Imagine a life in darkness, not being able to see anything, not knowing what something as simple as a picture looks like. That’s what blind people have to go through every day. Blind people don’t know what anything around them looks like, their mom, dad, nothing. How do they read? Braille, the blind use braille daily and without it they would need someone with them 24/7 to read everything such as bathroom signs. Let’s explore braille and how it came to be how it is today by answering questions like what was the need for braille, what was life like before braille, what was the impact of braille then, and what is the impact of braille today?
The need for braille then is simple the blind needed an easier way to read and write and there were many teams of people looking at ways for blind people to read. Louis Braille was on a team and he discovered this French “Night Writing” and then the idea for the six dot cell system emerged. The problem is that many people want to eliminate braille completely because “technology can do it for them”. That’s like going into a class room of six year old students and telling them that they don’t need to learn reading and writing because technology will do it for them. It sounds silly, but blind children are told that every day. When children with vision loss are learning to read, braille is the best way to develop spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills. Audiotapes and computers that speak through a voice synthesizer program provide access to all sorts of written tools, but they don’t give new readers the tools they need to read and write themselves. Studies show that blind people who use braille are more likely to get a job than someone without braille. Braille improved education in many ways, it gave a university accepted system which helped make education for the blind more organized and successful, also it was the most compacted system which made it easier to read and more fluent. Before braille reading was hard for the blind because it was lettering in large pieces of wood and it was influent and really slow. Many blind people ended up as beggars because their families couldn’t support them and they didn’t have the education to get a job. And that answers the questions of, what was life like before braille, what was the need for braille, what was the impact of braille then, and now.
The book Blind, written by Rachel DeWoskin, is about a highschool sophomore named Emma, who went blind after being struck in the face with a firework. When she first lost her sight, Emma was placed in a hospital for over 2 months, and once she was released, she could finally go home again. DeWoskin uses the characterization of Emma throughout the beginning of the text to help the reader understand the character’s struggle more. Especially in the first few chapters, it was difficult for Emma to adapt to a world without sight. For instance, DeWoskin writes, “And sat down, numb, on our gold couch. And tried to open my eyes, rocked, counted my legs and arms and fingers. I didn’t cry. Or talk” (DeWoskin 44). As a result of losing a very important scent, she’s started to act differently from a person with sight.
In the following chapters, there is an extensive amount of knowledge to learn about how Deaf culture is involved in our modern world. The pages assigned give us an outlook of how Deaf people are treated in our daily life, and how we should learn from it. Its gives a clear line between what are myths and what are facts, to those who are curious about the Deaf community or have specific questions. This book has definitely taught me new things that I could put to good use in the near future. In specific chapters, my mind really opened up to new ideas and made me think hard about questions, like “why don’t some Deaf people trust hearing people,” or “do we need another ‘Deaf president now’ revolution?” I realized many new things in the course of reading this book, and have recommended this to my family.
This will benefit Billy and his peer helper. The device would be considered low tech. Since Billy wears glasses he can use a computer with a screen reading software. Which will allow him to see the text displayed and hear what is being said while looking at the word. Screen reading software would be considered high tech. Both devices can be used to assist Billy in a regular classroom. Billy can use the classroom devices at desk to have a better understanding of what’s being taught. During choice or computer time Billy can use the screen reading to review what he didn’t understand during teaching instructions. I think both devices will interest and encourage Billy to want to
In the beginning of the book, the author talks about deafness. He believe that deafness is not something that should be looked down upon. His beliefs people reduce their thoughts about people with disabilities. He talks about other beliefs on deafness and hard of hearing. The first printing press was created to make books (Mostly bibles in the day) cheaper and more accessible. At this time only nobles and scribes new how to read and write. In result of this press, written pieces became commonplace making the common people needing to know how to read and write. This literacy spread and spread as the printing press became more common and caused the majority of the world’s people to be as literate as it is today which helped to revolutionize the work
In literature, blindness serves a general significant meaning of the absence of knowledge and insight. In life, physical blindness usually represents an inability or handicap, and those people afflicted with it are pitied. The act of being blind can set limitations on the human mind, thus causing their perception of reality to dramatically change in ways that can cause fear, personal insecurities, and eternal isolation. However, “Cathedral” utilizes blindness as an opportunity to expand outside those limits and exceed boundaries that can produce a compelling, internal change within an individual’s life. Those who have the ability of sight are able to examine and interpret their surroundings differently than those who are physically unable to see. Carver suggests an idea that sight and blindness offer two different perceptions of reality that can challenge and ultimately teach an individual to appreciate the powerful significance of truly seeing without seeing. Therefore, Raymond Carver passionately emphasizes a message that introduces blindness as not a setback, but a valuable gift that can offer a lesson of appreciation and acceptance toward viewing the world in a more open-minded perspective.
