Each person has their own way of seeing life and knowing what is best for them. The fact that some people know what they are doing is wrong, it is terrible. This happens in the story,” The Hitchhiking Game” by Milan Kundera. Two individuals lose all boundaries when they play new roles in the game. The game is more important than their own consciences and responsibilities. It brings forward a reality that when people fall in love, they forget about others and pay more attention to the one they are with; Nietzsche’s would urge this couple to reevaluate all values.
When the game begins, both know what is going on. The perfect example is when she starts wondering about the things he says to her. She tests him to find out if he is a liar or a cheater.

She says: “You look like you love lying to women” because she did not trust a word he said, she is beginning to realize who he truly is. In another instance, the man tries to put his arm around her, but it does not work. “You are going a bit too fast” are her words. Regarding morality, she is making the right decision, but does not want to accept it. She is attempting to seem nice because one wrong move and she can lose him. This is when everything changes for him. He believes she is a weak young woman that will do anything to please him; he is wrong. It means that the guy of the story is seeking his peak of power despite his own consciences. This is mirrored in what Nietzsche’s quotes: “The peak of rapture of the world.” Moreover, the girl in the story changes her attitude to a dominant one.
She claims, “How are you going to take care of me?” This is when he becomes aware of what she says and knows she wants to test him and see his response to such question. The man starts to see her true colors and does not like her. As Nietzsche states in one of his famous quotes, “Become what you are.” This happens to the girl because she is faking her personality. On the one hand, she is shy and on the other, she being a woman who hits on other men. She is showing who she really is as her conscious is doing to her. Love can be dangerous if one does not know how to play or whom they are dealing with. Both characters have their time to succeed in the game, but the reality is: both are aware of the situation. To an extent, his tactics as a player prove his dark side due to how he treats and judges this girl. He is wrong and loses all respect after he humiliates her and treats her like trash. Nietzsche’s is right when he claims: “Values were something created by men and women, not something inherent or something you could find.” Some people do not appreciate the women by their side, just as Nietzsche’s says. The man in the story goes too far when saying to the girl he likes, “I only kiss one woman.” From the beginning of the game, he behaves like a terrible person that does not value himself or anyone. His awareness shows that he is conscious of what he is saying to her statement, but he is choosing to act
differently. Having the chance to stop the game, he does not halt until he feels good. She tries, but cannot say, “I am me, I am me.” Meaning she is not in the game anymore. She does not know how to say it is over. In the story, values and ethical motives are not present. Values are a significant part of people, and she is lacking. As a Catholic, I have two different positions because I know that morals, dignity, respect, and values are imperative in any society and in the church. This story presents another point of view with which I agree: what both people do is wrong. If you do not desire to be played, do not play others. The characters were neither ethical nor healthy. This is a way of showing that love can be dangerous in the hands of individuals that do not know how to respond to love or jealousy with their consciences. In this story, each person is losing their way of acting, so they need to reevaluate their values to understand that what they are doing is not right.
Nietzsche thought nobility was to see one’s self as the center and origin of value. He believed that people in power force common people into bidding their will, and those in charge are separated based on good or bad measures of their value. The rulers, or people in charge have master morality, the people who do their bidding have slave morality. Slave morality is how common people make their lives more bearable by using Christian ethics such as kindness and sympathy.
“The Hitchhiker,” by Lucille Fletcher, narrates the unusual happenings Ronald Adams, the protagonist, experiences, while driving along the deserted and densely populated roads of the United States. Adams continually observes a hitchhiker, whom he first saw, having almost hit him, on the Brooklyn Bridge, and apprehends traveling on the highways, for fear this phantasmal man shall reappear. Struggling to grasp reality once receiving news of his mother’s breakdown after the death of her son, Ronald Adams, he reverts his attention to the hitchhiker, the realization of never having been who he thought he was, and being alone without protection from the traveler, both wrench his mind in two. Lucille Fletcher uses suspense to build the plot of, “The
...s did not have a lot of options. The two women in the end of the play are shown to be almost puppet like, and controlled by the will of the men around, and do not have a say in the outcome at all. The debate of love over friendship is placed back in a balance when Valentine says that they will all marry on the same day and live in the same place "Our day of marriage shall be yours, one feast, one house, one mutual happiness."
