Before we talk about whether food culture change or not, we first have to have some idea as to what culture is. “Culture is the behaviors and belief characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group. Epidemiology from Tulane University”( Xu Xiong 2001) pointed out that Chinese and western diet culture differs due to the variation in each country's culture, custom, atmosphere, historical connotation, nutritional values as well as an economic condition factor. The difference in the food cultures is visible through analyzing the diet concept, the cooking method's difference, ingredients and cooking utensils and so forth. Many people assume that the biggest difference between Asian and Western diet culture is, in Asia people use chopsticks …show more content…
“During the 60s more people came to the UK from Hong Kong. Chinese food first arrived in the UK in the early 19th Century, when Chinese ex-seamen opened restaurants. The first recorded establishment was called The Chinese Restaurant, and is thought to have opened in 1908 in Piccadilly Circus, London” (BBC FOOD, 2014). When they move to another place they try to show their own food culture in many different ways and one of the ways is through open a restaurant. Most of Chinese restaurant has late opening hour, that is why westerner choose Chinese food to eat in the late night. Like what Aubrey Ko said as a research coordinator who worked on the British Chinese Food Culture project “They had a drink in a pub, they were hungry. Then they went to a takeaway Chinese restaurant still open during the night.". For preparing certain dishes from certain country, usually we need specific kitchen utensils. For examples to make a dim sum or dumpling we need bamboo steamers. When Chinese immigrant come to a western country and open the restaurant, they bring the bamboo steamers. For westerners, maybe it is something new when they see how Chinese people steam their food and because of the curiosity they will try it at home. They don't make a dim sum or dumpling, but …show more content…
“The effects of the crisis with regard to poverty and vulnerability in both the developed and the developing world are likely to continue for some time. For instance, the World Bank estimates that the ‘Triple F’ crisis (food, fuel and finance) will increase the number of global poor by between 53 and 64 million people in 2009” (UNICEF, 2009). The financial crisis that happens will lead to another problem like a chain. The main problem that can happen from the financial crisis is malnutrition because in this situation people will more selected on food. Because of increases in food price, people will tend to choose poor quality food and not concern about nutritive value from the food. When they choose the poor quality food that is mean, they will lack of some nutrition such as vitamins, mineral and proteins that their body needs and it can lead to malnutrition as well. malnutrition can really affect our lives in many different ways. For examples of the impact is they who get malnutrition will be unproductive because they don’t have enough energy to their daily activity and they can’t think clearly, of children it can hinder the development of their bodies. For pregnant woman, it also can cause reduced birth weight, increase the prevalence of low birth weight babies and increase maternal and child
On one side, menu items of Chinese restaurants change a lot when the Chinese immigrants came to the United States. For instance, authentic Chinese restaurants does not have General Tso’s Chicken and fortune cookies. The dish of General Tso’s Chicken is originally from America. Since the General Tso’s chicken has a same name with a famous Chinese statesman in the last century. Most people think it is authentic Chinese food. But actually, it is inauthentic Chinese food. There is a joke of this disk. That is even Zongtang Zuo does not eat General Tso’s chicken because of the dish of name is from Zongtang Zuo (“The Strange Tale”). The other is fortune cookies. People do not eat fortune cookies after they finish all dishes in China because there are cultural differences. In China, the Chinese restaurants has not a traditional culture which eats fortune cookies after finish eating all dishes. Also, the cold water does not exist at the dinner table in China. Hot water is almost always served (Xiaoyu Yan). But, the cold water absolutely appeared in the Chinese restaurants in the United States. Even the authentic menu items do not include either fortune cookies or General Tso’s Chicken. On the other side, Chow Mein is a traditional Chinese food. But, the chef changes the cooking process of Chow Mein in the United States. The reason is the owner of restaurant wants to adapt
Asians are one of the fastest growing groups in the United States and their culture is unique. A majority of the Asian culture is known for making big dinners to bring the family together to simply talk or celebrate together. There are three main categories of Asian dietary culture, which are the southwest, northwest and southeast. We will be focusing on the second largest dietary culture of Asia, which is in the northeast that contains China, Korea, and Japan. Food in this culture is not only a method of fueling ones body it is also used in certain types of medicines to heal ailments and also used in religious offerings.
