One of the great features of each individual is the distinct personality that one has from another. Personality is a key feature because it is a characteristic that shapes how an individual may think or behave, and is not something that changes over time but stays consistent. Factor analysis is the grouping of terms with underlying similarities that is reduced to one trait. The first of the five, extraversion is how an individual reacts or behave in the social world. The two subcategories are an extrovert and introvert. Extroverts are enthusiastic people who love being around others and are action-oriented. They are also on the look-out for exciting opportunities that comes their way. While introverts are more quiet in the social world, and they tend to prefer more alone time. Though they are not depressed or arrogant, they would prefer to be in the low-key profile. Secondly, neuroticism is the experience of negative feelings such as anger, anxiety, and depression. Individual who tends to experience more emotions usually score higher while the others who score lower are less emotionally reactive. Which means they are relatively more calm in stressful situations and is emotionally more stable. Thirdly, conscientiousness is how one may control, regulate and direct impulses. For extraversion, I scored a 37, which is average. It is true, I am neither a chatterbox or reserved, because there are those days when I am enthusiastic or low-key. I scored low on activity level, which I found interesting, because I like to stay busy and active. As for neuroticism, I scored low at 25, thankfully. I was quite worried about my result of this factor, because no one wants to be described as neurotic. I would describe myself as relatively calm and composed, but there are some days I am stressed. For anxiety, self-consciousness, and vulnerability I scored an average, which would explain my stressful days. The other facets, anger, depression, and immoderation I scored low. Which is good, meaning I’m not neurotic. Thirdly, for consciousness I scored a high of 68, which I am very pleased about. For the reason that it said I have clear goals and determination, which I cannot argue with that. My agreeableness is lower than I expected of 23. I know I try to be considerate of others, but from the results, my answers to the questions resulted otherwise. At least for sympathy, cooperation, and trust I scored an average. Lastly for openness I scored a low of 4, which was alarming to me, because the number was a single digit number. The Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) is a widely used personality inventory. It has sixty questions using a Likert scale that measures five personality traits: OCEAN – openness (to experience,), conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. My overall results from the NEO-FFI were low in neuroticism, low in extraversion, high in openness, average in agreeableness, and high in conscientiousness. Likewise, my results were fairly consistent with what I had originally perceived my scores to be. Overall, I do agree with my results since there were many consistencies I recognized. A person’s personality has been the subject of psychological scrutiny for many years. Psychologists have drawn up several theories in an attempt to accurately predict and determine one’s personality. Foremost amongst these, is the “Big Five Trait Theory” which stemmed from Raymond B. Cattell’s theory.
According to the findings of the Five Factor Model of personality, I have a relatively balanced score on a number of the key traits. For example, on the continuum of extroversion versus introversion, I scored moderately high in both categories, indicating that I am comfortable being around other people and also being alone. I also scored moderate on the quality of contentiousness, indicating I am always struggling between being organized and disorganized, which is also true. I scored extremely high on agreeableness, indicating that I am basically a trusting and friendly person. In general, I believe this speaks well of my mental health. But I scored high for the trait of neuroticism, which indicates that I can be emotional and insecure (i.e., I worry a great deal). I also ranked high on the trait of openness, on seeking out new experiences and being open-minded. This indicates that I am open to new ideas and enjoy creative and novel things.
Although some would argue that their results are nowhere near correct, I would say that mine were, for the most part, spot on. I did conjure up a few disagreements; however, a more detailed and longer test might be able to give me a more in depth and accurate rating of my personality. The five-factor model includes five broad domains or dimensions of personality that are used to describe human personality. The five factors are openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. While these five traits should be sufficient on their own to describe all facets of a personality, there also should be no correlation between the main factors. The Five Factor Model is now perhaps the most widely use trait theory of personality and has achieved the closest thing to a consensus in personality research. The advantage of this theory is that there have been multiple research studies conducted on this theory. Results suggest that this theory is effective in describing and determining personality. However, this theory is very categorical and does not allow for much flexibility. It also looks at the person personality at that time and now how it developed.
