ving access to equal education is a huge problem in Illinois due the lack of educational funds in lower income areas. Causing a lack of resources available to the school to use. Making it harder for the students to get the education they deserve.
In Illinois, local education funding comes from property taxes within the district. Areas with higher property values pay higher property taxes. This means more money is funneled into the schools in the area.
To fix Illinois’ funding issues isn’t about trying to tweak the formulas and making fixes so that political power between different regions in Illinois can be temporarily equalized. To fix Illinois’ education system, financial power needs to be taken from politicians and special interests.
As long as they control the funding system, it won’t be about accountability, it will be about money and who controls it. The only real solution is to drop the current and to transition to a new education funding system – A system that provides parents with more control over the flow and distribution of money. Illinois doesn’t need to start from scratch. Alternatives already exist and have proven effective in other states across the country, including Wisconsin and Indiana. In conclusion the only way to fix the problem is to completely revise the Illinois education to allow equal funding, resources and opportunities for every student. Because all schools will have equal educational funds, the students will be able to have equal access to the education they deserve
The gap between the nation’s best and worst public schools continues to grow. Our country is based on freedom and equality for all, yet in practice and in the spectrum of education this is rarely the case. We do not even have to step further than our own city and its public school system, which many media outlets have labeled “dysfunctional” and “in shambles.” At the same time, Montgomery County, located just northwest of the District in suburban Maryland, stands as one of the top school systems in the country. Within each of these systems, there are schools that excel and there are schools that consistently measure below average. Money alone can not erase this gap. While increased spending may help, the real problem is often rooted in the complex issues of social, cultural, and economic differences. When combined with factors involving the school itself and the institution that supports it, we arrive at what has been widely known as the divide between the suburban and urban schools. Can anything actually be done to reverse this apparent trend of inequality or are the outside factors too powerful to change?
The greatest country in the world still has problems evenly distributing education to its youth. The articles I have read for this unit have a common theme regarding our education system. The authors illustrate to the reader about the struggles in America concerning how we obtain and education. Oppression, politics, racism, and socioeconomic status are a few examples of what is wrong with our country and its means of delivering a fair education to all Americans.
An outdated education system is the largest problem Michigan faces because it affects not only the present, but also the future of the state. Important issues cannot be solved, nor policies created to remedy them, if the people attempting to solve them are not equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to make informed decisions. The state cannot run itself, let alone the nation as a whole, if its’ people are uneducated. The Constitution, the very basis of our government, relies heavily on the assumption that citizens of the United States are able to make knowledgeable and well-reasoned decisions, the types of which cannot be made when a person does not receive a proper education. This proper education is unattainable when low educational funding occurs. Lowering educational funding leads to lower standardized test scores, lack of resources, and an overall poorer education (Roy 2003). Even with these results educational funding has consistently been put upon the chopping block at all levels of government. Governor Rick Snyder’s budget cuts $470 per pupil for the 2012 fiscal year, while promising only small incentives to be added when re-balancing the budget in 2013 (Resmovits 2012). Snyder’s cuts in education stand in sharp contrast to the budget and policy passed in 1994, by then Governor John Engler. Engler, along with the House and Senate, created Proposal A. This policy increased funding to all levels of education, reduced the large funding gap between poorer and richer school districts, and opened schools of choice. The people getting affected are working class people who have paid taxes and paid their pensions for ten, twenty, thirty, forty, even fifty years. These same legislators also want to change the ways schools are funded. They do not care that the children at Illinois are the future, not only of our state, but also for the nation as a whole. The school system of Illinois has been underfunded for so long, therefore holding an eighty million dollar convention would only hurt our school’s funding. The Illinois legislators, including both the house and senate, have never talked about cutting their salaries or forgoing their pensions, yet they want to once again penalize the working middle class of Illinois. These same legislators refuse to create a balanced budget so our state can begin paying off its debt. They would rather raise taxes on their constituents than do the right thing and stop spending money our state does not have. Our current governor, Governor Rauner, raised taxes, promising to pay down the debt and fully fund our schools. He did neither of the things he promised. For centuries African Americans have fought for equal rights, one of them being an opportunity for the chance to get an equal education. Many people believe that African Americans have an equal or better chance at getting an education than other students. This is not the case when in fact, it is actually harder for these three reasons: African American students tend to come from harsh, poverty stricken atmospheres. Shattered family lifestyles that make it difficult to pursue a higher education because they have not received the proper information. Secondly, just because African Americans are minorities does not mean that they receive a vast amount of government assistance or financial aid to pursue a higher education. Having reviewed the facts from both sides, those who are for additional funding for education and those who are against, there is truth to both sides. Additional funding, as long as there is strict accountability, will help all students from various economic backgrounds to have an opportunity to receive the very best education. The challenge at hand is for politicians, educators, and families to determine a fair and balanced approach to implementing measures of accountability. Overall, the poor academic achieving students do need funding just as much as anybody. School funding needs to be increased, but there needs to be accountability as well.
