The Haudenosaunee are referred to today by people as the Iroquois Confederacy. The confederacy consisted of five Native American tribes all sharing a common culture of the haundenosaunee. These five tribes called themselves the haundenosaunee, translated to mean “people of the longhouse.” All five tribes are based in now what is present day New York. The Haundenosaunee have a culture that is influenced by a variety of aspects. The Onondaga, Cayuga, Oneida, Mohawk, and Seneca were the five tribes that joined together to make the large group known as the haudenosaunee’s. The backgrounds of these tribes state that a Huron Indian on a spiritual quest joined all of these five tribes together. He caused them all to believe in sacred rituals that …show more content…
Not only did the haudenosaunee hunt and gather, but they planted crops as well. The men of the tribes hunted mostly animals such a dear and would fish for their food as well. Their knowledge in agriculture lead to them being able to produce in mass amounts what they called the “three sisters.” Squash, beans and corn were what they referring to as these sisters. These three foods were often put with another food or made into a different substance. For example, the corn was often grounded. Being able to have a large supply of food allowed them to make it through when there was not a lot of food being produced or hunted. Gathering was also big among the five tribes. Women often would go into the forest in search of things like berries and nuts. All of the foods whether they hunted, planted, or gathered were often combined with one another to make a variety of different dishes. Succotash was a well-known meal, “a stew type meal combining green unripe corn which is scraped from the cob into the pot and combined with unripe beans which had nearly been cooked (Grand River).” To eat these foods, majority of the people used their hands as their utensils and used bowls to contain the food (Grand
Aboriginals influenced classical Liberalism to some extent due to other numerous factors that are contributed in influencing classical Liberalism. Various opposing tribes occupied similar grounds in North America, consequently caused disputes which subsequently led to fighting. Due to the constant fights that were occurring, men were dying from each tribe and as a result a solution was needed to be established. Therefore, decided on unifying the five tribes in order to create one tribe termed the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee.) This enabled there to peace and ultimately a more unified tribe, drastically limiting on their disputes by resolving them democratically. Additionally, Iroquois women were perceived as equal to their counterparts, therefore

During the early beginnings of the Colonial period in the United States, the original inhabitants, the Native Americans had to deal with many invaders from Europe. Of all the Native American tribes, the Iroquois and Huron had the most interaction with the Europeans. The Spanish, English, and French were some of the few countries that worked with the Native Americans the most. Each country had their own methods of dealing with the Native Americans when it came to interaction or methods for trading and obtaining of goods. Of those three nations the French was the one nation that appeared to not take full advantage of the Huron and Iroquois.
1.Iroquois Confederacy— confederation of five indigenous North American peoples, or nations, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca; founded c.1570.
His name is Wautheeweela. It means Bright Horn, referring to horns on a deer. He is ten years old, and ready to make his journey to prove his manhood. He and other boys from his Shawnee tribe have been physically toughened and taught to be independent since an age of around six. In winters, they have had to break the ice to jump into the freezing river to continue their daily routine of learning to survive with Nature and its elements. Now will be his test of endurance. He is sent into the woods with a bow and arrow and told not to come back until he had shot something to eat. His face is blackened with charcoal, a sign to all who saw him that he is on his quest and cannot be helped. He would not end up like his friend, Little Wildcat Alford, who went two days alone in the woods without food, and became to weak too shoot, but did manage to kill a quail and return as a man (Wallace, 1970). Bright Horn was better then that, mentally and physically, and has waited for this day to come. Face blackened and weapon in hand, he heads out of his tribe's settlement. He must be smart. He walks along the creek with many bends, the Conodoguinet, until the sun reaches the land. Now he rests on the bank, throwing pebbles into the creek, watching little fish swim around with no apparent direction what so ever. He waits until nightfall to move inland a little bit, to scout out a spot where animals might come to the creek. He sets himself up against a tree and falls asleep. He awakes with a crackling of a twig. A full moon is shining, creating many eerie shadows on the ground. He waits patiently to see what is approaching. He sees a reflection of an eye, a greenish glow coming from it. It is deer comin...
The Iroquois tribe was part of an alliance with five other tribes throughout New York that banded together against enemies, talked about land, and traded with each other. These peaceful people operated in a democracy, one of the first seen in the early world. Much is known about these tribes due to the missionaries which were sent out in the 1600’s. The Jesuits, an order of the Catholic Church devoted to teaching, spent the time to move out into the unknown world, live with these people, and teach them the ways of Catholicism. In doing this, they documented everything they saw and provided accurate accounts of the building of these structures.
