A boy hears gunshots, he runs in the opposite directions in the fear that a bullet will eventually cross his path. He doesn’t look back but continues to run into the unknown in hopes that one day he won’t have to anymore. Both hope and fear are powerful motivators in times of crisis and no one can predict which one will come first. Hope and fear are natural instincts which drive human behavior by influencing every person’s physical, emotional, and mental state; hope and fear can have negative and positive repercussions when these instincts are not equally balanced. A balance of hope and fear is a very important thing to maintain. If there is too much of one and not enough of the other, it can lead to a disappointing life. If a human has too much hope, it can lead to a life of disappointment when things don’t pan out the right way. In the article “Hope and Mental Health” Schafer states that the Imbalanced Hope Theory can frustrate people who are unsure how to attain their goals. (Schafer) You may strive to achieve big goals, but when they are unattainable, they can be disappointed and give up on these aspirations and dreams. They can lose their drive to accomplish things in life and not complete anything. In the article “Fear” Gramlich states that there are three components of emotion and all should learn to be balanced. (Gramlich) If things can no longer be balanced, this can and will lead to an imbalance in a person’s life. On the other hand, if a human has too much fear, they will constantly be living in fear and not taking the adequate chances that should be taken. Having an excess of fear can also result in a disappointing life. In the article “Hope and Mental Health” Schafer also states that there are certain obstacles which can affect being able to balance your emotions. (Schafer) No matter how hard it is to balance, it is important to balance the emotions so there is not a huge riff in your life. Having too much of one and not enough of another is not ideal.
