Dentistry poses high physical demands for those working in the profession, leading to a greater likelihood for the development of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)1. In a review written by Sarkar et al., it was noted that as many as 87.2% of dentists experience some sort of MSD in their lifetime, which can affect the ability to work, leading to absentees and possible early retirement. An integral part of a successful dental practice, among many other components, is a dentist in good health2. Thus, it is necessary to practice proper ergonomics by making sure that the occupational environment is tailored to success of the dentist rather than forcing the dentist to make accommodations to his or her surroundings1. In a study of 220 dentists, the participants either participated in yoga, other physical activity or no physical activity. After analyzing the results of a self-reporting work-related questionnaire asking about the musculoskeletal pain experienced in the past 12 months, researchers found that musculoskeletal pain was noted in 34.5% of the 220 dentists. The prevalence of pain of those who practiced yoga was 10.5%. Those who engaged in other exercise or no exercise had a prevalence of pain of 21.7% and 45.6%, respectively. There is a very high prevalence of these disorders in both dental hygienists and dentists. It is not centered on dental hygienists alone. Some other musculoskeletal disorders experienced are tendonitis, neuropathy, and tension neck syndrome and trapezius myalgia. MSD pain and neuropathy in hygienists alone ranges from 60% to 96%. These disorders arise from certain issues in positioning as well as heavy workloads and exertion in awkward postures. The most affected muscle tends to be the Trapezius because that’s where most of the work load is centered when working on patients (Morse et al, 2007). When working on the maxillary arch, it is the most difficult to position one in a successful ergonomic position. It causes the hygienist to lean and stretch forward. One of the biggest causative factors for bad positioning involves the misuse of the operator chair. If the operator is sat too high it can cause falls, if it is too low it can cause slouching as well as knee or back pain. Another causative factor in these disorders is not having the patient work with the hygienist. ‘A Collaborative Approach Between Chiropractic and Dentistry to Address Temporomandibular Dysfunction’ by Rubis, Rubis and Winchester found in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine is a case report that discusses the comanagement of a patient with TMD. In this case, a patient presented with typical symptomology of TMD: headaches; jaw, neck and shoulder pain along with clicking in the TMJ. Treatment by the chiropractor included: pelvic adjustments to correct their pelvic unleveling, thoracic and cervical spine adjustments to address the patient’s shoulder and neck pain. The patient also received manual therapy of their left TMJ where the chiropractor gapped the joint then proceeded to adjust the mandible to reposition the disc as well as myofascial release of the lateral pterygoid muscle. Comanagement by the dentist included a repositioning and night time splint for anterior repositioning of the mandible. After being treated three times per week for six weeks, the patient reported they no longer experience pain or clicking of their TMJ as well as no headaches or neck pain.
