As a Shakespearean hero, Hamlet must accept the control of a Higher Power, especially when it comes to his own death. Throughout the play Hamlet expresses a changing attitude towards death in several soliloquies that he performs. Hamlet goes from a confused soul in despair to a noble and faithful man.
At the beginning of the play, Hamlet is discouraged with his life because his mother remarried his uncle soon after his father’s death. According to Simon Critchley in the New York Times, Hamlet in the beginning of the play “is a creature of endless vacillation, a cipher for the alienated, inward modern self in a world that is insubstantial and rotten.” In the eyes of his friends and family he is melancholic and people can not quite understand why he is depressed. In Hamlet’s first soliloquy about death Act I, Scene II l.130-159 he expresses his first thoughts on suicide. He is “an outraged man who, disgusted by his ‘sullied flesh’, can see no outcome to his disgust other than death” (Delville, Michel). Hamlet appears to be more melancholic, and desperate than at any other point in the play. Desiring his flesh to “melt,” and wishing that God had not made “self-slaughter” a sin, saying that the world is “weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable.” Hamlet thinks suicide seems like a desirable alternative to life in a painful world, but he feels that taking his own life is not an option because religion forbids suicide. According to Michel Delville, “ God, the Everlasting, he tells us, does not allow one to act in this way. God still rules the universe and Hamlet must obey his strictures. For much of the play Hamlet appears to be overwhelmed with grief and self-pity, and consumed with hesitation towards the role of being a hero and killing his uncle. Because of this Hamlet continues to delay his revenge on his uncle who deserves to die. In whatever way, to whatever extent throughout thinking, actions and situations Hamlet recognizes the conflicts within himself. This leads to a gradual change in his demeanor, which concludes with this final exchange with Horatio and the long awaited murder of Claudius.
One single moment or event during the course of an individual’s life can effectively alter their priorities and transform their identity drastically. In The play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare introduces the readers to the protagonist Hamlet who is draped in anger and emotions and has a new-found mission in life. Initially, Hamlet is portrayed as an individual in mourning over his father's death and his mother's haste in remarrying to her brother-in-law and Hamlet's uncle, Claudius. However, Hamlet’s character and personality were drastically altered after meeting the Ghost and discovering the true nature of his Father’s death. Hamlet is now a man with a lust for revenge and a willingness to do anything that will enable him to accomplish this goal. When burdened with the task of killing Claudius, Hamlet chooses to sacrifice all he holds dear by transforming his identity in a noble effort to avenge his father’s death.
To begin with, Hamlet starts off his speech asking, “Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer/ The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune/ Or to take arms against a sea of troubles/ And by opposing end them” (Shakespeare 3.1.57-60). He wonders if he would be more noble if he took his own life and end his sorrows than if he continued to endure him. This question shows the pain and grief that Hamlet has experienced since the death of his father. According to Ophelia, later in Act 3 Scene 1, she reveals that Hamlet was once the obvious successor to the throne since he was charismatic and admired by the people. Clearly, in this part of the play, he is suicidal, and he is uncertain about many of the big decisions in his life. This extreme change in Hamlet’s behaviors makes the audience worry about Hamlet’s mental health. Is his feigned madness transforming into true insanity? However, his comparison to death and sleep suggests that Hamlet is in a state of reflection and learning. Hamlet’s analogy between death and sleep is the musings of an ordinary man who wonders what happens to a soul once its body dies. Just as no one knows what dreams they will experience when they lay in bed, no knows what they will experience when their body is finally laid in a grave.
From past experiences in ones life, whether it be the death of a long aged gold fish to a deceased elder, one knows the pain and suffering that goes on afterwards. Hamlet is Shakespeare’s most famous work of tragedy. Throughout the play the title character, Hamlet, tends to seek revenge for his father’s death. Shakespeare achieved his work in Hamlet through his brilliant depiction of the hero’s struggle with two opposing forces that hunt Hamlet throughout the play: moral integrity and the need to avenge his father’s murder. When Hamlet sets his mind to revenge his fathers’ death, he is faced with many challenges that delay him from committing murder to his uncle Claudius, who killed Hamlets’ father, the former king. During this delay, he harms others with his actions by acting irrationally, threatening Gertrude, his mother, and by killing Polonius which led into the madness and death of Ophelia. Hamlet ends up deceiving everyone around him, and also himself, by putting on a mask of insanity. In spite of the fact that Hamlet attempts to act morally in order to kill his uncle, he delays his revenge of his fathers’ death, harming others by his irritating actions. Hamlet’s anger and grief- primarily stemming from his mother’s marriage to Claudius- brings him to thoughts of suicide, which only subside as a result of it being a mortal and religious sin. The fact that he wants to take his own life demonstrates a weakness in his character; a sense of cowarness, his decision not to kill himself because of religious beliefs shows that this weakness is balanced with some sense of morality. Such an obvious paradox is only one example of the inner conflict and turmoil that will eventually lead to Hamlet’s downfall.
