In my opinion, the most important social issue today is the aging education system in America.
There are sundry issues to be concerned with in America, to include the list provided, however, I firmly believe that ensuring a solid education to the youth of this country, can build a foundation that will provide significant benefits to fighting the plights of these other issues. If the quality of the American elementary education is not updated to greet the ever changing world and the ever changing way in which we learn, a fundamental lack will begin to creep into all aspects of life. The education of individuals may well be a social change that this group would take on to ensure equality for all. The conflict theorist would have no issue with education but it would absolutely demand that all be afforded the same opportunity to access it.
The interactionist perspective is more focused on how individuals make sense of or interpret the social world in which they participate. It is literally, the study of how individuals interact within a society. The interactionist would want to understand the educational needs of each individual, and would be likely to say that we cannot generalize and assume that everyone has the same viewpoints for education. Instead they believe everyone has different attitudes, values, culture and beliefs thus the continuing education of an individual is not a decision for an entire society to make.

The greatest country in the world still has problems evenly distributing education to its youth. The articles I have read for this unit have a common theme regarding our education system. The authors illustrate to the reader about the struggles in America concerning how we obtain and education. Oppression, politics, racism, and socioeconomic status are a few examples of what is wrong with our country and its means of delivering a fair education to all Americans.
The human mind is perhaps the greatest object on the earth, animate or inanimate, but without the proper training, the mind is a relatively useless tool. Through the development of formal education systems, humans as a whole have tried to ensure the training of all minds so as to continue prosperity for the world. Education is very important in our life. It measures our life chances and the window of opportunity to success in the society. Our education institution not only teaches us how to write, read and communicate thoroughly, but also social skills that enable us to become a productive citizen of society. The U.S. have taken enormous pride of its ability to provide top-notch education and freedom of its access. "It's the promise of American public education: no matter who you are or where you come from, you will be tugged gently along the path of learning, toward graduation and an open but hopeful future"(Dropout nation). However, the U.S. education is failing- one out of three students in public high school would not graduate, and for African American students, the rates is one out of two. Dropping out of school is no longer an occasion for bad students, but a social phenomenon, a silent epidemic that slowly eaten the strongest nation in the world. The causes of this epidemic is not one, but multifaceted: government, media and family are all part of its causes and solutions. In order to tackle this problem, we must identity our fault and short coming in the past.
The victory won for America’s independence marked the birth of a nation, and subsequently the birth of an educational system. When America was formed, we didn’t have a way to educate our citizens. This was a huge problem since without a properly educated population democracy falls apart, so America had to act fast. In the textbook Sociology chapter one talks about three sociological theories: functionalist, conflict, and interactionism. All three sociological theories have something to do with each social institution. Functionalist perspective is a sociological approach that emphasizes the way of which the parts of a society are structured to maintain its stability (Schaefer, 24). Functionalist applies to the education sociological institution by teaching knowledge and skills, cultural transmission, social control, and some agents of structured change. All of these are important in making sure that education is structured to maintain its stability. The conflict perspective is a sociological approach that assumes that social behavior is best understood in terms of tension between groups over power or the allocation of resources, including housing, money, access to services, and political representation (Schaefer, 24). Conflict applies to the education sociological institution by reproducing social order, using hidden curriculum, intolerance and inequality, credentialism, and status. Using hidden curriculum refers to standards of behavior that are deemed proper y society and are taught subtly in schools (Schaefer, 315). Status refers to standardized testing, tracking, public/private, gender, class, and role. And then there is the interactionism perspective. Interactionism perspective is a sociological approach that generalizes about everyday forms of social interaction in order to explain society as a whole (Schaefer, 24).
A theoretical paradigm is the identification of the underlying basis that is used to construct a scientific investigation; or, “a loose collection of logically held together assumptions, concepts, and propositions that orientates thinking and research” (Bogdan & Biklan, 1982, p. 30). Attending public schools as a child, I remember learning the basic skills on how to add and subtract, read, and write. These basic skills are necessary in order to function in our society and work force in the United States. As we all know each child learns differently, some learn faster than others and some slower than others. Our public schools have become overcrowded and we do not have enough teachers to fit the needs of each student. Some students get left behind and are not learning the skills needed to move on to the next level. What these students are not learning they can learn in higher education such as a college or university. In this report, I would like to express the importance of a higher education. I will use the works of John Henry Newman, Jon Spayde and Mike Rose, all three writers believe in having an educated society. Our students’ needs are changing, there are a growing number of immigrants with children coming to the United States from all over the world. They bring with them the language and culture of their country. The age in which they arrive to the United States determines how well they learn English and what skills they will need to acquire to become productive in our society. The task of teaching our children the basic skills is becoming harder and harder each day, making it harder for our education system to achieve their goals. There are a high number of students graduating from high school who does not have the skills needed to meet the needs of the work force in our society. A higher level of learning is needed to make our society literate.
A time approaches in every person’s life when they must come to learn new things. Speaking on behalf of all those who have attended school at some point in their life, I must say that most do not like it for its educational significance. Today’s youth undervalue the worth of America’s public school system to the point of shame. Hard-working, underpaid teachers and professors prepare to educate these ingrates as their living, and it’s exasperating for the students to not even care. I must be fair though and call attention to the fact that not everyone shares this loathe for education and schooling.
