Not all fathers are perfect, of course they are going to have flaws, but what would make them an ideal father figure? Most people see the ideal father to be man that is able to spend time with his children, show them love and support, both emotionally and economically. Both fathers in these short stories are very different in their parenting styles. The father from "Reunion" has money and powder but he is a rude alcoholic which is not at all a good role model for his son. On the other hand, the father from "Powder" is a kind man and is very involved with his son, but he is too much risk taker and puts his son in possible life and death situations. If I had to choose between the father in "Reunion" by John Cheever and the one in "Powder" by Tobias Wolff, I would pick the father from …show more content…

Unlike the father in "Reunion" which spends a lot of his time drinking, the father from "Powder" enjoys trying new things and going out of his comfort zone. He may not be so responsible but at least he is always ready for a new adventure. For a teenage boy like his son that is just what an ideal father would be. One that can relate with his son and be able to have fun with him. Of course, there always has to be boundaries and rules even though this father seems to have none. His wife is tired of him being so reckless, but he is experienced enough to somehow get away with his mischievous activities every time. For example, "- and in this snow he observed some quality that made it necessary for us to get in one last run. We got in several last runs." Even though in a bit of a hurry he decided to take his son to have the last bits of fun before they had to go home. Usually a stricter parent would want to be at their destination earlier than planned and would not think twice about wasting any time.
