In the world today, many people are suffering from diseases because of poor healthcare. With the government desperately trying to find solutions to this problem, they called for the Engineers and computer scientists to help, who are doing their best in solving the problem. The engineers are building machines to monitor the patients either at the hospital or in their homes. Meanwhile the computer scientists are focusing on developing programs that can help anyone check their health not to mention also seeking help if they need it. In addition to these improvements, the general health care must change its method with dealing with the problem so that they can help anyone before they might get themselves in danger. However, without good general …show more content…
Real time monitoring can provide enormous benefits to doctors for example, it can warn doctors if anything happens to the patients and it will keep a record so that we can understand how to tackle these diseases (Wakefield, 2012). According to Menachemi and Collum (2011), real time monitoring can help with increasing hospital’s database. While patients are being monitored, the data about the disease is stored electronically in a database which then can be accessed by doctors to improve their ability to cure the disease if it occurred again. Real time health monitoring can inform anyone nearby how the patient is doing and to see if the patient needs any medical care (Herzog, 2015).although having real time health monitoring is better than nothing. Kakria, Tripathi, and Kitipawang (2015) stated that the time it takes to send the data to the hospital can take more the 6 minutes, which is under acceptable range in American heart association. . While it is a simple equipment that can be attached to a patient, it can track any vital, mental and physical changes that can be fatal to the patient and notifies the doctors so that they can act on the patient as soon as possible (Herzog, 2015). Other method that computer scientist can do to improve health monitoring is by the internet. Herzog (2015) stated that by using the internet patients can …show more content…
Engineers can help with building some devices to help patients to check their health or improve their houses to suit their needs. One of the ways to improve patient’s health is by replacing torn off limbs. According to Grovette (2016), advance in prosthetics can improve the lives of anyone that had his arms or legs damaged or was born without any, it is now possible to replace the damaged limbs with advanced prosthetics that a human can control using the nerve system. However, prosthetics limbs can also be harmful to anyone wearing it. Not only that the prosthetics are expansive, prosthetics can harm the patient more than help the patient if attached incorrectly (Brian, 2010). Another major discovery by engineers is with the possibility to regenerate lost tooth. Grovette (2016) stated that a team at Harvard has successfully regenerated rats and human lost tooth by using low powered lasers to stimulate the stem cells and grow new teeth. In addition, a new type of light bulb is being developed to disinfect and kill bacteria. The new type of light bulbs will be similar in size and shape of a regular light bulb, but it can continuously disinfect the room by preventing the bacteria from repopulating in the room. This light bulb can help hospitals with keeping the hospitals clean and disinfected for the new patients. Another way for engineers to improve health monitoring and general well being
The situation further suggests that such healthcare institution needs excellent information system, medical technology, clear objectives that ensure the delivery of superior healthcare services, and obviously need comprehensive healthcare service.
Working as a professional registered nurse in the hospital, I realized how nurses struggle to find balance between devoting the time charting on the computer and spending time taking care of the patients. Moreover, I’ve seen nurses where they get discouraged trying to find this balance between patients and charting. As a bedside nurse, I would love nothing, but to tend to the needs of my patients. The length of time consume on electronic charting all day, take the very essence of bedside nursing away from nurses, which is caring. Reducing the time of nurses being occupied on charting by eliminating redundant tasks while conforming to their standard, are the changes I would like to make. These are a few of the reasons why I wanted to pursue a degree in informatics. I would advocate for nurses everywhere and to become an instrument in providing them a better electronic health system to work on. Pursuing the degree in nursing informatics will benefit me in
The world of healthcare changes every day. Technology, as we know it evolves and changes the actual care that patients receive and even post care as well. It has been determined that most faults are caused by system failures. When a break in the system has occurred it must then be decided where the,” inefficiencies, ineffective care and preventable errors” to then influence changes within the broken system (Hughes, 2008). Improvements sometimes can begin with measurements and benchmarks which in turn will allow organizations to assess the trouble spots and broken areas within the system. Many times those broken areas within the system will be owned by the humans who operate within these systems. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM)
Heart Failure (HF) is prevalent disorder that affected 6.6 million people in the United Sates during 2010 (Patarroyo-Aponte & Colvin-Adams, 2014). The heart lacks the ability to push oxygenated blood throughout the cardiovascular system. This disorder prevents vital organs from getting the oxygen needed in order to perform their duties as well. The disorder must be managed and maintained since HF is a disorder that not only affects the heart but respiratory system, endocrine system, digestive system and all other system (Chiarugi, Colantonio, Emmanouilidou, Martinelli, Moroni, & Salvetti, 2010). Heart failure is a serious disorder is which expected to increase by 25% by the year 2030. To coincide with the people diagnosed with heart failure, 50% of these people will die within the 5 years of being diagnosed (Patarroyo-Aponte & Colvin-Adams, 2014). With these numbers of diagnoses and mortality puts a strain on the quality of healthcare, cost of healthcare and workflow of healthcare system. However, the earlier the patient can be diagnosed with heart failure will help decrease mortality rates, hospital stays and cost of treatments. One of the ways of early detection for heart failure is by the implementation of a clinical decision support system (CDSS) into a healthcare facility.
According to Sharma, Jain, and Arora (2012), strategic monitoring is a system set to measure progress of the strategies set in place in regular intervals. Strategic monitoring observes and records the progress of the strategies implemented in health care organizations. Moseley (2009) states that strategic monitoring notes down the “gaps between the initial assumptions and new environmental conditions and between the initial goals and current performance” (p.254). It helps to make sure the action plan is going as planned and if not what needs to be changed to make the plan successful.