The Western Diet mainly consists of fried foods, refined grains, sugar, high carbohydrate and fats, and meats (3). It has been hypothesized that having a Western Diet increases one’s chances for developing depression. There has been a great deal of research into why the western diet increase’s one chance of having depression. A common sense reason maybe that the Western Diet consisted of large amounts carbohydrates, fats and sugars which promotes obesity and then causes depression (1). More scientific evidence suggest that having a improper diet like the Western Diet negatively affects peripheral and central dopamine, which are neurotransmitters (chemical which transmit signals across the synapse from the nerve cell to the target cell) directly linked to the mental health of the brain and are negatively affected by high fat diets (4). Research has also suggested that having a poor nutrition status such as lacking folate (a natural water form of vitamin bg which is crucial for many of the bodies processes) and key vitamins like vitamin b12 significantly increases the risk of depression in elderly people (5). Research into the topic of dietary habits and mental health is very crucial with the growing rates of obesity and depression in the United States compared to the rest of the world. Thus, does having poor dietary habits increase the likelihood of having depression? The likelihood of developing depression has been linked to the type of diet one consumes such as the Western Diet, Diets Low in Fat and Carbohydrates and weight control diets like binge eating.
Gundersen, Waxman, Engelhard, and Brown (2010) found in their study that 50 million people (including 17 million children) were food insecure in 2010. Poverty and food insecurity affects the lives of billions of people worldwide and millions of people in the United States. More than two billion pe...
When cultural diffusion happens, “adjustments are made to accommodate the value of the host society” (Lu & Fine 538). This adjustment, a process in America referred as Americanization, varies among the many cuisines present in the country (Lu & Fine 538). When looking specifically at the Chinese ethic food, some changes occurred between authentic and the Americanized version. As explained by the owner of a Chinese restaurant, Sichuan, in Lu & Fine’s article, Americans are not particularly found of fish head and
I was born in one of the countries in Asia, and our staple food is rice. Rice is always at the center of the table, and the rest of the viand surrounds it. Here in the United States, my household still eat rice every day, accompanied by cooked vegetables and meat. My food choices are influenced by culture and family. Vegetables and fruits of my choice are abundant at the International Market and other Asian grocery stores. Vegetables are also available for a cheaper price at the farmers market. I myself buy these foods to ensure its freshness, prepare and cook them for my entire family. Inspired by Asian and American cuisine, our food is prepared with variety of cooking styles; such as dry like barbecues, baked and fried, with sauce
There are many problems confronting our global food system. One of them is that the food is not distributed fairly or evenly in the world. According “The Last Bite Is The World’s Food System Collapsing?” by Bee Wilson, “we are producing more food—more grain, more meat, more fruits and vegetables—than ever before, more cheaply than ever before” (Wilson, 2008). Here we are, producing more and more affordable food. However, the World Bank recently announced that thirty-three countries are still famine and hungers as the food price are climbing. Wilson stated, “despite the current food crisis, last year’s worldwide grain harvest was colossal, five per cent above the previous year’s” (Wilson, 2008). This statement support that the food is not distributed evenly. The food production actually increased but people are still in hunger and malnutrition. If the food were evenly distributed, this famine problem would’ve been not a problem. Wilson added, “the food economy has created a system in w...

Famine has struck parts of Africa several times during the 20th century, and to this day is still going strong. According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, the average African consumes 2300 kcal/day, less than the global average of 2700 kcal/day. Recent figures estimate that 316 million Africans, or approximately 35 percent of the continent's total population, is undernourished. Although hunger in Africa is hardly new, it now occurs in a world that has more than enough food to feed all its citizens. Moreover, while Africa's population is growing rapidly, it still has ample fertile land for growing food. Hunger therefore reflects not absolute food scarcity but rather people's lack of access to resources—whether at the individual, house-hold, comunity, or national leve that are needed to produce or purchase adequate food supplies. The reasons people cannot obtain enough food are: several different historical patterns of in equality. These patterns include the in equalities between Africa and its former colonisers or contemporary financiers, and between Africa's rich and poor. It also includes in equality between members of the same households, where food and the resources needed to obtain it (such as land and income) are often unevenly distributed between men and women, old and young. Whatever the reasons for food deprivation, when the result is malnutrition it can do damage, increasing diseases such as malaria, rickets, anemia, and perhaps acquired immune deficiency syndrome aka AIDS Mal-nourished children suffer stunted growth and, often, learning problems. Malnourished adults have less energy to work. Over the long term, inadequate nourishment can cast communities into a cycle o...