While critical of the attitude found in the ressentiment of slave morality, Nietzsche’s includes it as an important factor contributing to the bad conscience of man. Even though Nietzsche dislikes the negative results of bad conscience – man’s suppression of his instincts, hate for himself, and stagnation of his will -- Nietzsche does value it for the promise it holds. Nietzsche foresees a time coming when man conquers his inner battle and regains his “instinct of freedom.” In anticipation of that day’s eventual arrival, Nietzsche views the development of bad conscience as a necessary step in man’s transformation into the “sovereign individual.”
...the story. It gives us no insight on why the characters were put in this position and why they would even end up being together if they know there will be no happy end. I don’t think it is a movie about love, just a slice of the lives of the two as it happens during that period. Ben is an alcoholic and because of the amount he is drinking, he can not be fully aware of his actions and decisions about what is going on around him. Sera is just a prostitute that loves having control over her clients and has gone through a lot of abuse and out of desperation takes in any guy that treats her humanely. In return for Ben’s loving, Sera slips in the role of the prostitute at the end when she pours liquor over her breasts and lets Ben lick it off fulfilling his greatest fantasy. The story is very slow at times and is not suitable for every audience. For some, it may be too vulgar, for others just too boring, but I believe Figgis and both actors did remarkable jobs. The story is obviously not meant to entertain or to be the typical Hollywood romance drama, but to show Sera and Ben’s relationship leading to isolation, anxiety and self-destruction because life does not always have a happy end.
The boys call the girl’s slags, bitch and slut through out the whole play, but it's not just the name-calling, it’s the way males talk about having sex with the female characters. It is evident that all the male characters think the females are there for their own personal use. In the play, Enright display’s how male characters talk to the females. In the play, the male characters tell the women to piss off throughout the whole play. This is no way to talk to women. The males in this play are always insinuating sex; for example Scott makes a sexual remark to Shana. Shana says you know why I wear it, so when it rings, Scott cuts her off, then says so you know when I’m coming. This is just one of the instances in the play when males disrespect the females in how they talk about
Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, a German philosopher, believed there are two different moralities; master and slave morality. For Nietzsche, a morality is a set of value judgements. These moralities define a person not only by their actions, but how they handle these certain situations throughout their daily life. I believe Nietzsche chose these two moralities as they are strong opposites that are rational. The distinction between "master morality" and "slave morality" are easy to be misunderstand.
Firstly, Nietzsche stated that life is death in the making and all humans should not be determined by an external force rather, he believed that humans should have the incentive to think for themselves. Nietzsche claimed the future of a man is in his own hands. Simultaneously, humans are phased with struggles in the attempt to self-create themselves. Nietzsche proceeded with his argument affirming
Kate Chopin is very well known for her extremely unique writing. Not only are her works striking of feminism, but the way she approached topics were not easily tolerated at that time especially for her gender. Many of her stories tie into marriage and the unhappiness that it brings. In Desiree’s Baby Chopin says, “And the very spirit of Satan seemed suddenly to take hold of him…” Comparing the woman’s husband to that of Satan shows the intensity of disgust between the two in the relationship. Strong statements such as these are often seen in “The Storm” and “The Story of an Hour.” In Chopin’s life she was married, and her stories lead me to believe that she viewed her marriage as a trap and suffered from lack of privacy and control. Despite how provoking Chopin’s works were she was long ignored by readers and critics until her stories hit the surface in the 1960’s and became more popular. The women in her stories are constantly seeking freedom, lust, and attention.
