Walton grew up in a rural area in the United States. He tried lots of things such as running variety stores before founding Walmart. Walton believed that discount stores could succeed in smaller markets based on the success of many Ben Franklin stores which were located in smaller markets. From the beginning, Walmart focused on small-towns, in rural or suburban areas. In 1962, Walton started his first Walmart store in the small town of Rogers, Arkansas. The one-stop shopping convenience idea, which worked very well in the United States did not work in Germany. They preferred the daily shopping experience and perusing a variety of local stores with more specialized goods instead of the bulk shopping at Wal-Mart. In Germany, sales clerks smiling at customers was interpreted as flirting. Moreover, Walmart never built good relations with the German Labor Unions because it continued to have distain for the union ideology like it did in the United States. By learning from its defeat in Germany, Walmart has been able to make progress in its strategy to expand into the Chinese market, which also has a substantially foreign political and cultural environment. Along with its financial capability, advanced supply chain management capability, and information technology capability, Walmart adapted its business strategy to align itself with the local taste. For example, Walmart sources about 95% products locally and hires Chinese citizens to manage its stores. Due to the heavy pollution and poor safety management, Chinese customers are concerned about the quality of products made in China. Walmart developed private label brands priced 10%-40% cheaper than national brands which positively impacts Chinese customers by providing them with high quality products and low prices. Wal-Mart was conceived and founded by Sam Walton in 1962, at Rogers, Arkansas. Sam Walton started with just a few small variety stores, funded with borrowed money. His goal was to provide affordable products to the public to make life easier. After his success with the first few stores, Sam Walton borrowed more money to build more stores, creating the Wal-Mart empire as we see it today. The retail giant proves its stoic presence in our lives with its $401 billion sales for fiscal year 2009.
Born on March 29, 1918 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, Sam Walton was said to have excelled at anything he set his mind to (Walton & Huey, 14). President of the student body in high school as well as college at the University of Missouri, where he majored in business, Walton and his natural ambition gained him success in virtually all of his ventures; during the Great Depression, Walton had managed a small newspaper business, making an impressive four to five thousand dollars per year. It leaves little to wonder about how exactly Wal-Mart became such a financially successful industry.
There is a lot that goes into being a successful company, and making the Fortune 500 list is most every business owner’s dream. Sam Walton is credited with being the founder and first Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Wal-Mart. Walton and other CEO’s of the company were able to shape the success of Wal-Mart by implementing strategies that would revolutionize the way retail stores do business, all while pushing Wal-Mart to the top spot on the Fortune 500 list. The goal for my ethnographic study is subjected to the study of the people of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is a place that varies from city to city, but still attracts many of the same people. Everyone knows the weird people that wear ridiculous things to do their normal routine of shopping. That is why I have chosen to do my mini ethnography one day while shopping as an insider at the local Wal-Mart in Auburn, Alabama. Wal-Mart is a large center for shopping that attracts many different types of people, while creating an environment within itself.
At an early age of 40 Walton had already owned 15 variety stores. As discount stores started opening around towns where his stores, he saw what was in store in the retail industry. On July 2, 1962, at the age of 44, Walton opened his first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas. The competition also started that same year with Woolco, Kmart, and Target opening their doors as well. His main goal while keeping his business alive was to keep the prices as low as possible.

After a great success Sam and his wife Helen moved to Rogers, Arkansas where he opened his very first Walmart. Wal-Mart has had good reputation and competitive advantage worldwide because it has been able to embrace culture and diversity in its operations across nations. In promoting ethical culture, Wal-Mart helps its customers and stakeholders to take the right decisions and to do the right thing.

The first Wal-Mart store opened in July of 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas by Sam Walton who believed that the future of retailing was in discounting and to avoid competing with established giants like Sears and Woolworth, Wal-Mart’s stated out of the large cities in the beginning and this strategy help avoid competition, while in rural areas Wal-Mart began growing their customer base by offering ways to save money and shorter travel distance, Sam Walton felt the best way to make customers happy was to provide the low prices every day (Farhoomand, 2006). The company needed to continually find ways to control the operating costs so the savings would then be passed on to Wal-Mart customers in the form of lower prices than the competitors. Walton was opposed to having any kind of employee unions for its company and saw them as a disruption and an inconvenience (Farhoomand, 2006). The continued search for lower prices made him aware of business related travel cost, Wal-Mart executives stayed in low cost hotels when they traveled and the cost related to the services provided by suppliers, Wal-Mart helped suppliers improve operations and efficiency to produce lower cost. Walton wanted the suppliers to correct any nonessential or insufficiencies existing in their business structures as a way of gaining lower prices and higher value products for its Wal-Mart stores. To further push savings Wal-Mart forced cost down by eliminating the middleman and buying directly from the manufacturers. This cost saving also applied to executive salaries Walton felt providing employees with stock options, training opportunities, and allow employees to grow and develop would be a better way to engage and involve them in his vision (Farhoomand, 2006).
At the first, Wal-Mart only operates its business in home country. However, Wal-Mart became more integrated and independent by expanding internationally. In 1991, Wal-Mart start expands the business at international level which includes 26 countries outside of the United State such as Mexico, China and Canada. Now, Wal-Mart totally has more than 6100 stores in foreign country. The step taken by Wal-Mart is to improve and maintain their achievement outside of the home country. Wal-Mart’s strategy which expands their market at international level gains a lot of benefit to their business.
They reported that shoppers were turned off by Walmart staff hire to greet them at the door and bag their shopping. These sort of thing was then and still now unusual practice in Germany. The company also scraped the staff warm sessions scheduled at the start of every day which Garman staffs found them ridiculous. Walmart's ethical codes caused much frustration as well. Spying co-workers and repot them to management might acceptable in U.S.A but in Germany it is not the case.
Wal-mart has a reputation for caring for its customers, of course their employees, and for the prospective public. So Wal-Mart can be an industrial leader for the world of shoppers with an eye for lower affordable prices, company decision makers would continue it's systematic strategies that it's founder and president established years ago. Sam Walton believed in three guiding principles in his strategy planning they were to provide the customer with good value and service, to have a good relationship with its associates, and to be involved with the community.
