People will never know a person’s true self unless they use their imagination. In “The handsomest drowned man in the world” “(TDM)” and “A very old man with enormous wings” “(OMW)” Gabriel Garcia Marquez, shows this throughout his story. He shows how people can open themselves to others and the other people can be closed off to one another. In “TDM” the villagers cleaned him off and made clothing for him and gave him a name and a family even when he was dead and in the “OMW” they put him in a chicken coop and let him get hit with stones and burnt with an iron for branding steers. Some of the women went and got flowers in neighboring villages and came back with more people for his funeral. When it was time for them to return him to the waters, they made sure he had a mother, father, siblings, and cousins. “[..] to hold the most splendid funeral, [..] some women [went to get] flowers [...] at the final moment it pained them to return him to the final waters as an orphan and they chose a father and a mother [.....]” Estaban made such a strong impact on the citizens of the village, that they named their village, Estaban’s village. After everybody had left in “OMW” from seeing the angel they have him time to rest. His feathers were able to grow back and he was able to fly again. Later, Elisenda felt a strong wind come through the kitchen window and saw the angels first attempt to fly. He couldn’t get a strong flutter and then he gained altitude and was able to fly away. When Elisenda saw him fly away she let out a sigh of relief. “[..] she went to the window and caught the angel in his first attempts at flight [...] he managed to gain altitude, Elisenda let out a sigh of relief, for herself and for him [...]” Elisenda has always thought of him as a burden and only kept him for the money he was bringing in and once he left she felt a lift off of her
In 1949, Dana Gioia reflected on the significance of Gabriel García Márquez’s narrative style when he accurately quoted, “[it] describes the matter-of-fact combination of the fantastic and everyday in Latin American literature” (Gioia). Today, García Márquez’s work is synonymous with magical realism. In “Un Señor Muy Viejo con Alas Enormes,” the tale begins with be dramatically bleak fairytale introduction:
In the South American storytelling tradition it is said that humans are possessed of a hearing that goes beyond the ordinary. This special form is the soul’s way of paying attention and learning. The story makers or cantadoras of old spun tales of mystery and symbolism in order to wake the sleeping soul. They wished to cause it to prick up its ears and listen to the wisdom contained within the telling. These ancient methods evolved naturally into the writings of contemporary Latin American authors. The blending of fantasy with reality to evoke a mood or emphasize elements of importance became known as magical realism, and was employed to great effect by Latin authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez in his novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and Rudolfo Anaya, in his work, Bless Me Ultima.
When the angel comes, the very wise old woman tells them that he must be here to take their child, but they don’t listen to her intelligent advice. “Against the judgment of the wise neighbor woman, for whom angels in those times were the fugitive survivors of spiritual conspiracy, they did not have the heart to club him to death. Pelayo watched over him all afternoon from the kitchen, armed with his bailiff’s club, and before going to bed he dragged him out of the mud and locked him up with the hens in the “wire chicken coop”. Pelayo defies nature by not letting the Angel go, and hence the Angel is locked up “as if he weren’t a supernatural creature but a circus animal”. At the end of the story, the wife watches the angel fly away and realizes that now he is no longer an annoyance in her life.

He wants to free himself from the constant hunger and instability because he wants his son to have a life without those hardships. The air, the bird, and Little Guy are sources of beauty and hope for Guy. Guy believes God gave the world hope as motivation to reach freedom.
Style: The typical Magical- Realistic story of García Márquez placed in a familiar environment where supernatural things take place as if they were everyday occurrences. Main use of long and simple sentences with quite a lot of detail. "There were only a few faded hairs left on his bald skull and very few teeth in his mouth, and his pitiful condition of a drenched great-grandfather took away and sense of grandeur he might have had" (589).

These themes focusing on human nature become a whole lot more significant when you hold them up next to the angel. The humans did not care quite enough for the angel which can be clearly seen when noticing how they took advantage of him by exploiting him for the opportunity that arouse due to their desire for wealth. The family used him to satisfy their curiosity while also treating him like a common house pet. All of these factors are a testament to the many short comings of the human race even when they are graced with something that only a short period of time ago they could not have even imagined and that would have continued to have exists apart from their interference.

Throughout Marquez’s late teen years, Colombia was plagued by social and economic problems. In 1946, Colombia’s problems grew into a violent rebellion that lasted for ten long years. “The violent war was named La Violencia or The Violence; it became the most bloodshed period in Colombia” (Bailey 4). Marquez’s choice of magic realism made it possible for him to place hidden messages in the story by creating a deeper connection to his readers. The intricate characters and scenes Marquez portrays in the story all have a significant relation on his emotions, his life, and his country during the tragic years of La Violencia.
"The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World Summary" is a short story written by Gabriel Marquez based in a small fishing village somewhere in Latin America. This is a mystical, mythological story that pulls you into the fact of how one man could change a whole village. In this village you had your dull women and you had the sailors who main objective was just fishing. For a while they were content in the monotony of their lives until a mystical larger than life man floated on shore, who throughout the story transforms this village from a dull gray simple village, to a vibrant and bright village that ships of the sea can see from far away this village be known as "Esteban's Village". Initially it seems that Esteban is the cause of the transformation, but in actuality the villagers are responsible themselves for the changes they made.
In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” the angel appears seemingly out of nowhere and changes Pelayo and Elisenda’s life for the better. Despite being treated as no more than a pet, he provides them with enough money to build a luxurious house, Each member hides behind a different excuse to avoid doing any work. However, once Gregor was taken away from them, they were given the push they needed to stop making excuses and provide for themselves. Mr. Samsa went from a man who “could not be expected to do much” to a bank messenger, Mrs. Samsa changed from a woman who had no expectations in her life because of her asthma to a successful seamstress, and Grete’s life transformed from days spent “dressing herself nicely, sleeping long, helping in the housekeeping, going out to a few entertainments and above all playing the violin” to devoting herself to be a salesgirl, even spending her evenings practicing her shorthand and French to improve (482). These jobs were not just a way for them to make ends meet, but were “admirable and likely to lead to better things later on” (499-500).
The angel makes many mistakes with his miracles. However, the family that houses him, though they treat him as inferior, does have a turn of fate because of his existence. The angel brings them wealth when they charge admission to view him. For this family of three, life takes a better turn after giving the old man a chicken coop in which to sleep.
In Marquez's story, an exotic drowned giant was found on the beach next to a poor, small village, but soon accepted into their homes and loved by the people with respect and pride. Since the village men had no knowledge to anything beyond their small area of nearby villages, their horizons were extremely narrow and had never seen such a beautiful man before, so he was treated as God and even gave him identity and buried him in the nicest way they could offer. Because of the large drowned man, the village men had realized the ugliness of their own society and how simple and plain lives they lived. The drowned man here brought inspiration and change to the village with no ambition, no dreams and no knowledge about the outside world-and motivated them, bringing 'colour' to their lives and making them realize how simple, plain and uncivilized they lived and gave them faith and hope and inspiration to a brighter future and a way to civilize themselves and their society.