In this play, the men and women characters are separated even from their first entrance onto the stage. To the intuitive reader (or playgoer), the gender differences are immediately apparent when the men walk confidently into the room and over to the heater while the women timidly creep only through the door and stand huddled together. This separation between genders becomes more apparent when the characters proceed in investigating the murder. The men focus on means while the women focus on motive: action vs. emotion. While the men...
She is willing to sacrifice an understanding lover for something that maybe a one night stand or worse. It is difficult to comprehend her decision, especially because of her extended session of “mulling” (Farley 2).... ... middle of paper ... ...
At first we see “what is in it for us”. After that, we “take this effect as the intention”. At last, we “ascribe the harboring of such intentions as a permanent quality of the person whose behavior we are observing”. Following from these steps is how we can determine whether a person is harmful, beneficial or kind (102). Nietzsche claims that our judgment is always based on how the actions of the other relate to me “What harms me is something evil (harmful in itself); what is useful to me is something good (102).” From here, Nietzsche refuses the idea that we are able to morally judge the other. Nietzsche then questions that if we assess the right actions relatively then “we ourselves must constitute the principle of the good (102).” But how can we constitute the principle of good if we are ignorant about our actions, our ego, and our neighbor. The truth is that we are deceiving ourselves and we are shaping this principle of good in a manner that suits us. From here, our principle of good is conditional, and we don’t constitute the “principle of
There were more clues to unpack than expected but once I realized the writing style of Kate Chopin I enjoyed reading each sentence to pick out the hidden meaning. Xuding Wang’s essay was helpful seeing what I could not see on my own. The point that grabbed me out of Wang’s essay was the critic, Berkove, whom as I mentioned earlier in this analysis seemed to be the same blockade to women that Chopin wrote about in 1894. To know the character in the story you must know the writer. Kate Chopin was called a rebel in her time. Her stories were a call to action by women and to go as far as Berkove did and call those ideas delusional make him seem out dated and controlling. I can only experience what I do in life. I’ll never understand challenges faced by people of other races, cultures, or sex. Reading the original story and another woman’s discussion on it was very enlightening. There were emotions described that I’ve never considered. With a critic like Berkove using language as he did in the critique against Chopin’s work it makes me curious just how far our society has come. Racism is still alive and well, religious persecution and in this story, sexism. It seems to me that the world has never really changed and will continue to bring with it the same problems as the days
Nietzsche was a man who questioned the morality of his time. He dug deep in to what good really meant, and if there was a difference between bad and evil. He sought to look at the world by stepping back and looking at it with out the predisposition of what morality was/is. He looked at what he called slave and noble morality. He looked passed what was on the surface, and gave us many things to digest and discuss. In this paper I will discuss how Nietzsche’s writing can be seen as favoritism towards the noble morality by touching on how he believes the noble morality and slave morality came about, then I will talk about his “birds of prey and lambs” example which shows his fondness of the bird of prey, and I will end with my interpretation
Nietzsche evaluates the world in terms of how it really is. He recognizes that people are inherently different and frames his philosophy accordingly. This, his philosophical paradigm is superior in terms of its realism. Furthering that argument, Nietzsche also shows that he wants to preserve societal advancement. Nietzsche was primarily concerned what society would stagnate if we settled for mediocrity. While his philosophy may be somewhat elitist, it mandates societal advancement because it allows the elites to rise to the top and push society forward. There is link to Christianity. Societies cannot push forward with this notion of God. Christianity, with its conception of transcendent, omnipotent, omniscient and a just God, denies and negates too much that is valuable in this world. There was a direct link to Christianity and how there was a real manifestation of the will to power and that certain individuals have revealed themselves. He accounts for his own ethics. Nietzsche accounts for all people in society and provides all people the equal opportunity to maximize their own power. While power differences are inevitable based upon individual differences, all people have the same opportunity to Will to Power. This creates the basis of his ethics as
