While I’m aware that, unless I move back to Italy, I will be working a job in the American culture. I believe that my experience in Italy will help me be more relaxed in the job hunting process and know what I want in a potential employer. I don’t want to go through the entirety of my career as a stressed out robot, I learned that I prefer a more laid back environment where I can have a creative opinion. Although I may have to work my way up to having a say in the creative works of my future company, at least I know where I want to end up. Italy also taught me not to put too much on my plate, unless it’s my dinner plate. This showed me that I would prefer directing or another aspect of media production other than being a camera person. Although I didn’t enjoy the fast-paced responsibilities of filming, I did find a passion for photography and finding perspectives that others may not notice. Both my internship and my travels around Europe on the weekends contributed to me discovering this passion. I travelled to Barcelona, Paris, Krakow, Prague, Dublin, Galway, and many different cities in Italy, and in each of these cities I found myself trying to capture as much as possible and snapping photos that I loved. I think my background as a film major helped me in capturing the perspective and essence of each place I visited. In film class we learned a lot about studying each shot of the film and the way it is framed. The mise-en-scene was an important aspect of discovering more about the film you watched. Mise-en-scene is everything that you see in a shot of a film, from the objects to the angle. What you see in a shot can have a lot to do with the emotion that viewers will feel from it. When I first found out that I had been approved to intern abroad in Italy, I was very excited and couldn’t wait to tell my family and friends. But a few days later it hit me that I would be traveling to a country where I knew no one, all by myself. Not to mention the fact that I was already scared of planes. But after talking it out with my mom I realized that not everyone gets the chance to live in a different country and gain the experience of working abroad. I remembered when I first found out that I was accepted to Salisbury and the fear that I had in moving to a city on my own where I knew no one. I took the chance and moved in with three strangers who I now call my friends, taking the risk paid off big time and I knew that taking a bigger risk in a foreign country had the chance of paying off even more. Throughout my classes in Salisbury I slowly learned that taking chances in my projects and papers seemed to work out better than playing it safe. I also learned to be more independent in both life and in my classes. I found myself feeling more comfortable raising my hand and sharing my opinions, which is something I had rarely felt confident enough to do throughout high school and community college.
