People will never know a person’s true self unless they use their imagination. In “The handsomest drowned man in the world” “(TDM)” and “A very old man with enormous wings” “(OMW)” Gabriel Garcia Marquez, shows this throughout his story. He shows how people can open themselves to others and the other people can be closed off to one another. In “TDM” the villagers cleaned him off and made clothing for him and gave him a name and a family even when he was dead and in the “OMW” they put him in a chicken coop and let him get hit with stones and burnt with an iron for branding steers. Some of the women went and got flowers in neighboring villages and came back with more people for his funeral. When it was time for them to return him to the waters, they made sure he had a mother, father, siblings, and cousins. “[..] to hold the most splendid funeral, [..] some women [went to get] flowers [...] at the final moment it pained them to return him to the final waters as an orphan and they chose a father and a mother [.....]” Estaban made such a strong impact on the citizens of the village, that they named their village, Estaban’s village. After everybody had left in “OMW” from seeing the angel they have him time to rest. His feathers were able to grow back and he was able to fly again. Later, Elisenda felt a strong wind come through the kitchen window and saw the angels first attempt to fly. He couldn’t get a strong flutter and then he gained altitude and was able to fly away. When Elisenda saw him fly away she let out a sigh of relief. “[..] she went to the window and caught the angel in his first attempts at flight [...] he managed to gain altitude, Elisenda let out a sigh of relief, for herself and for him [...]” Elisenda has always thought of him as a burden and only kept him for the money he was bringing in and once he left she felt a lift off of her
