According to Kevin Spacy, "People have different reasons for the way they live their lives. You cannot put everyone's reasons in the same box." This is the only way I can describe my Grandpa, Raymond's way of life. He did not have the same privileges' as others did during his life, and he had to work for himself and provide a good life for his family, no matter what it took to do that. My grandfather, Raymond Hause, lived a life filled with hardship and happiness between the years of 1932 and 2004. He was a child during the Great Depression and World War II, his life from there was filled with war and hardships as he lived the life of a poor immigrant. Children during the Great Depression had it rough. They had to mature sooner due to the …show more content…
Suicide rates were at an all time high, rising to 17 suicides per every 100,00 people (Psychological Impact of the Great Depression). The Great Depression had strong impacts on the lives of people as well, causing a huge need for social adaptation. There were many disputes during the Great Depression; families lost finances, food, and many other basic needs. This caused stress among families. It was shown that domestic abuse and child abuse had increased during these hard times; this fact was argued by professional historian Harvey Green (Psychological Impact of the Great Depression). The way parents handled the Great Depression impinged on their children, if a parent got depressed and sanctioned himself or herself away from society then it was likely a child would do the same or act out in hopes of gaining attention. Most children did not have time to be children, most children of the Great Depression had to work at home, (that is if they had a home), while if they did not have a home they were forced …show more content…
Finally, being able to get out of the economic depression that was the Wall Street Crash of 1929, we came together more as a nation. The United States went to war with the Axis powers, which included Germany, Italy, Japan, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania. This war front was mainly caused by German dictator, Adolf Hitler, who led the Axis powers along with Mussolini, Italian Dictator, and the, then, Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo. Hitler was an extreme dictator who believed and attempted mass genocide, he had an army referred to as Nazis who would kidnap Jewish families and bring them to concentration camps to die. On September 1, 1939, 1.5 million German troops invaded Poland; this was the beginning of World War II. Poland was soon over run by the German Blitzkreig by September 20. The German army was dominate in the beginning World War II as they had strong technologies and armed forces. During the spring of 1940, Germany took hold of Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands', and in June, France was taken as well. During the 1940's the U.S.'s relationship with Japan was unstable since the U.S. prohibited the trade and exportation of steel, scrap iron, and aviation gasoline to Japan when Japan's troops entered northern Indochina. Nothing but trouble would ensue after the U.S.'s prohibition of exportation with Japan. On December 7, 1941, Japan bombed an American naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Days
They way people interacted with others changed in the Great Depression. One of the main changes is the way the family was run. During the glutted 1920s, the father is the support of the family while the mother do the housekeeping. When the great depression struck, the men lost their jobs. They can no longer support their families. Because of self pride, many fathers left their families and never came back because felt that they lost their purpose in the
The Battle of Pearl Harbor was one of the most atrocious events that happened in U.S. history. On December 7, 1941, Japan made a surprise aerial attack on the United States naval base and airfields at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. More than two thousand Americans died and a thousand two hundred were wounded. Eighteen ships were badly damaged, including five battleships. The next day, President Franklin Roosevelt with the support of the Congress, declared war on Japan.
The Great Depression tested America’s political organizations like no other event in United States’ history except the Civil War. The most famous explanations of the period are friendly to Roosevelt and the New Deal and very critical of the Republican presidents of the 1920’s, bankers, and businessmen, whom they blame for the collapse. However, Amity Shlaes in her book, The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression, contests the received wisdom that the Great Depression occurred because capitalism failed, and that it ended because of Roosevelt’s New Deal. Shlaes, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and a syndicated financial columnist, argues that government action between 1929 and 1940 unnecessarily deepened and extended the Great Depression.
The great depression was a very sad and hard time. This was a time where people had little money, no available jobs and just had a hard time with everything. Many people had nd any way to make money whether it was cutting kid’s hair in neighborhood, picking fruit, selling iron cords house to house or even painting a house for 5 dollars. Even though this was a very hard time some people still had hope that things would get better. This was a really bad time until Franklin Roosevelt who was for the government supporting the Americans and not the other way around became president.
Franklin Roosevelt said, “When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on,” and it directly relates to the Great Depression. People thought that because of this huge downturn that they would not survive, but they had to “tie a knot in their rope,” and continue to try and survive. The Great Depression was a time of horror and failure. The giant Stock Market crash of the 1930’s triggered this major blow to the nations economy. This major devastation also leads many families into terrible poverty.
