Have you ever wanted to live the “American Dream” or wondered what is it all about? Well the “American Dream” is something some Americans actually try to pursue. In my opinion it’s an encouragement to Americans that help them realize they can be whatever they want to be with hard work. Most people’s concept of the American Dream is different. Some may say the American Dream is lived by, being a hard worker, being persistent & striving to complete goals. But this Dream began to change over the years. Many people changed their priorities & perception of certain things. In the novel The Great Gatsby many of the characters strive to live an American Dream that affects them in certain ways. Jay is a very rich man with many material possessions. Even though he may be rich Jay is striving to complete a different goal because he isn’t a materialistic man. All Jay wants in life is to regain the love of Daisy. Daisy is a woman Jay was in love with at a younger age. But she got older and became a part of a higher social class.SO Jay felt that if he was wealthy it might help him regain her love. That’s why he worked so hard. So Jay took extreme measures just to regain her love, this was his “American Dream.” This pursuit of his dream would result in him losing his life. In conclusion, Jays’ American Dream caused him to do foolish things that resulted in his life ending. So therefore, in the end Jay was striving for love that he would never regain, instead of trying to strive for a successful life overall.
Tom Buchanan is a man without an “American Dream.” Tom is a wealthy man who didn’t have to work hard for what he had because it was handed to him. Tom would later on become a snob & careless man because of how rich he is. He sort of let him being rich get to his head. Tom was also responsible for the death of Jay Gatsby. Tom never knew how it felt to have to work for something because everything he wanted was always handed to him the result of Tom not having a Dream made his life full of corruption and lack of