According to tribal legend, “when the life force of the universe first called into earth, the ancient forebears of the Quapaw people were adrift in the froth of the sea. In time, they say, the breath of the sky set them ashore on the glistening coast.” Tradition, as well as historical and archeological evidence says that these tribes of people were wandering the Ohio Valley well before the 15th century. The Quapaw Tribe of Indians, also known as the O-Gah-Pah, or several other translations of the word which in general terms means “downstream people” or the “ones from downstream”, along with their Dhegiha Sioux kinsmen (the Osage, Ponca, Kansa, and Omaha) attained a cultural level of excellence that was only surpassed by the tribes in central Mexico and Peru. The Quapaw Tribe of Indians, history, culture, values, strength, and perseverance have allowed them to stay united as a tribe and sets them apart from other Indian tribes, although they deserve a better fate (Baird “The Quapaw People” 2).
Have you ever heard of the Powhatan tribe? If not, let me share a little fact about them. Powhatan means “waterfall” in the Virginia Algonquian language. The Powhatans didn't live in tepees. They lived in small roundhouses called wigwams, or in larger Iroquois-style longhouses.
The Algonquians on the other hand had tried to take over the Iroquoian territory. The Iroquois had fought and won a battle with the Algonquians for the territory they had lost for 20 years. Other than these two main groups, the Iroquois people were well rounded. All of the many families in a clan, many clans in a tribe, and many tribes make what is known as the one Iroquois Confederacy. Some of the famous people who were a big part of the Iroquoian culture were Deganawida and Hiawatha. Deganawida along with Hiawatha were the two founders of the Iroquoian Confederacy. They both organized a few of the Native American tribes and made it into a political and cultural confederacy. Another famous Iroquoian person is Dina A. John, who was a resident of the Onondaga tribe and survived the Van Shaik Expedition. She had also served in the War of 1812 and became an artist and entrepreneur in New York. These famous people are representing for what the Iroquois Confederacy has become. Contrary to what many historians believed, based on the narratives of this essay one would unequivocally conclude that indeed Native-Americans were never impoverish nor culturally
The Iroquois includes many Indian tribes speaking a language of the Iroquoian family, such as the Huron, Mohawk, Onondaga, and Seneca among others. However, the Huron is often spoken of separately. The Iroquois differs from the Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the Iroquois League. All of them were affected by the arrival and colonization by Europeans. While Iroquois have a reputation of being violent, they were at times peaceful and were employed by different European companies; they also spread their culture and some European ideas with them. The Iroquois League has been said to have influenced the Founding Fathers, but is that true? Another question is whether the Iroquois were cannibals. They believed in witchcraft, but witchcraft

At first, the Algonquian Region was an oasis for its Native American’s who inhabited the land. Thousands upon thousands of Mohegan Indians, Agawam Indians, Chappaquiddick Indians, Pequot Indians, and even the Naragansett neighbored and collectively made up the Wampanog Indians. Each one of these subtribes spoke a different dialect; however, they were all mutually intelligible (We Shall Remain, Episode 1). All the tribes, or subtribes, shared and traded with one another. They established order for marriages; they had their own political beliefs and issues. They all dwelled near the Atlantic Ocean and were known as a “community of communities” (We Shall Remain, Episode 1).
The Haudenosaunee, “people of the longhouse,” are a group of six American Indian nations located in New York State. These nations, the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Tuscarora, and Seneca, face many challenges in maintaining their culture and traditional ways. However, they have been able to preserve many aspects and traditions through music and dance, arts and crafts, and sport.
They believed that the Great Spirit of Tarachiawagon, which means “Holder of the Heavens”, cared for his people and asked that they cared for each other. Their religion also contributed to their deep sense in brotherhood. Leaders were respected but also equal to the lowest of members. As further results of the love and respect was shown through their lack of crime. The Iroquois did not have a police nor needed one. Their code of honor was seldom broke because citizen’s feared public disapproval. Only two crimes were named, which was theft and murder.
The first one is the a ni go lo hi, the long hair clan, which are known to be very peaceful. This clan is very distinct from the others because it involves the prisoners of war, orphans of other tribes and completely strangers with no Cherokee tribe. In times of war, the Peace chief comes from the long hair clan. The Second clan is the oldest clan in the Cherokee, a ni sa ho ni, which are the Blue clan . They are the people who make and provide medicine for the children. The third clan are the warriors of the tribe, the a ni wa ya. Also called the Wolf, the protectors of the tribe, were the War Chief is selected. The fourth clan is the a ni go te ge wi, the wild potato clan, which means they were the farmers and gathered of the tribe. They took care of gathering the wild potato, which was the main crop in the east at that time. The fifth clan is the a ni a wi, the Deer clan, who were in charge of the hunting and gathering of the animals. They took care of the animals when they were around them. The ability to run and hunt made the members of this clan perfect to be the messengers between villages. The sixth clan is the a ni tsi s qua, which are the Bird clan in charge of the birds since they believe they are the messengers between earth and the heavens. Lastly, The seventh clan is the a ni wo di, the Paint clan, who are the prominent medicine people. The