December 7, 1941 was a day of great tragedy. At 07:48 in the morning the Empire of Japan launched a surprise attack on the United States at the Pearl Harbor naval base in Hawaii. This attacked caused the destruction of seventeen ships and one hundred and eighty eight aircraft as well as killing two thousand four hundred and three Americans. The next day, President Franklin Roosevelt took to the microphone to address congress and the American people. This speech by President Roosevelt was effective in convincing congress to declare war on Japan by using ethos, pathos, and also logos.
Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7th, 1941 at approximately 7:55 am by the Japanese. The day after Pearl Harbor was bombed President Roosevelt spoke the words, “ a date which will live in infamy” he was discussing the day that Pearl Harbor was bombed. Around the world during this time, people were taking in the impacts of WWll. Japan also allied with Italy and Germany, all three countries were greedy for expansion, but Japan wanted oil as well, and the American Naval fleet was in the way. Japan attacked Pearl harbor because they felt that the Americans were standing in the way of their treasures and world expansion.
The Great Depression, beginning in the last few months of 1929, impacted the vast majority of people nationwide and worldwide. With millions of Americans unemployed and many in danger of losing their homes, they could no longer support their families. Children, if they were lucky, wore torn up ragged clothing to school and those who were not lucky remained without clothes. The food supply was scarce, and bread was the most that families could afford. Households would receive very limited rations of food, or small amounts of money to buy food.
After World War II began in 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt announced the neutrality of the United States. Many people in the United States thought that their country should stay out of the war. The people wanted the Allied Forces to have the victory. President Roosevelt also wanted an Allied victory because an Axis victory might endanger democracies everywhere. The United States equipped nations fighting the Axis with ships, tanks, aircraft, and other war materials. The Axis did not like this. Japan wanted to take over China, but China refused. China was led by Chiang Kai-Shek at the time. Japan wanted the United States to stop sending China supplies, but the United States refused. The United States opposed the expansion of Japan in Asia, so they cut off important exports to Japan.
World War II began on September 1, 1939. It all started when Hitler wanted to expand his territory, and he had planned to invade Poland on this day. Then two years later in 1941 Japan bombed America in which is known as Pearl Harbor and General Eisenhower entered America into World War II. America then joined the Allied powers and helped fight against the Axis powers. The major countries that took part as the Allied Powers in World War II was the United States of America, Great Britain, France, and Russia.Their main goal was to stick together and to defend each other from the attacks of the Axis Powers. The Axis powers consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan.General EIsenhower had been planning an attack on the beaches of Normandy in France.
December 7th, 1941 -. This was the date of one of the most important attacks on the United States in the history of America. This was the date of the Japanese attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor was the last straw that led to the United States joining World War II as part of the Allied Power. The bombing was in reaction to many economic sanctions that were placed on Japan, so the bombing was not just to make the United States mad.
Germany was economically frail subsequent to World War I. The Treaty of Versailles had held them accountable for the cause, and the Great Depression further deteriorated their condition. Germany was ambitious for power and resources. Envisioning world domination, Adolf Hitler, dictator of Nazi Germany, led his Nazi Party to invade Poland in 1939. France and Britain guaranteed to offer military support if Poland were to become attacked; they declared war, initiating World War II.
The Varied Impact of the Great Depression on American People The experiences of Americans during the Great Depression varied greatly. For most, the Great Depression was a time of hardships and trials. The way that people were tried were different though, some languished in a collapsed economy, while others had to struggle to make a living in the remote regions of the country. The years berween 1929 and 1933 were trying years for people throughout the world.
Before The Great Depression happened American family life was very different. In the early 1920’s child labor laws were enacted. These laws meant that the children were starting to either go to school or be left alone more often. The absence of children 's income started the poverty trend that continued into the depression. The upper class families were more accustomed to fathers
Many adolescents, In the Great Depression, received the full affects and suffered. Some were left hungry, impoverished, and hopeless, how are adolescents today compared? The 30’s were a time of great distress for many Americans. Events such as the stock market crash, an economy suffering from being inflated, overuse of credit, a farming crisis, and other events led America to the economic downfall known as the Great Depression. During the great depression, the unemployment was high, the wages were low, lines stretched around the city for food, families that lost their house had to live in makeshift homes in communities called hoovervilles, and children had to stop school to work for money. Teens effected by the Great Depression worked hard for low wages to try to put food on their family’s table. Today, teens are gluttonous and live a very care free life style with financial stability of their families. As you can see adolescents in the Great Depression differ much from today.
