QUESTION 2: ESSAY QUESTION Popular culture whether it be through music, films, comic books, movies and many more do provide take away messages to the society and the world about certain issues including the matter regarding social consciousness. As popular culture has becoming a trend, it does influence people’s lives and has a huge impact on individuals, society and even to the world in a bigger context that helps to create more awareness towards social issues. So, what does it really mean by social consciousness? According to Karl Marx, human beings enter into certain productive, or economic, relations and these relations lead to a form of social consciousness. This song talks about the differences of nationalities, religions and races that become the factors which divide the world and there are no sense of unity amongst all human beings due to the emphasization on these differences. In his lyric, he is trying to convey the message that why not all human beings put aside all differences in nationalities, races and so on that we have with each other and embrace the differences while asking people to imagine a harmony and better world. This can be seen in the line “Imagine there's no countries, It isn't hard to do” and “Imagine all the people, Living life in peace”. Then, in the line “Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can, no need for greed or hunger”, John Lennon also touches that mankind are greedy and insensible towards other people’s sufferings, poorness and rich people keep wanting to become richer. Therefore, he is inviting us to imagine what it feels like to have no possessions and how magnificent a world can be if people care for each other, share the world together and the riches could help the poor ones even though these are not the actuality in today’s world. In addition to that, the chorus of this song depicts that even if people say that he is a dreamer but he is confident that everyone in this world would agree with him one day. Basically, this song rejects the idea of nationalism, capitalism and materialism in which John Lennon believes that this world can be peaceful without all of these elements and the war or people killing each other should be stopped.