“Malnourished children are 20% less literate than those with a healthier diet, says UK charity Save the Children” (The Information Daily). When parents become victims of poverty it can have some very unpleasing long and short term effects to their children. Parents in poverty have a lot on their plate and buying the best quality food or affording enough food can be a tumultuous task. Quality nutrition is essential for the development of the brain. At a young age, poor nutrition or not enough nutrition can seriously hinder “the brain 's development, a child’s ability to learn and has a devastating impact on a child’s future”(The Information Daily). “Malnutrition in the early developmental stages of the brain, by restricting the children’s cognitive growth, can lower a child 's IQ has much has 20 points”(The Information Daily). Long term effects of malnutrition leave permanent damage to the brain, however, malnutrition has short term effects as well. Malnourishment can greatly compromise a child’s immune system, making them more susceptible to infectious diseases. “Low counts of zinc, iron and vitamin A are commonly associated with weakened immune function” (Orphan Nutrition). A deadly infection can have a huge impact on a poverty stricken family leading to less affordability. Malnutrition negatively affects a student throughout their educational
Anyone can agree that cultures vary significantly. Anywhere from society views, to genetics, and even food! The eating habits of all the different cultures in the world are one of the most significant changes between nations and cultures to other nations and cultures. Anywhere in the world will have different eating habits, for example, Americans eat small meals throughout the day and then indulge in a big filling meal for supper, while in Mexico, breakfast tends to be the biggest meal of the day. Now, because of these changes in cultural views, anthropology is very much involved. This is why I am going to go in depth on the eating habits from four different cultures: Japanese, Mexican, and American.
The food crisis is a conflict that approaches and affects the whole world. The world food crisis has been created by mainly large amounts of population; this is because there are so many people living in each country. The large amounts of people have an effect on how the farmers because it keeps getting harder to harvest enough food for the whole population. Therefore the price for many food product goes up and it becomes harder and harder for the average person to do their shopping. In America alone around 15 percent of the inhabitants are receiving food stamps from the government to purchase food with this is because they alone do not have the sufficient found to do this. The world food crisis strikes the third world countries the worst, these countries do not have the money to give there inhabitants food stamps. Most people in third world countries cannot afford regular food; this is because the farmers cannot grow enough food and or because the weather cannot sustain proper farming. For example many countries get hit by bad weather and natural disasters. Besides that a farmer can on average only harvest in some months and not all.
Food insecurity and poor nutrition is an alarmingly large problem for low income families, especially in developing countries. Many strategies exist to fight this problem, although not many of these address all the factors contributing to it along with all the possible solutions to solve it. In many cases, multiple strategies must correlate and work together so that all the determinants of this issue are addressed and can fight food insecurity from different angles. This essay will discuss the significance of the problem, a range of possible strategies to solve the problem, and go into detail on a select few that will correlate and work together to solve different factors of food insecurity and poor nutrition.
China is famous for its food, its famous in all parts of the world. However, in most of the places, the way Chinese food is cooked, the ingredients used while cooking etc., have been changed to increase its productivity, especially in UK. The best part about it is that, Chinese always use fresh food while cooking, be it vegetables, fruits, sea food or meat, they hardly eat canned or frozen items. The Chinese are more concerned about its food’s flavour, colour, texture and aroma rather than health. It can be said that when it comes to cooking and eating, they worship freshness and flavour. In India however, as far as I have witnessed things, although freshness is preferred, people don’t really mind eating canned and frozen items.
Western societies’ diet is potentially causing the increase of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) due to the high consumption of meats in every meal. NAFLD occurs when the liver is composed of over 10 percent of fat from a non-alcoholic diet. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease can cause serious liver dysfunction, scarring of the tissue in the liver as well as lead to cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Obesity is among one of the risk factors for NAFLD. Fortunately living a healthy lifestyle consisting of exercise and a balanced diet can curb the risk and severity of the condition.
