American Heritage ranks number one out of high schools in Florida for the 7th straight year and number nine out of 22,000 high schools throughout the nation. In simpler terms, American Heritage creates a tough academic environment. Through my fourteen years of education, school remains a challenge. The intense curriculum challenges students, the abundant clubs provide many opportunities, and the teachers demand dedication and focus. American Heritage represents the terrifying dragon I must slay as Beowulf defeated his own. Since 2002, I have struggled, but still succeeded. Nothing ever came to me easily. I had to fight tooth and nail to learn and thrive. It seemed as if Heritage waited for me to slip up. During first grade and second grade
Thought of as a true American hero from the positive actions he had on society, author of the Declaration of Independence, true believer to live by the Bible, Thomas Jefferson; hopeful to change the world for better, took on presidency in March 1801. All creditable titles go to show how dedicated Thomas Jefferson was in creating his vision of a better world he so desired, as many present day presidential candidates create now and share with the voters.
In the Hawaiian culture, “Ohana” is a significant phrase referring to the bondage of family. There are many heritages across the world that have their own way of communicating that affection and showing their love to their own heritage. Hispanic heritage, for example, have the delicious food while other cultures have different focuses. Through heritage, communities find their niches in society to form an American Heritage. Though heritage exists through communities sharing a common culture, heritage definitely coincides with family and reigning stability within their niche. America’s public school system started off very rough, but through the dedication of many hard-working Americans, it was starting to shape into a system that allowed all children, regardless of race, gender, religion, or nation of origin, to have an education.
The four major events significant to the foundation and evolution of the United States today that I have chosen are: the Positive and Negative Impacts of European Contact, the American Military Victory in the Revolutionary War, Slavery and States Rights, and Reconstruction and the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments. All four of these events from the first half of the history of the United States played integral roles into making the United States into what it is today.
The audience includes people who deal with policy change in government, schoolboards or even parents interested in their child’s education. McGray achieves his purpose by painting a picture of American society today through examples and shows the progression of foreign education through historical evidence. Through anecdotes, expert opinion and statistics, McGray successfully informs the audience of how foreign education is ignored in America despite the growing need for such education in the future and urges change in school curriculum.
Nikki Giovanni and Linda Hogan both wrote poems in the 1970s about their grandmothers that seem totally different to the unaware reader. In actuality, they are very similar. These two poems, Legacies and Heritage, express the poet’s value of knowledge passed down from grandmother to granddaughter, from generation to generation. Even though the poems are composed and read very differently, the underlying message conveyed is the same, and each are valid first-hand accounts of legacies and heritages.
I had a difficult time learning in school. I became a few years behind my grade level and my parents considered having me repeat a grade. My learning support teacher worked with me one on one for months and taught me how to study and work hard. I continued working hard and started getting better grades, and soon I became top of my class. I kept studying and strived to get the best possible grades throughout middle school and high school. I looked to challenge myself and took advanced placement classes. I don’t think I would have worked hard in high school, if I had not struggled earlier on, I would most likely be on a completely different life
On June 4, 1776 America finally got its independence, but it was truly a struggle for all the colonists to get this far in order to have a structured government and to win freedom. The success that the colonists gained was not only the strategies that George Washington created, nor was it the help from the French. Taking those examples into consideration, they were very important actions to win the revolution, but not as important as the joined efforts of the states to rebel against the King. The main reason why we won the American Revolution was because of proper protest, choices made, and connection during the revolution. This caused many great ideas to appear for a future, and a more reasonable government in which law was king and the people ran the government. Once the patriots got through all the British, a new country began which is now America. From the past we can gather a great amount of information of how the colonists used these methods of protest to bypass and become independent from the government.
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the American educational system has undergone much transition in response to our changing society. Though there have been many problems raised throughout the years in regard to what our school systems should be teaching our children, there have also been many developments.
