From an early age, I've been very passionate about basketball. However, basketball didn't always come as easy to me as it does now. Learning the basics proved to be a struggle at first, but I didn’t want my failures to define who I was as a player. To me, failure is a bitter yet necessary evil. No one ever wants to fail; nonetheless, it happens whether we want it or not. With that in mind, what comes next is the important part. What you choose to do with your failures not only defines you as a player but also as a person. If you allow your failures the chance to get the best of you, that is exactly what they will do. Following that pattern prevents any chance to improve yourself. However, if you use them as a chance to learn or to grow, you'll discover success not just in sports but in life as well. In some way or another, anyone who has found success in one area owes their success to failures in another. My story is a story full of mistakes and success, a classic tale of rising from the ashes. My middle school years were an important phase of my development. Valuable lessons were learned; the most important being that failure is unavoidable. My goal was to one day be the athlete that all the little girls idolized. During my seventh and eighth grade basketball seasons my greatest fear was that I may never be that …show more content…
Consequently, Junior year came with higher expectations than ever before. Our team quote was “start unknown, finish unforgettable,” therefore we tried to play and live by this. As our first game came to bear, I was nervous because I didn’t want to be a weak link. Even with my high hopes and good attitude, too many turnovers were made. My turnovers didn’t result in a team loss, but it did a personal one. At the next days practice, I realized what I needed to improve on, so I continued to try and tie some of my loose
The famous retired basketball player Michael Jordan sees eye to eye with Gladwell vision of success. According to Michael Jordan “ I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career.I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 Times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again that is why I succeed.” by using facts and figures Michael Jordan highlights all his failures and how he grew from them and that to get to success you need work and
Many people believe that a growth mindset helps you be more successful other than a fixed mindset. However, in her book Mindset, Carol Dweck explains, that if you fail at something but you want to do better and you keep practicing and trying and develop that skill you will be successful . in the book Dweck gives an example of Michael jordan and how he got cut off a varsity team .Micheal practice everyday working hard on his shots , eventually got put back on the team and became the biggest basketball player there is . Dweck states, “He constantly worked on his weaknesses- his defensive game and his ball handling and shooting.” He also states ,”Former Bulls assistant coach John Bach called him “a genius who constantly wants to upgrade his
Ever since I was young my parents said “Drew you should try new things, even if it means you fail at something.” I never really listen to them until one time in the study grade when I decided that it was ok to fail. I asked my parents “ Can we look for a club basketball team that I could try out for?” Thrilled in hearing that I wanted to try something new, they found I tryout for a team called the Cincinnati Royals. A couple of other friends agreed to try out with me, but I was still very nervous because it was my first tryout. All three of us made it through the first round of cuts and were called back for another tryout. I remember being more nervous for the second tryout than I was for the first. My palms sweated the whole night, every shot I took clanked of the rim, it wasn’t my night. My two other friends were told that they made the team, but I unfortunately got cut which I expected given how I performed. At first I saw this experience as an overwhelming failure, but I soon realized that I challenged myself, and I could learn from the criticism the coaches gave me. Taking the new stuff I learned from the tryout, I found a different club basketball team that I was fortunate enough to make, which I got to meet new people and play a sport that I loved. Although I may not have gotten the
Starting my freshman year at County High School, I played basketball and loved every minute of it. I wouldn’t be conceited enough to say I was good, but God did bless me with the talent to play. My life revolved around the sport of basketball; some would say I slept, ate, and breathed every part of it. I spent all my time training and practicing to make myself a more dedicated athlete. This dedication not only helped me as a player, but also molded me into the person I am today. It somehow helped to prepare me for what defeat I would face with back surgery in the future.
“If at first you don’t succeed try , try again.” At the age of six I was starting to play football. The game was a hard hitting running and commitment. I was six years old at the time now I’m fourteen a freshman in high school a lot has changed.
Michael Jordan once said “I will not let anything get in the way of me and my competitive enthusiasm to win”. This have help people of all ages get through their burdens and do something they love instead of doing some negative. For many people basketball has become more than a game, it’s the way of life. The American game of basketball has traveled now, it’s played by more than 250 million people worldwide.
