The Hate U Give, directed by George Tillman Jr. was released in 2018. This emotional movie shows us the events in the life of Starr Carter, played by Amandla Stenberg, as she uses her voice to battle through adversity and systemic racism in America. The movie is based off of the 2017 novel written by Angie Thomas under the same title. I enjoyed both the novel and the film adaptation because of the captivating story it takes you through. Despite some of the differences in the movie, the core, the theme, and main message of the story remains the same. As stated the film revolves around the protagonist Starr Carter, as she deals with the death of close friend Khalil Harris. Khalil was killed by a police officer during a traffic stop, which led to the officer unlawfully shooting and killing Khalil. The majority of the story takes place in a fictitious neighbourhood called Garden Heights in the …show more content…
In the novel, Starr meets a character by the name of Davante, who is very important because he connects a lot of plot points together. Davante was a member of the King Lords gang and sold drugs for them, Khalil also sold drugs for the King Lords. Another difference that is in the novel but left out in the film is a section in which the head of the King Lords, King, lays a gray bandana on Khalil’s casket signifying that he was a King Lord. However, in a later part of the book, Starr has a conversation with Davante in which he reveals that Khalil only sold the drugs for money and was never a member of the King Lords; he actually turned down the offer to join them. Without the inclusion of the character Davante, Starr never gets the closure that Khalil wasn’t a gang member. This change is pretty significant as it leaves out a whole other part of the story involving Khalil, Davante, King, the gangs and their connections to other characters such as Big
Have you ever read a book and watched its movie and thought that the movie was nothing like the book? The Giver’s story was not adapted well onto the big screen. There were many changes that were made, some of which completely altered the whole course of the storyline. For example, Fiona working at the Nurturing Center instead the House of the Old and the characters taking injections instead of pills also changed the way Jonas acted especially towards Fiona throughout the entire movie Some of the many trivial changes that were made did not affect the movie as much.
Lois Lowry’s book “The Giver” is about a community that has no flaws and everything is very controlled. They have no good or bad memories they just live their lives doing the jobs they were assigned. One day, Jonas, the new receiver, had an idea to release the memories back into the community. The story was later turned into a film and had some similarities, but the director of the movie departed from Lowry’s original story in a number of ways. By examining the different tones and the changes in a few of the characters, it's clear that the film departs from the story.
The Hate U Give was written by Angie Thomas in 2017, and was written based on a true story. This book is very powerful, because it shows events that are happening in today’s time. It starts off with a girl, who goes to a prep high school, but lives in the ghetto. The girl, known as Starr, is a very nice and smart girl that doesn’t get in trouble and stays out of trouble. Starr also has limited control over whether justice will be served for Khalil, the protagonist. The police's decision not to press charges against One-Fifteen highlights the many instances of injustice throughout the story, and it's crucial to note that Starr cannot be personally responsible for all of them. In chapter 22, Starr gives a speech where she says, "Everybody wants to talk about how Khalil died, but this isn't about how Khalil died. It's about the fact that he lives. His life mattered.
Our other main character is Barry Johnson who is senior detective at the station. Starr does not know of Johnson. Johnson’s front is a cage cleaner at The Bronx Zoo. Johnson is keeping an eye on Starr because Johnson works on the side with Martinez; Johnson is betraying the department. Johnson moved next door to Starr and he pretends to be mentally challenged and in love with Starr. He watches her nightly at the club, yet she only notices him around the elevator—here or there. She has never seen him at the department or at the club.

Introduction "The Hate U Give" follows Starr Carter, a 16-year-old navigating the difficulties of her two worlds: her primarily black, low-income neighborhood of Garden Heights and her wealthy, predominantly white private school. Star's life takes a dark turn when she witnesses a white police officer fatally shooting her childhood friend, Khalil, during a traffic stop. As the only witness to the shooting, Starr faces enormous pressure from both the gang in her community as well as the authorities to stay silent. However, inspired by her activist father, Maverick, and motivated by her commitment to justice, Starr decides to speak out against the injustice. Her choice to testify sparked a wave of protests, and challenged her relationships with family, friends, and peers.
Kenya, who Starr shares a brother with, finds fault with Starr’s silence, and recognizes how that is tied to the shame of being associated with a drug dealer. Eventually, Starr speaks out for Khalil, which lets go of that shame and acknowledges
Starr also references her neighborhood, Garden Heights, as a “Warzone”(Starr 140) amongst the protest and violence from people who demanded justice for Khalil. Through rap lyrics, she articulates her frustrations, fears, and hopes, allowing her to reclaim her voice and assert her identity, we see this as one of the main coping mechanisms to get through everything going with mourning the very unexpected loss of Khalil, Starr hears a reference from her brother Chris when he was singing a Fresh Princess Song, a Fresh Princess quote, who is a hip-hop artist in the industry with “Fresh Princess says you gotta dream like you've never seen obstacles” (Starr 62) when she
The book and movie ,“The Giver”, have many similarities and differences. It is about a community where everyone is the same. The main character, Jonas, got picked to be the receiver at the ceremony of Twelves. Jonas is a very brave young man, and very respectful. He tries to help everyone as much as he can, especially Fiona, whenever they needed it. The Giver gives Jonas a lot of memories. Jonas had his first memory, that he was going down the sled. He can't stand the memories anymore, so that caused him to risk his life by running away from the community and leave his memories there. The book and movie “The Giver” have many differences in imagery, plot, and characterization.
Thomas skillfully employs the writing techniques of a first person perspective and flashbacks to ultimatelty convey the divide between protagonist Starr’s private school life and home in a crime-ridden ghetto. While at a party in the slums, Starr meets her old friend Kahlil and begins to catch up with him. Starr quickly becomes upset as she realizes Kahlil has became a selfish and manipulative individual with multiple girlfriends. This causes Starr to reflect on her past relationship with Kahlil and current one with her boyfriend: “But the way Kahlil looks at me with those hazel eyes makes it hard to be upset (that he has many girlfriends). I feel like I’m ten again, standing in the basement of Christ Temple Church, having my first kiss with him at Vacation Bible School.
The Book Thief is a novel and a film that takes place in Germany. The majority of the story is based through the years of 1939-1943. In the book, the main character, Liesel Meminger, is a 9 year old girl with her foster family the hubermanns. After seeing the hit book blow up, they decided to make a movie. The Movie and the book, even though having their similarities, weren't exactly hand on hand in everything. . Some of these differences are minor, some being major. The Movie and the book were different through Setting, Character, and mood.
The Book thief tells the story of a young German girl named Liesel. Liesel sees her brother die in front of her and end up getting adopted by Hans and Rosa Hubermann. While struggling to deal with the lost of her brother, the reality of Nazi Germany and trying to hide a jewish man in her basement, she finds comfort in stealing books and sharing them with others. The Book Thief book by Markus Zusak is better than the Book Thief movie directed by Brian Percival. The narrative character poorly uses the narrator Death. The details the removed took away from the effectiveness of the plot. The set designed was unrealistic and poorly designed.
