With the relative simplicity of visiting other countries and getting acquainted with new cultures, knowing more than one language has become the requirement of the modern community. Besides, the growing number of mixed marriages where children tend to grow in the environment in which several languages are spoken, more people tend to become proficient in more than one language at the same time. In the modern world, language is perceived as a bridge between different cultures and the most important tool for communication among people from various backgrounds. Therefore, for a modern educated …show more content…
For people who know more than one language, it is easier to establish a new relationship because they can easily talk to different people having no fear of being not understood. Those people tend to be more sociable and tend to show more respect and trust to other participants of the communication process. People who grow multilingual are more cosmopolitan after they grow up. In addition, those people are more willing to discover new aspects of life, to challenge themselves, and to experience other cultures and what they have to offer to them. Multilingual people show the tendency to be aware of the value of other cultures, and they are open to the new development and to various kinds of innovations. The knowledge of a language helps them to develop intercultural sensibility, and they recognize the need to learn other cultures. Moreover, discovering other cultures, people read the literature written in respective language and learn traditions connected to the language, which result in developing “fundamental thinking patterns of the target culture” in addition to the ones of the native culture (Liu). Considering all those aspects of personality development, multilingualism brings numerous benefits to the people in terms of the communication and learning new cultures. With regard to this, establishing connections with people from different cultures results in the expansion of one’s world perception and cultural awareness. They contribute to the advantages that are present in other spheres of

In the United States, it is important for a person to speak English fluently because it is the official language in America and everybody communicates in English. Many people believe that English should be the only language in America and that sometimes people may face prejudice when they speak English with an accent. For some parents, the fear of prejudice makes them decided not to teach their children their native tongue. On the other hand, there are many other reasons why some parents want to teach their children their native tongue. Gabriela Kuntz explains in My Spanish Standoff why she did not allow her children to speak Spanish at home. Kuntz’s explanations are acceptable, but some research studies reveal that most young children can learn two or more languages. Also, many researchers say that children can learn a second language faster than adults.
Doing this allows the individual to be aware of why and how culture affect their lives and the way they interact with others from differing cultures (Quappe & Cantatore, 2003). It is this awareness that enables individuals to develop cultural intelligence, which is the understanding of how individual culture may be construed by others and how to adapt behaviours in order to improve communication. An understanding of both these concepts allows individuals to develop strategies to implement to avoid miscommunication between themselves and people of differing cultures. The development of both cultural self-awareness and cultural intelligence is integral to efficient and acceptable cross-cultural communication (Brislin, Worthley & Macnab,
In today’s society, especially in the United States, most people are monolingual English speakers. As a result, these monolingual speakers are at a significant disadvantage compared to those who speak more than one language fluently. This disadvantage is crucial to realize since it is important to learn how individuals and the nation can be enhanced. Multilingual speakers have an advantage in global affairs that involve countries that speak different languages. Speaking multiple languages makes it easier to communicate with people when involved in foreign affairs. Those who speak multiple languages are also more aware of other cultures in society. Monolingual speakers are not as exposed to other cultures and have difficulty understanding or even recognizing them. Furthermore, being multilingual increases your
In the United States, the Anglo community is oppressing people of color because of their language, culture, and believes. For many years the Anglo has mistreated color races because they are different, causing anger and not understanding how it feels to be biracial. Latinos identities are robbed by not being able to speak Spanish in school. Therefore, the community in America needs to come together to fight against oppression and injustice caused by the difference in language and culture to improve equality for a group of people, who have lived marginalized throughout the years.
From this perspective, for immigrants learning the language of the host country is a tool to develop a net of useful social contacts. Cristina Rodriguez states that in addition to its role in developing social bonds, the language use assists with preserving a multilingual en...
Being part of a multi-cultural world brings people together and allows them to learn new things from one another. Exposure to diversity gives people ways to distinguish themselves from others beliefs. One way people can be influenced by culture is through forming friendships. This is true because friends spend time with each other’s families. Exposed to new things may lead people to adapting new ideas and values. Learning other cultures make it more confrontable to be surrounded by a diverse group. Sometimes people could become accustomed by their friends culture and begin to speak like them. Language is very important because sometimes it sticks with you. In the end, people are always different from one another because they have different cultural background. Whether if their language changes the person is still going to know where they stand in the world. Everyone builds their identities by the way they were raised and what they were tough as they were growing up. Sometimes people assume that they are the same, but our differences are
Socio-cultural factors have an important effect on second language learning. In particular, cultural exposure plays a significant role in the language learning process. Cultural ignorance and prejudice may cause difficulties for language learners and the degree of exposure also determines how fast a second language learner can acquire a new language. In this mini research essay, I will first examine how people from China and Middle Eastern will be stereotyped. Next, I will discuss why people have similar cultural background with the native speakers learn a new language better. Moreover, I will show different learning strategies people used and finally, how these factors affect second language learning will be discussed.
In the United States today there is a controversy over whether the United States benefits from, or is hurt by a multilingual society. One of the essential qualities of the United States is our diversity in culture. This quality alone is the basis of the migration into the US (United States). Although the idea of having a multilingual society follows the denotation of the quintessence of the US, it would be a perplexing deed to go through such a drastic change. Such as things as which language the government would be run in, and official document be written in, and even minute things such as street signs etc…
Being able to speak more than one language is proving to be a valuable skill in modern society. Many children across the world are at least bilingual, leaving many American parents wondering if they too, should learn to speak another language. As an Early Years practitioner, it is vital to engage in reflective practice to enable me to improve and develop the way in which I work with children, colleagues and parents. In my role as a Family Support Worker, I encountered a situation that has helped me reflect, using Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle (1988). During conversation with a Polish mother of a two year old boy (child A) I noticed that the mother is talking to her son in English. When asked why she does not communicate in her mother tongue, she explained that her husband is English and that is how they speak at home. After that she expressed her concerns about her son becoming bilingual as she believes that second language can affect the acquisition of English, leaving her son behind

Therefore, this is able to encourage the ability to communicate and appreciate the depth and diversity of the world. Communication with two different countries, or three, or four, will further bring the world closer together, in hopes of closing the divide between some countries. By learning a second language, it can significantly broaden your native language as it gives you stronger vocabulary skills, improved literacy skills and a better understanding of the grammar and construction of your own native language. Furthermore, this can help you in other educational studies. Though it is possible to travel to another country without acquiring the native language, the experience you will have is greatly diminished as you will not see beyond the surface of their culture. Additionally, knowing the native language makes travelling easier, by being able to order meals in restaurants, ask and understand directions. Additionally, it makes it easier to find accommodation, it’s more enjoyable, informative and more satisfying. You are able to further understand and appreciate international literature, music and films, by being able to understand word plays, innuendoes, cultural references, metaphors and further improve your ability to speak the
It’s hard to deny that multilinguals tend to make more friends than unilingual people do. Multilingual ability allows people to make not only local friends, but also foreign ones. To multilingual speakers,
