American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is an individual membership professional organization which has set up certain rules and regulations for supervision and teamwork. 1 APTA has defined different types of supervision to be followed by professional personnel. It is important to know those laws to meet the professional standards. Each state has its own practice acts. Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) has given certain rules which is explained in “Department Of Community Health Board Of Physical Therapy General Rules” 2,7,8 & 9
APTA defined 3 levels of supervision, 3 the first one is General Supervision 3 in which the PT is not required to be on site for direction and supervision, but must be available at least by telecommunications. Next is Direct Supervision 3 wherein the physical therapist is physically present and immediately available for direction and supervision. Telecommunications does not meet the requirement of direct supervision. Lastly, Direct Personal Supervision 3 in which the physical therapist or, where allowable by law, the physical therapist assistant is physically present and immediately available to direct and supervise tasks that are related to patient/client management. The direction and supervision is continuous throughout the time these tasks are performed. Telecommunications does not meet the requirement of direct personal supervision. 3
According to APTA’s Provision of Physical Therapy Interventions and Related Tasks, 4 Physical therapy aides are any support personnel who perform designated tasks related to the operation of the physical therapy service.
