In 1818 the novel ‘Frankenstein’ was written by Mary Shelley. Shelley wrote the novel after having a dream about bringing one of her children back to life using Galvanism (which was discovered around the time of her writing.) The novel was controversial at the time because a lot of people in those days were religious and the novel is about a man creating life as if he is God. Is the monster innocent? Or does he represent the evil that lies within us all? Is he a representation of Shelley’s own childbirth experiences? Is the monster Rousseau’s ‘Noble Savage’? Whatever the monster symbolises he has a massive impact upon the readers of the novel.
In chapters 4 and 5 Frankenstein is at Ingolstadt University studying ‘natural philosophy’. At university Frankenstein is too wrapped up in his studies to go and see his family, “Two years passed in this manner, during which I paid no visit to Geneva.” Frankenstein warns Walton that too much knowledge is dangerous, yet he perseveres on his pursuit for knowledge of creation. At the beginning of chapter five Frankenstein brings the monster to life on a ‘dreary November night’. Frankenstein abandons the monster and wanders the streets of Ingolstadt feeling sick. He returns to his apartment where he hallucinates that there is a monster with him “I thought I saw the dreaded spectre glide into the room” Both chapters use many gothic elements to build suspense and engage the reader.
Shelley uses gothic elements throughout the novel to create a sense of mystery and tension. One of these gothic elements is grandeur language. This is a contrast to what you read about Frankenstein’s childhood earlier in the novel.
Frankenstein could be seen as the ‘Modern Prometheus’ because just like Prometheus stole fire from the Gods, Frankenstein is stealing like from God. “I might infuse a spark of life into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet” Frankenstein desires to acquire all knowledge of create. Yet he tells Walton that too much knowledge is dangerous. Does this make Frankenstein a hypocrite? Or is he driven by power and a desire to attain the unknown?
The Significance of Chapter 5 in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Works Cited Not Included This essay will consider the significance of Chapter five to the rest of the novel, and look at how Mary Shelley's life has influenced her writing. I am going to focus mainly on Chapter five, but first I am going to consider some important aspects of the preceding chapters. In Chapter one Victor describes how his mother and father met and how he and Elizabeth where brought together. When he first describes her, it contrasts greatly with his primary depiction of the creature "Her brow was clear and ample, her blue eyes cloudless, and her Lips and the moulding of her face so expressive of sensibility and Sweetness" (chapter 1, pg 36). Whereas Frankenstein's description of his creation is "His watery eyes his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips" (chapter 5, pg 58).
I believe Frankenstein is a villain in this book. I believe he promotes the idea of evil which is symbolised through creating the creature. He is described as “a creature causing havoc”. The creature is an unwanted person. He has no belonging in this world. He was created, and because of this, he is an outcast because of Victor Frankenstein. The creature is the victim. He is lonely and rejected. Frankenstein is the cause of this. I believe it is wrong to play god. No man should try and create human beings. He has created a being that is driven to the extremes of loneliness in life. This is destroying innocent lives.
Using gothic conventions Frankenstein explores Mary Shelley’s personal views on the scientific developments, moral and economical issues that occurred during the 19th century and Shelley’s personal emotions and questions regarding her life. As an educated person, Mary Shelley had an interest in the development of the world such as political and moral issues and she challenged these issues in the novel.
When Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein is analyzed, critics comes to a conclusion about Victor Frankenstein's creation. The creature invokes the most sympathy from the readers than any other character in the novel. Because he is abandoned by society which manipulates the creature to do evil things despite his good heart. Therefore Shelley's message throughout the novel is that a person is not born evil, they are made evil.

Mary Shelley’s world renowned book, “Frankenstein”, is a narrative of how Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant chemist, succeeds in creating a living being. Although Frankenstein’s creation is benevolent to begin with, he soon turns murderous after being mistreated by humans. His anger turns towards Frankenstein, as he was the one who brought him into the world that shuns him. The Monster then spends the rest of the story trying to make his creator’s life as miserable as his own. This novel is an excellent example of the Gothic Romantic style of literature, as it features some core Gothic Romantic elements such as remote and desolate settings, a metonymy of gloom and horror, and women in distress.
He becomes obsessed with the idea of reanimation of flesh and is ultimately successful. However, the project is beyond the boundaries of what is thought possible and acceptable, and the actions taken to create the monster are unethical. In the opening scenes Frankenstein and his assistant, Fritz, are seen wandering through the graveyard taking bodies, and stealing experimental parts for their creature. In the story of Frankenstein, Viktor worked for two years on creating a life form in an inanimate body. After completing his experiment, he was highly dissatisfied with his results saying that “breathless horror and discuss filled my heart”. At this point in the story it would be ideal for Viktor to fix the imperfections of Frankenstein. However, he quickly abandons his creation after realizing that he failed to produce the vision of which he had dreamed. Frankenstein was left to learn by himself and find his way of living without the help of Viktor.
Throughout Frankenstein, one assumes that Frankenstein’s creation is the true monster. While the creation’s actions are indeed monstrous, one must also realize that his creator, Victor Frankenstein, is also a villain. His inconsiderate and selfish acts as well as his passion for science result in the death of his friend and family members and ultimately in his own demise. Throughout the novel, Shelley investigates the idea of monstrosity. She makes the point that a monster does not have to be genuinely evil in order to be considered monstrous.

At first glance, the monster in Frankenstein is a symbol of evil, whose only desire is to ruin lives. He has been called "A creature that wreaks havoc by destroying innocent lives often without remorse. He can be viewed as the antagonist, the element Victor must overcome to restore balance and tranquility to the world." But after the novel is looked at on different levels, one becomes aware that the creature wasn't responsible for his actions, and was just a victim of circumstance. One of the most important aspects of any Gothic novel is setting. Mary Shelly's Frankenstein is an innovative and disturbing work that weaves a tale of passion, misery, dread, and remorse. Some would argue that Frankenstein is a classic Gothic novel. By a classically Gothic novel it is meant that the story employs a traditionally scary theme. This could include such things as dark and dreary castles set in isolated surroundings replete with dungeons. Supernatural beings such as ghosts and living dead may be included in the twisted, thrilling, unveiling tale. The novel does contain many Gothic characteristics in a sense that it does explore the uses of dark dreary basements, where the monstrous creature is made. Frankenstein is not set in a dull and dreary basement but you could say that where Frankenstein worked on his creation to be a gloomy dreary room. There is a struggle between good and evil throughout the story, an example of this is seen in Victor Frankenstein and his monster. We also get a lot of suspense around the person who is next to be murdered or die. An example of this is before Elizabeth dies when Victor Frankenstein is anticipating his own death.
