When writing poetry, there are many descriptive methods an author may employ to communicate an idea or concept to their audience. One of the more effective methods that authors often use is linking devices, such as metaphors and similes. Throughout “The Elder Sister,” Olds uses linking devices effectively in many ways. An effective image Olds uses is that of “the pressure of Mother’s muscles on her brain,” (5) providing a link to the mother’s expectations for her children. She also uses images of water and fluidity to demonstrate the natural progression of a child into womanhood. Another image is that of the speaker’s elder sister as a metaphorical shield, the one who protected her from the mental strain inflicted by their mother.

Domestic violence has been plaguing our society for years. There are many abusive relationships, and the only question to ask is: why? The main answer is control. The controlling characteristic that males attribute to their masculinity is the cause of these abusive relationships. When males don’t have control, they feel their masculinity is threatened and they need to do something about it.

Winchell, ?At first fighting back does not even seem an option, survival seems the best she can hope for, in this world at least? (86). However, witnessing the relationship between her son-in-law Harpo and his wife Sophia brings Celie to the realization that such abuse is not necessary and instills in her the desire to stand up for herself. This is evident in Celie?s envy of Sophia?s strength towards Harpo; ?I say it because I?m jealous of you. I say it because you do what I can?t? (Purple, 42). Celie longs for the courage she finds in Sophia. Years of abuse has made her feel that she cannot assert her own independence, and that she is powerless against her husband?s controlling ways.
Alice Walker is vital to the ideas of literary traditions because she is a writer who speaks about how she feels. She writes from what she knows, not what she has learned. Walker, in her stories expressed the problems that may have kept a group in people from achieving what they wanted in life, but still managed to show that these people still had joy in their lives. Her works should continue to be incorporated into Literature on the college level in order to maintain for those who do not understand the plot of African Americans the struggle they faced. She is a powerful force in the Literature that can stand with the likes of Shakespeare because she presents her works in a manner to make the reader think about what life and what is really important. All three of these short stories support the main thought in this essay because Walker as a writer, wrote from what she knew; she grew up in a culture where African Americans seemed to be enslaved to their race which in turn, forced them

Before Nettie’s letters, she only based her self worth on how others perceived her, such as “ugly”, “stupid”, and “Say I’m evil an always up to no good” (pg 3). Her relationships and view on her purpose in life is based on her past and the abuse she received, thus she never got a chance to know the good in the world and what is a healthy relationship between man and woman. Nettie writes about Samuel’s and Corrine’s adoptive children which, in reality, are Cecil’s children that were actually taken away from her when she gave birth to them and this gives her hope and a sense of her life is falling into place again. The truth about her biological father is written by Nettie saying “Pa is not our pa!” (pg 176)which influence her confidence to change her future and the way her life is because she has lived a lie. Through Nettie’s struggles, love, and faith in her, she gathers enough strength to curse Mr.______ and leave him for good. This climax is so necessary because her outburst of anger and distrust that has been kept over the years is finally released through the night at supper when she proclaimed she was leaving with Shug to go to Tennessee starts her new view and purpose in life and shows her who she truly
Domestic violence can affect families in more ways than one: the husband-wife relationship, the children, and also the financial stability. “One woman is beaten by her husband or partner every 15 seconds in the United States” (Stewart & Croudep, 1998-2012). Domestic violence can interfere with the husband-wife relationship because one spouse is always in constant fear of the other. This violence could vary from physical abuse to psychological abuse, meaning that the abuser persuades the victim that they deserve the beating.... ...
The father, husband, brother, or male lover (Juneja 24) often controls relationships between loved ones. Celie, threatened by the man she knows as her Pa, Alphonso, raped her repeatedly not only hurting her body but her mind as well (Henderson 70). While he abused Celie, he told her, “You better not never tell nobody but God. It’d kill your mammy. He start to choke me saying you better shutup and git used to it. But I dont never git use to it. And now I feels sick every time I be the one to cook. My mama fuss at me an look at me. She happy, cause he good to her now. But too sick to last long” (Walker 8). The man that raised her as his own impregnates Celie due to the daily abuse. She is, as a result, subjugated to the point where she cannot even admit to what he has done after own ailing mother asks what has happened to her when she acknowledges that Celie is pregnant. She uses God to cover the misuse, which is why she writes her letters to him, ultimately, because she is subconsciously obeying what Alphonso told her to do (Henderson