A hearing loss can present many obstacles in one's life. I have faced many issues throughout my life, many of which affected me deeply. When I first realized that I was hearing-impaired, I didn't know what it meant. As I grew older, I came to understand why I was different from everyone. It was hard to like myself or feel good about myself because I was often teased. However, I started to change my attitude and see that wearing hearing aids was no different than people wearing glasses to see.
Living with the learning condition dyslexia, can be a very hard challenge to face alone and thanks to the essay “Living with Dyslexia” by Gareth Cook, he allows us to see the challenges he faced while growing up. Cook states “I was never able to learn cursive, and I am virtually unable to take handwritten notes while someone is talking.” (158). this is a powerful statement by Gareth Cook as this is a biography on his challenges with Dyslexia. Students in modern society multitask daily by taking notes and listening to the teacher. It is something we are taught how to do at a younger age and we build up our knowledge on how to do it better each year. Cook describes what goes on in a dyslexic’s brain very well… He said “Dyslexia involves a problem with how the brain translates sounds and those funny squiggles on a page.” (159). This statement here shows how valuable language is in learning how to read and write. Without the birth of our language, we could potentially have the verbal capacity of a baby and that would lead us nowhere. Most careers in any field of work demand the ability to be able to speak a language and communicate with their peers. We learn how to speak at a very young age and learn to read and write as the years progress. However unfortunately with Gareth Cook, it took him a bit longer to learn the reading and writing process. Not being able to read and write as well as the rest of the population, can hinder the confidence of some children with dyslexia but for the most part I think it would encourage them just to try even
Individuals who are deaf or are hearing impaired are faced with many problems in today’s world. There are so many tasks and activities that are done today that deaf or hearing impaired people may have difficulty doing because of there handicap. There handicap used to stop them or inhibit them from doing something that they are interested in or there friends and neighbors would do. However in today there are new and different technologies, that help the deaf and hearing impaired in the activities in which they want to participate in which is hard for them to take part in because of there handicap. Technology is used to help with everyday tasks in the lives of deaf and hearing impaired individuals. With out this new technology which is being invented everyday, deaf and hearing impaired people may be considered to have a handicap which prevents them from certain activities, but this is not the case anymore, now these people just have different obstacles which through the use of technology they are learning to over come. They can do anything that regular normal range of hearing individuals can do, due to the new technology being invented everyday.

Learning disabilities are very common among students in today’s society. Some students have specific needs that must be met in order for them to learn, while other students are not getting the help that they need to succeed in the classroom. Reading disabilities, related to the disability of dyslexia (National Center for Learning Disabilities, 2014), can be met with certain assistive technology that can make learning to read easier for the students. A type of assistive technology that helps reading disabilities is an audio book that allows students to hear the book read to them with the option of following along (Raskind & Stanberry, 2010). Audio books allow the students to focus on the purpose of the book; rather than struggling to read the book and focus on what the book is trying to explain. Since this type of assistive technology reads out loud to the students, it can guide them to learn how to read certain words correctly and how to grasp the concepts of the book easier. A specific type of an audio book source is Audible (Raskind & Stanberry, 2010), which allows the user to download and auto book on to a “smartphone, tablet, or desktop” (Audible Inc., 2014, p. 1). This source benefits students because they can listen to book in a classroom setting or they can listen to the book at home, especially when writing a book report.
With that knowledge the deaf character gained more confidence when communicating and was able to achieve bigger goals in their life then when they had little to no knowledge of how things worked in society. Everyone knows Alexander Graham Bell, the man behind the creative invention; the telephone. Not only was the telephone one of the biggest invention in the history of America, but it was the most successful one as well. During Graham Bell’s time period, the only way you could communicate to others was by writing letters which had usually taken about a week to get delivered due to the lack of transportation. While amused by Alexander, creation of the first telephone, he also created something to help deaf people. After his mother hearing started to decrease both Alexander and his father created something called, Visible Speech.
