are enough textbooks for each student to have their own, and be able to take them home. Also, technology is impacting the way the brain receives information. Reading digital print isn't as productive for readers as printed text, and there is limited access to resources needed for tablets to be effective when used by students. While this is true there are benefits to using tablets and other forms of technology in the classroom. It is easier for teachers to have assignments emailed directly to them, or post assignments on the internet, the use of technology is required in many core classes, and textbooks are easily worn, and expensive.
However, iIn spite of the current pre-eminence of e-books, it may be argued that they are not likely to replace print books anytime soon or possibly at all. Both formats have their advantages and drawbacks, which makes for one of them difficult to replace the other. Moreover, they serve differents needs and purposes. E-books are famous for their portability. Hundreds of e-books can be stored on a single device. Thus e-books don’t take shelving space and are convenient to take on travel, while even a few paper books are bulky and quite heavy to carry around. Numerous e-books are in open access, while paper books are not routinely available free of charge. E-books may be acquired and accessed immediately online, a feature I enjoy especially and treasure most: many a time I was able to buy and read an e-book at home within minutes of learning of its existence. Needless to say, e-books are considerably easier to cite and quote than print books, since the copy-paste feature spares us the trouble of retyping the quoted text. As more people began to access the Internet through smart phones and tablets rather than laptops and computers, it is not a surprise that they would also want to transform the American education system by bringing tablets into classrooms. In fact, a few schools around the country have already replaced textbooks with tablets and have seen improvements in students’ standardized test scores. Using tablets instead of textbooks is not only convenient and helpful, but it can also reduce the amount of paper wastes in school. However, it is not a good idea to completely transform textbooks with tablets with the current technology, for it can not only be damaging to the environment and costly to set up, but also might not be effective in improving K-12 education in the long run.
