1. INTRODUCTION Critique is an adjustment of an archaic word that referred by and large to feedback. Critique itself dates to the mid eighteenth century and initially referred to a bit of composing that condemned an abstract or aesthetic work. Critique is a to some research formal word that commonly referred to a research in which somebody gives an assessment about something. The survey can refer to an article breaking down a scholarly or creative work, however, can likewise now and then suggest a more easygoing or individual conclusion (Merriam-Webster, Incorporated, 2017) Critique is a formal research and assessment of a content, creation, or execution - either one's own (a self-evaluate) or somebody else's. Firstly , Tannen introduces the term “culture of critique” by beginning three successive paragraphs with the term so that the reader will not forget it. Tannen then identifies the problem presented by the “culture of critique”, that is, a tendency to attack the person making an argument, or misrepresenting the issue, rather than arguing against their position itself. She points out that instead of listening to reason, people who are caught up in the culture of critique debate as i...
To what extent do you consider that you have already started to develop the approaches of a critical practitioner? Analyse and evaluate your progress using examples from your work to illustrate your arguments.
Working in long-term care can be overwhelming. Imagine you are a new graduate nurse putting your new found knowledge and skills to practice for the first time. Your orientation lasted three days which is standard for nurse home orientation compared to hospital orientation that last approximately six to eight weeks for new grads. The shift has just begun and already you have a new admit, new found pressure ulcer to assess, a possible medication reaction, several new orders to take off and eight patients to document on for varying reasons. Feelings of frustration and confusion take over as you are the only nurse on the unit along with a Certified Medication Technician (CMT) and three Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) taking care of 47 patients. Ideal nurse-to-patient ratio continues to be a national issue in both the hospital and long-term care setting (LTC). In the LTC setting there is no official nurse-to-patient ratio; there is a suggested staff-to-patient ratio. This issue not only affects the new licensed nurses but the seasoned nurse as well. Recently, there has been controversial debates as to whether heavy workloads are detrimental to patients. The federal, state, and local government regulates many aspects of healthcare. However, it is the physicians, nurses and other healthcare professional that provide care directly to patients. Consequently, does insufficient staffing, heavy workloads, and unsupportive work environment directly contribute to poor patient satisfaction, nurse burnout, high turnover and job dissatisfaction?
Newly graduated nurses lack clinical skills necessary to evolve professionally and carefully from academics to bedside practice (Kim, Lee, Eudey, Lounsbury & Wede, 2015). How scary is that not only for the patient but also for the new nurse himself or herself? While being faced with new challenges, an increasing amount of newly graduated RNs felt overcome and unqualified. Twibell and Pierre explain how new nurses express “disillusionment” about practice, scheduling, and being rewarded. Frustration and anger between employees play a huge part in NGNs resigning because of the lack of experience and knowledge of what to do in high stress situations (2012). Nursing residency programs have proven to directly improve patient care, develop critical
...the data did not involve member checking thus reducing its robustness and enable to exclude researcher’s bias. Although a constant comparative method was evident in the discussion which improved the plausibility of the final findings. Themes identified were well corroborated but not declared was anytime a point of theoretical saturation Thus, the published report was found to be particularly strong in the area of believability and dependability; less strong in the area of transferability; and is weak in the area of credibility and confirmability, although, editorial limitations can be a barrier in providing a detailed account (Craig & Smyth, 2007; Ryan, Coughlan, & Cronin, 2007).
One of the most serious issues in nursing, that can affect a nurses career is nursing burn- out. According to the article “Where have all the nurses gone”, current nurses that are practicing, report high rates of job dissatisfaction (which is part of burn out) and 1 of 5 nurses may quit nursing in the next 5 years (Dworkin, 2002). Burnout is associated with nurses not coming in to work, not feeling satisfied when doing their job, high turnover rates and a lack of commitment to the work (Katisfaraki, 2013). If a nurse becomes burned- out, they may not take care of their patients as well and could make mistakes with medication administration. A study performed in the United States by Dr. Jeannie Cimiottti, shows that hospitals with high burn-out rates among nurses have higher levels UTI’s, and surgical infections (World, 2012). Nursing burnout not only affects the nurse, but it also affects the patient, the nurses’ colleagues, and the nurses’ family; nursing burn out often leads to emotional exhaustion and depression, that can effect relations and communication between the nurse effected and the person they are communicating with. This paper will cover what burn-out is, who is susceptible to burn out, and treatment and prevent nursing burn out.