Biomedical technology is the “physiological monitoring, diagnostic testing, intravenous fluid and medication dispensing and administration, and therapeutic treatments” (Yoder-Wise, 2015). As nurses we use this type of technology multiple times a day. In nurse management, we have to monitor these technologies for errors. Like at the beginning of shift my nurse and I go check the code carts are working and stocked. Information must be “accurate, reliable, and presented in an actionable form”; hence, if the code machine is not working properly it could be the difference between life and death (Yoder-Wise, 2015). Information is also transmitted electronically all the time. It is helpful when the entire health care team can access patient files all at once and from different locations; it also gives us a set language to use when charting because checking a box helps with the language flow and prevent errors. However, sometimes information on the computer can be reputational and hard to see the pertinent information in a sea of other information. A nurses we must always have a working knowledge, which is “cognitive activity and critical thinking” (Yoder-Wise, 2015). We must have evidence based and up to date knowledge to provide the best care to patients. As a nurse manager, my nurse ensures that everyone is up to date on their continuing knowledge classes and are certified in different aspects like CPR. If there is a new process the hospital is using or new evidence about a
Health information technology (HIT) is improving the population of the United States of America’s health outcomes and heath care quality. Health information technology has many benefits, including efficiency, financial savings for patients and hospitals, increased safety for patients, and the potential to improve quality of patient care. According to the RAND research, health information technology can save up to $77 billion per year. As a matter of fact, accurate health information records indicate that health information technology is decreasing people’s death rates. After many follow ups it has reported that the use of electronic medical records has “reduce death by 34%”. They found that benefits of health information technology has been
The use of computer technology plays a vital role in society. The use of it alone has made different task easier, by reducing time management, effort, and overall cost in completing a particular task. With the widely vast growth of computer technology in every field of life; the health care services are experiencing an immerse digital progression by the adoption of electronic health record systems through the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (Hitech Act).
It is characterized as the level of health of a individual, gathering, or country. We can quantify the status from numerous points of view. Approaches to quantify consist of using physiological, physiological, psychosocial measures, mortality, death rates, and handicap rates.
Our clinical knowledge is expanding. The researcher has first proposed the concept of electronic health record (EHR) to gather and analyze every clinical outcome. By late 1990s computer-based patient record (CPR) replaced with the term EHR (Wager et al., 2009). The process of implementing EHR occurs over a number of years. An electronic record of health-related information on individual conforms interoperability standards can create, manage and consult with the authorized health professionals (Wager et al., 2009). This information technology system electronically gather and store patient data, and supply that information as needed to the healthcare professionals, as well as a caregiver can also access, edit or input new information; this system function as a decision support tools to the health professionals. Every healthcare organization is increasingly aware of the importance of adopting EHR to improve the patient satisfaction, safety, and lowering the medical costs.
In the article “Medical Technology and Ethical Issues”. The authors describe that how computerize system uses in emergency rooms. The RIP is a computer program which is helping the doctors make knowledgeable decision about whether to manage life treatments or just patients to die. Program investigate all of the input on specific patient and makes prognosis on the probability
By convention, the field of healthcare research was entirely occupied by physicians and doctors. They were the ones who came up with new methods to treat diseases and get better results from diagnostic tests. Technology, on the other hand, was always looked at as a way to solve problems that we faced that didn’t pertain to the medical sector. It was employed to enhance the quality of life and make day to day work easier. But as technology progressed, so did the areas of application. The structural balancing techniques which were previously used to hold a building steady were now being used to develop near-perfect artificial joints and prosthetic limbs. Transparent polymers, developed to enhance robotic vision, were being suggested as a candidate for an artificial lens for the human eye. Before anyone could even understand what was happening, engineering had taken up the mantle to further medical technology to dizzying new heights.
From state and federal levels, the healthcare industry has come a very long way, experiencing changes along the way. The development of advanced technology that has enhanced the quality of healthcare delivery systems will help all patients to be able to benefit. Doctors are able to access patient records at a faster rate and respond to their patients in a much more timely fashion. E-mail, electronic transfer of records and telemedicine will give all patients and physicians the tools needed to be more efficient, deliver quality care and deliver quality telecommunication at a faster pace than before.
Within the healthcare field, an abundance of patient assessments occur frequently throughout the day. However, one of the primary assessments to take place is the health assessment. This essay will define health assessment and detail its major components. The purpose of a health assessment will also be discussed from a nursing perspective. In addition to this, the essay will evaluate how a health assessment would be conducted in two different settings. The two settings include; the assessment of a child in a general practice setting and the assessment of an elderly person in an aged care setting. First, health assessment must be defined.
In other words, ICT basically promotes professionalism and reduce human effort as well as reducing the chances of erring. Healthcare simply means preventing, diagnosing and curing ailments that terminate life and reduce lifespan of human and all living things. In other words, the prevention, treatment, and management of illness and the preservation of mental and physical well-being through the services offered by the medical and allied health professions. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) play a vital role in improving health care for humanity. It is efficient in providing, communicating and storing certain information about users and uses. ICT helps in bridging the gap created in health sector and may be used to enhance efficient relationships between the healthcare providers and health researchers. In other words, through the development of databases and other applications, ICT enhances health research and; this provides the capacity to improve health system efficiencies and prevent medical errors. The use of ICT can never be evaluated without