America is often enamored of itself as the champion of equality in every aspect of its society; however, this is often not the case. This is true in every aspect of life, but is very evident specifically in the American education system. Although America claims to give an equal education to all, regardless of any external factors, economic class often plays a role in what type and how good of an education a student may receive. Since education is the basis for future success, this inequity resulting from socioeconomic status implies that this is where inequality in everyday life starts, and that the system generates this inequality. If this is true, then one might ask, what then is the purpose of education? If economic class predetermines the type of education a student will receive, what purpose does it really serve? Jean Anyon, Richard Rodriguez, and Malcolm X all have differing opinions of the purpose of education. My personal experience with the education system contradicts both Rodriguez’s and Malcolm X’s opinion, that through hard work, anyone can receive an excellent education, but supports Anyon’s opinion of the purpose of education, which is that the education a student receives is directly affected by their economic class.
In terms of talking about the accessibility of school funding, equality of opportunity would be where all public schools are distributed the same amount money for their school. Once the money is distributed, it should then be spread evenly amongst areas in dire need of help. Money could be dispersed to help aid in special needs for kids, in support the arts, music, and sports programs, or for technology that may be a useful teaching tactic. Most importantly, this funding would be given to the areas and programs that were struggling, and where students would benefit the most. If a school had an outstanding arts and music program, but their special education department was lacking, money should be given to the education department to help make improvements and provide the teachers and students with the proper resources.
Some states want to have separation when it comes to the income of these schools. States argue that high class, wealthy, school districts should have more money than the lower class districts, because of the tax payers wants or because there are better opportunities for students to grow in the wealthier areas. According to the U.S. Department of Education, more than 50 percent of lower end schools are not receiving the amount of money they should get from the state funds (U.S. Department of Education). This is what is preventing school districts in these areas from helping students with their education. The schools are forced to cut back on programs such as extracurricular activities that are suppose to encourage students to be active, or they would have to cut back on supplies where in some cases there are not enough textbooks for each student to have his or her own. The U.S. Department of Education also stated that teachers that are less paid and have less years teaching are often the ones dealing with the students in poverty. (U.S. Department of Education). This only prolongs the problem with children receiving the proper education. If they are taught by teachers who don’t know what they are teaching or those who don’t have enough experience, then the students are not going to learn the correct information or any information at all. It is agreed that all students ought to receive equal education opportunity. Students face other life factors which include but are not limited to, isolation, limited access to resources and socio-economic status. This means that some students may have to work harder to access their academic opportunities.
Educational problems should be on the government’s agenda, because education is the most costly of all state and local functions. Local governments spend a large portion of their budget on education than state government. The local educators know the specific needs of their students far better than the state. The government decides what qualifications teachers must have, what types of rates and taxes shall be levied for education, and many other decisions that affect the life of every child in America that way every child will be able to get the same education. The government offers grants, loans and scholarships for higher education includes teaching, research and social services activities of universities, and within the realm of teaching. Higher education is therefore very important to national economies.
