Hunington, Seal, and Hermosa Beach Piers all serve as popular multicultural leisure settings. Having personally not visited a beach in years, let alone ever been on an actual pier, my visits were new learning experiences. Although I had no prior experience on piers to compare them to, my experiences were not as different as what I had expected beach-life to entail. Since I visited these pier on the long weekend provided by Veterans day, these sites were not short of their visitors. As one of the most ethnically diverse state in the country, visitors of all ethnicities were found enjoying leisure on these beaches and piers. The population appeared to include Africans Americans, Asians, Latinos/Hispanics, and predominantly Caucasians/Whites. Various languages were spoken. I overheard some people speaking Asian languages that I could not discern. I heard plenty of Spanish, but mostly everyone spoke English. I did not notice any differences with how people of different ethnicities acted towards each other. I found everyone to be polite and open to conversation or assist in taking pictures of others. Multiracial friends and couples were seen enjoying the presence of each others. These piers serve exemplify the melting pot we live in, with visitors of all ethnicities and ages enjoying beach recreation. Beach-goers dressed in typical beach attire which included board shorts for guys and bikinis for women. Young adults made up the majority of those who were dressed less modestly. Those dressed in less clothes were more likely to participate in sports such as volleyball and football, or to simply bathe and tan in the sunlight. In line with leisure being seen as recreational activities, these piers and beaches allow for fishing, swimming, walking, nature-viewing, among other activities. The water, sun, sand all help evoke a special attitude or state of mind that allows beach piers to be associated as places where fun can be had and culture can be shared through the spread of ideas, practices, beliefs, and values. While many primarily use the piers as means to socialize and have fun, they are also renewed mentally and spiritually in the process. By enjoying nature, they are able to partake in transcendent experiences, reflection on self and others, tranquility, increased awareness and connection to others, and appreciation of the world’s beauty.
My own personal philosophy of leisure has been shaped by past and present activities I do for leisure and why I do them. To me, leisure is the sense of being free from external stressors that I face in my life such as school or work. The positive outcomes from partaking in leisure are generally overlooked and often underestimated. Leisure affects our emotions, our physical and mental health, and aids in the creation of relationships. In my own personal life, I have done and still participate in leisure as a way to sooth myself or unwind from the stress of school or work. The whole island is in the shape of a giant square with white sandy beaches full of people sunbathing, swimming and fishing right on the shoreline. From the end of the hot pavement parking lot to shore of the beach is an ocean of soft white sand. The pearlescent white sand seems to know how to invade every nook and cranny almost as if it enjoys it. Walking around the beach on the fluffy whiteness surrounding the parking lot, the seagulls are fighting over scraps of food on the ground. “Sandy beach ecosystems provide invaluable services to humankind. Their functions have been exploited through history, with significant anthropogenic effects (Lucrezi, 2015)”. This white sandy beach is a beautiful refuge from the mundane grind of everyday life. The smell of the misty ocean air mixed with the sound of seagulls hovering above and kids playing is a tonic for the mind. The feel of the sand between their toes and the waves crashing over them as people swim in the water, or the jerk of a fishing pole when someone is catching a fish makes Fred Howard Park one of the best places to relax. Standing on the beach looking out on the water, people are kayaking and windsurfing. The lifeguards watching vigilantly in their bright red shirt and shorts, blowing their whistles when they see someone being unsafe. After a long day of swimming and laying around visitors head back over the soft white sand to the showers, in order to rinse off the menacing sand that clings to everything like a bad habit. Everyone rushes over the hot pavement burning their feet to reach their cars so they can put away their beach paraphernalia which is still covered in the white sand, nearly impossible to completely leave behind, so when they get home it serves as a reminder of where they were that

By researching each culture’s common family traditions, religious beliefs, arts & entertainment, and language one can gain a greater appreciation of many different kinds of people, and in turn have more effective relationships in a multicultural society.
Entering the Courtyard Residence I had some presumptions of what we would experience with the older generations. As a result of my own experiences being part of a family composed of two different ethnic groups (white and Mexican), I have experienced many awkward moments with the older generations on my Father's side of the family who slip with racist remarks. Because of this, I had a hunch that we might encounter these moments at the Courtyard residence as well. That being said, it became an interest of mine to research the different ethnic groups who have migrated to Portland and find out what their perception of this city is. Semaphore Beach is affected by many factors such as natural processes and human impacts including marine litter and the discharge of stormwater. Therefore, several plans have been employed to ensure that the coast is supported through the method of counteracting erosion. However in the future, many management strategies have been put into consideration as well as the environmental, economic and social impacts as well as the predicted consequences. These impacts include traffic related incidents, noises and air pollution and the disruption of wildlife and the erosion of dunes. A method that should be considered for future management of the beach is the use of a concave sea wall, although efficient, this structure would be quite costly.
