MAC cosmetics was founded in Toronto, Canada in 1985 by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo. This high end makeup was later bought by a parent company, Estée Lauder Companies. In addition to MAC cosmetics, Estée Lauder is a parent company to many other skin care and makeup brands. Makeup is a global product, which explains why MAC is sold in over 40 countries, including Australia and Africa. As a famously known cosmetic line, MAC is able to help raise money for certain foundations, but nonetheless they do a lot of harm to the world’s consumers. Constant revenue allows MAC to continue to fund their AIDS foundation. In 1994, MAC founders partnered with RuPaul to create the MAC AIDs Fund. One of the co-founders of MAC, Julie Toskan-Casale, began working with students to encourage them to volunteer for local charities. The purpose of this program is to “educates high school students about philanthropy and involves them in awarding grants” (Alberstat). By speaking about her work with the MAC AIDS Fund and her career in philanthropy, she was able to grow this program ten-fold in just a few years, reaching over 400,000 students worldwide. Julie used her skills to build up her program, Youth in Philanthropy Initiative, from working with “a single high school in Toronto, [to including] about 400 schools” (Alberstat). The company, owned by Estée Lauder, must follow its parent companies regulations. According to an article posted on the website, OneGreenPlanet, “in 2012, Estée Lauder resumed animal testing, after claiming to have sworn off the practice, to meet testing requirements in Chinese markets”(Ryan). Letting animals be harmed just for one certain countries regulations is a bad decision as a company. In addition to testing on animals, MAC cosmetics still claims to be cruelty free, even though the they are still on PETA’s “blacklist” of companies.
