The author Scott F. Fitzgerald appears to be focusing his efforts on justifying a central theme-that is the American dream. He takes advantage of using the different literary arts-one being the use of symbols-to serve in the purpose of enhancing and promoting the central theme. The American dream, which is the central theme being supported by symbols, reflects the American society’s beliefs in the early 1920’s. Americans had an optimistic attitude and view on following the path to their dreams and reaching their goals. They seemed to ignore the social issues people were facing, including racism, sexism, xenophobia, taxes, and income. The first major symbol used in The Great Gatsby appears first at the very end of chapter one, it’s none other than the green light at the end of Daisy's dock. It seems to be mysterious and hard to reach, as Gatsby seemed to be trying hard to reach out for it (1.151-152) Later in chapter 5, Gatsby mentions the green light to Daisy (5.117-118) and this shows us how Daisy is connected to Gatsby’s American dream and how she’s a big part of the dream he’s reaching out for and the life he’s striving for, but Gatsby having mentioned the green light in front of Daisy shows that he still didn’t get a hold of his American dream, because he doesn’t seem to be satisfied with how she appears to be physically present with him but she’s still out of reach and deep down, he knows she still isn’t his. The green light is mentioned last in the final chapter, which is chapter 9, (9.152-154) and by mentioning the green light at the very end of the book, Fitzgerald yet again shows us Gatsby’s purpose in life and that the American dream, Daisy being a huge part of, is what kept Gatsby going, kept him motivated and it’s basically what he lived by and believed in.
