When growing up with uniforms, it can be difficult to show one’s personality and individuality. Depending on how strict the dress code is, it can control anything from just requiring the student’s shirt to be a certain color to controlling everything right down to the height and color of the socks students wear. Uniforms do have many pros to them, though, such as saving time in the morning, creating a less distracting atmosphere for students to learn in, and limiting the number of students that feel like an outcast due to clothes. However, many people feel uniforms can come with multiple cons, such as taking away a student’s individuality and limiting their creativity. However, the purpose of the school uniform and appearance restrictions is to eliminate the element of students having to pay attention to how they look, but strict restrictions sometimes make them focus even more on their looks, as they try to express individuality and look good within the restraints set upon them (Craik 32). In Gail Manchini’s article, even though she does not agree with uniforms, she still acknowledges the part of her research that shows that uniforms have a positive affect on a child’s ability to learn. She found that this is partly do to the fact that uniforms help create a less distracting learning area. There is evidence that school uniforms not only control violence but also promote ideas and achievement as students focus more on academic pursuits (Manchini 61). Uniforms also help students get more sleep at night by already determining what they are going to wear each day.