Aristotle said that art was one step away from life, and criticism was one step away from that. So what does that make a criticism of a criticism? Carry the one, divide by a and move the decimal point…I don't know, I was never that good at math, but it seems like we may need to drop bread crumbs like Hansel and Gretel to find our way back to the original text.
Critical analysis involves assessing the differences, beliefs, benefits and disadvantages of a situation. (Polit and Hungler 1999). Bulman (Bulman 2008) express that it is an important skill in professional practice and academic work. Engaging in critical analysis is a positive and constructive process as it identifies any strengths and weaknesses. (Girot 2001)
...epress critical feedback because of social norms set forth in our culture. Fay, Jordan, and Ehrlinger (2012) state, “After a friend’s imperfect piano recital, we might keep our critiques to ourselves and, instead, imply that we enjoyed the performance immensely”(p.206). A little bit of criticism does a lot more good than a lot of empty praise. The Dunning-Kruger effect will continue to plague our society as long as we keep following social norms that encourage misleading feedback.
Criticism is something that we all deal with daily and many of us believe that when we give criticism we are expertly doing so but as we receive criticism we tend to believe the other person is degrading us personally. Since criticism is mainly to judge merits and faults of a person or their actions, it is natural for us to feel defensive as we act the way we do based on the knowledge we have and we feel that the criticism questions our knowledge. Many of us may see criticism as such and act defensively towards it but according to an article called Giving and Receiving Criticism the author Sue Hadfield states, “Constructive criticism, however, can be helpful and lead to better working relations.” (Hadfield, 2013) With this in mind we can process that criticism can be used to give feedback to better ones position or knowledge in that which is being criticized. But how do we give criticism while staying in the favor of the criticized and when receiving criticism how do we differentiate between constructive and destructive criticism? Continuing in the article the author presents certain...
What is Assessment? Assessment is the final stage in the SARA model. Here the Effectiveness of the Response stage is evaluated, determining whether the issues have been reduced or eliminated. An evaluation process and impact process should be used to determine if the problem has decreased. If, however, the problem has not been affected, the assessment phase may indicate that something else might need to be done (Miller, Hess & Orthmann,
Texts on critical theory present an interesting challenge when one sits down to critique or review them. The purpose of these texts is to persuade the reader that all texts should be read and critiqued in the manner described within its pages. The process of evaluating such a book based on criteria that the reader has already established is made much more difficult by the fact that the focus of the book is to explain, in the majority of the cases, why the criteria being used is inferior to what the book itself recommends. How then, does one approach the problem that surrounds critiquing an instructional text on how to critique?
The term reader-response criticism means not only a theory but also a range of approaches in which the focus of critical attention is how a reader responses to a text. Its development was a reaction in which there is an emphasis on the text and the reader gives an ultimate source of meaning.
Reader Response Criticism is focused more on the audience and their personal connection with the play, poem, story or movie. It focuses more on what the author is trying to say to his/her audience to feel connect to what they are reading. Within the play “Proof” there is a lot of 101 family connections that I relate to and I’m sure anyone who reads this would relate to it as well. Varying from the eyes of a parent to a lover and a teen/student.
Whether it’s constructive or destructive, is criticism easy for anyone? There’s no easy way to answer this, as there are many scenarios one can experience criticism for something. In other words, it depends on what they are being critiqued on. Overall, people would like to be under the assumption that they can do no wrong. Although I’m not extremely fond of being critiqued, it benefits me. If it wasn’t for criticism, I would have never passed my driver’s test. When I am being assessed, internally, I process what is being said and I start coming up with ideas to fix my flaws. I take criticism well due to the fact that I am always eager to improve myself, so I can reach my full potential.