I had been practicing harder than the rest of the kids in 7th grade, but yet they were still so much better than I was. I couldn’t understand what I was doing wrong. I kept thinking that I wasn’t going to make the basketball team again. One day I had enough and just started working hard on building confidence in my shot. I would spend hours on end just trying to build confidence because I had no confidence in anything I did.
“The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
The championship game loss helps the audience, especially young adults with high, aspiring dreams, to understand, that even if you do work-hard and aren’t awarded with winning your goal, this isn’t the end of your journey. It only means you have to work harder in the future, if you want to succeed at your goal. This conclusion shows young children how to lose properly and how to be grateful for what they have, since being good a winning is a much easier task. For like a quote from Colin Powell, “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” The under-class, basketball players learned from the mistakes in the title game, so they could go farther and win next year’s championship, because failure should never be your excuse to not attempt something.
Everyone wants to get better at something, but some want it more than others. In “How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium”, the narrator wants to get better at basketball, so he wakes up everyday at 4:30 to go with his dad to his work. Everyday, the narrator would wait 3 hours in his dad’s car until the gym opened, only to sit on the bench and watch the other men play basketball. Finally, one of the best players, Dante, tells the narrator he can play but he’ll get “smoked”. However, the narrator proved him wrong. The narrator learns that if you persevere, work hard, and have confidence, your dreams may come true. In How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place
17 year-old Rashim Lancit was the standard senior at LaSalle High School. His best friends were Andrew and Colin. They played together for their high school basketball team. However, Rashim loved the game of basketball more than his friends and dreamed to go to the NBA. He thought there was no way that he would make it there. However, that all changed one Friday night at the LaSalle basketball game.
Michael Jordan, considered the greatest basketball player in history, once said, “If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” This quote portrays the mindset Jordan had while he was struggling to achieve his dreams. The effectiveness of his mindset proved that we can turn it into a powerful weapon that will help us excel in life. Michael Jordan had a positive mindset. He didn’t give up after failing the first time. He kept trying to get where he wanted. His mindset defined him, much like how our mindsets define us. Whether we are optimistic or pessimistic, it plays a huge role in our journeys. Someone who is pessimistic may never achieve his dreams because he constantly doubts himself. He believes that he will constantly fail. Those who have gained success embrace failure because that is what makes them stronger and smarter the next time they work toward their goal. Our mindset is what defines our success because it is what will make us work hard and put an effort into achieving our dreams, no matter how many failures come first.
Basketball is an indoor and outdoor game. Throughout the years Basketball has been making a reputation for itself in this world but today it is one of the most popular sports played throughout the world. Basketball is widely played throughout colleges, high schools, NBA (National Basketball Association), even for fun. Basketball is now diverse with many different kinds of players and teams. In the past it was mainly a male dominated sport.
“Life is like a basketball, it bounces up and down.” I love basketball. I feel affection for the taste of victory, when you win a game. However, I also find losing a worthwhile experience. I worship the feeling where you score a point. It’s slow motion at first, as you gaze at the shot you’ve made, wondering if it is going to manage. Then the taste of your salty sweat and the sound of your pounding heart are back in action. *Swoosh* the ball rapidly swirls into the hoop and falls through the net. It is so stunning, and so breath-taking. “Beautiful shot! BEAUTIFUL!” the coach would yell. Everyone would give a little cheer, and I would smile and look down. I am proud to make the shot, but not cocky about it. It’s for the team, teamwork… I would think in my head. Afterwards, I would be focusing on how to get my head completely into the game, that’s how addicting it is.
It doesn’t matter if they are failing or success, the only thing matter is how hard people are trying during the process. The value of success will worth and have respect after they walk through failure. It’s important on how people stand up after they failed, not how they failed, because everyone will fail at least one time on their life. A good example of people who fail but they stand up and learn from it is people who play sport. At first time of playing, no one will good at sport. Sometime they make a common mistake when they start play but if they learn from it, they won’t make that same mistake again during the game. To have that success they have to make mistake and fail during the practice so they can learn from it and practice to overcome their failure. But people who never fail when they play, they may make a common mistake on the
