The Impact of Groups Such as The Beatles on the Nineteen-Sixties

Groups such as the Beatles effected British society in many ways in

the period of the 1960's. The course of the Beatles came in 3 distinct

phases between 1962 and 1968.

The Beatles were an all male quartet from the North West working class

city of Liverpool. John Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and Paul

McCartney would set about changing popular music forever.

The Beatles had many musical influences ranging from Elvis Pressley to

Chuck Berry. There performances were famed for being long and amazing

on some occasions it was known that they continued to play non stop

for 8 hours.

Much of there early music could be heard in the back streets of

Liverpool, in clubs like the cavern and small clubs in the German city

of Hamburg. The Beatles were becoming the complete antithesis of

manufactured pop acts that followed the initial rock n roll from the

USA.

They were different in several ways from any other music which was

around at that time. They wore classy suits and had unique and

distinctive hair styles.

Brian Epstein was manager of the lads and George Martin produces some

of there greatest musical efforts. Both gifted in there own fields

they brought the group exactly what they needed. They did not take any

of their earnings, leaving it instead for them to do with what they

pleased.

The quartets were extremely inventive with there new style of album

sleeve, no longer was plain and informative the thing to have, the

Beatles wanted colour and things that made people want to but the

record.

60's in their songs. Tunes such as Lucy in the Sky with diamonds and I

am the Walrus told of supposed journeys Lennon and McCartney had taken

after experimenting with LSD.

I am the Walrus featured elements of Lewis Carroll's Alice in

Wonderland. Fictional creatures such as 'semolina pilchards' and 'egg

men' were commonplace.

Despite there huge popularity some people managed to dislike the

Beatles and thus became there strong opposition. Groups such as The

Conservative Party and the Klu Klux Klan.

The Conservatives deemed there later music to be to risqué due to its

sexual undertones and the openness about the drug takings.

The Klu Klux Klan did not like the group because they felt they

betrayed white music after taking in other music styles from other

cultures into there music.
