Fantasy football has been on the high rise for the past ten years. It is now a billion dollar industry played by millions each year. In the United States and Canada alone there are 57 million players (Affleck 2015). This trend started back in 1999 when Yahoo started making free fantasy football accounts. According to Dwyer and Kim (2011) the four main reasons as to why people play fantasy are: social interaction, competition, entertainment/escape, and gambling. Nowadays almost everyone is available to the internet making it easily accessible for everyone. Football is the easiest to manage out of all the fantasy leagues. They don’t need an ultimatum such as money or success, they simply just play the sport because they love football. People crave competitiveness and want a reason to win. Even though their is a strong desire for people to win in fantasy, most people would rather have their favorite team win. By the age of fifteen, most of the population has their favorite football team picked out (Drayer, Shapiro, Dwyer, Morse, & White 2010 p. 130). Most of these fans stick with this team for their entire life. People who participate in fantasy are more likely to be diehard fans. These fans love to win in fantasy and real football. Since fantasy football has such a competitive nature, fans are watching games they usually wouldn’t care about because they want to win.
Fantasy league is also a good way to catch up with old friends and make new friends. Players may join a fantasy league because all of their friends are doing it and they want to keep up with all the trends. It is also an easy way for people to have conversation with each other and just have fun. Fantasy football gives people something interesting to talk about each week. You can talk about how your team is doing, “hot” players, and popular football