Humans have a tendency to to change with time. Human are the most intelligent creatures and can adapt and survive in any environment. People evolve as time changes. It is human nature to want for new things and new change. United States changed a lot since the mid-1400s till today. Some are good, some are bad. But even though change is inevitable, there are lot things that are still common. Some things never change. From the time Columbus discovered America till today, a lot of things have changed. He is known as the father of this country. Even though he didn’t have the end that he deserved, he is the reason for this great country to bloom out of sheer darkness. Great leaders like Thomas Jefferson have played an important role to shape America to what it is right now. John Winthrop was the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the chief figure among the Puritan founders of New England. He was the one to establish a civilized society in the middle of nowhere and help United States bloom. Thomas Jefferson- author of the Declaration of Independence, third president of United States and the founder of the University of Virginia- crafted the freedom of the United States from the brutal British regime. Jefferson was an exceptionally vivid man, and very politically motivated. He helped found our country, nurturing it along in its youthful, tempestuous beginnings, and he struggled to improve upon it in many ways. As time passes, we see a lot of differences and somewhat similarities in racism, gender equality, freedom, religion, slavery, and standard of life and these factors are responsible for the America we stand upon today.
As a native of Miami, Florida, I have witnessed the many cultural changes that have taken place over the years. As an educator teaching within the nation’s fifth largest public school district for the past 25 years, I have had a great amount of exposure to the cultural diversity that makes up the public school, and I have become very familiar with challenges, family issues, and cultural differences that can influence the educational performance of my students. I have developed an understanding that in order to provide the most successful learning environment for culturally diverse student’s, teachers must be able to provide classroom instruction that is free of personal bias and which addresses the diversified cultural learning needs of every student. Too many schools are not set up to give students an education that teaches them to love learning and takes their individual needs into account (Castleman & Littky, 2007).
Europeans and people throughout the world came to America to evade religious oppression and begin anew with a culture that was like no other. In the nineteenth century, Ralph Waldo Emerson made a statement of how America was declaring cultural independence from their European ancestry. The United States became a melting pot of the world; blending people, language and heritage creating opportunity for even the the lowest and most hated ethnic groups. Slaves began to have their own unique culture and literature for the first time. America had it’s own literary movement sparking creativity that evolved into significant components of modern culture.
While looking over my transcripts, I observed that my grades for the most part either remained bad or got worse second semester. Despite how I perform in those classes I have the easiest time understanding math, and the hardest time with history. The trends in my transcript correlate to how I’ve been my entire life, I give up easily. Once the smallest thing goes wrong I give up rather than trying persevering. I choose to keep rolling down a hill because it's easier, rather than to push myself to climb it.
While both interviewees stated they did not feel their institutions were ignoring different races and groups and lesson plans were designed around promotion multiculturalism, schools that primarily white often fail to be as cultural diverse as schools with a healthy racial composition. Lesson plans are often ambivalent towards understanding the struggles and hardships of certain racial groups, such as the Native Americans during the time of European exploration. In addition, students at mostly white institutions often associated success with how hard an individual works rather than any hardships or racist or sexist acts thrown upon that person. Ironically, the little multiculturalism that is introduced in prominently white schools has been ill received by parents and teachers. Both parties, especially parents, argue that the children growing up today are “color-blind” and that no explicit efforts to inject multiculturalism should occur in the classroom outside of settings considered appropriate, such as history courses (Lewis, 2003:
I did not fail any of my classes and instead received good grades for my perseverance. As an immigrant to a new country, my greatest barrier is English. Consequently, I had to go to tutoring and work three times more than native English speaking students. But despite the frustrations, I never allowed myself to give up. I never stopped striving for excellence. I worked very hard and took advantage of extra credit opportunities, even though I was already earning a good grade in the course. My short-term academic goals are graduating from Cosumnes River College in Spring 2019 with an Associate of Science degree. I plan to start my bachelor degree next fall at CSU, Sacramento and graduate in spring 2022. I am motivated to succeed because my degree is not only for me but also the epitome of how far my family has
