Recommended: Characteristics of a hero in a book

The main character Lisa was introduced as being scared and confused. “But now all the adults are gone”.This represents her change because she had been just a normal child until her parents had died along with every other adults and this had made them all confused and scared with nobody to look after them. She had tried to avoid other characters because she knew they would try to steal from her. When Lisa was around her brother she was kind and brave.”Please tell me a story”. This represent her being brave and kind because she had taken over the parent role by telling him stories every night and she was kind because she had made up the stories and they all had happy endings.However as the story went on she became harsh. Yet around her friends and her brother she was caring. Lisa had became very responsible and smart as time continued. “I called this meeting because…”. This represents her being smart and responsible because she had developed a group that kept everyone safe around their neighborhood. Lisa had used her brain and came up with an amazing idea that could have been the only reason anyone in the neighborhood was still alive a year later.
At the beginning of the story everyone was just trying to survive. They had gotten food from wherever they could find it. “Lisa looked towards the farmhouse...”. This represents how they found food wherever they could because everyone was just trying to get the food they could from wherever they could and that’s what lisa was doing in this point in the story. They were scared and started to form gangs in order to get more food and safety. Yet as the story continued food was getting harder and harder to find. ...point of view. This proves it is a third person omniscient because it has shown both Tod’s actions and feelings. While the second quote had shown Lisa’s action and feelings.
This story had been put in and order in which the emotions were changing all the time. At one point Lisa’s neighborhood had been celebrating then the next day something terrible happened. “ The night ended with everyone still humming the tune as they went inside”. This represented the celebration. “ Smoke, everywhere, I need to get Tod out”. this represents the terrible event. This shows the change of emotions by first everyone had gone to bed proud and happy. the next morning the house caught on fire and Lisa was left on the streets. Another thing that came into play with the order was with every challenge and battle it would be harder and closer to defeat and the celebrations would be bigger.

Larson’s style is to add to irreverent stories together so that the two major protagonists highlight each other’s traits, one trait is their ambition. Both Holmes and Burnham are ambitious but in two different ways, which shows that ambition can make one or break one. How do they have different ambitions? Take their jobs as an example Burnham is an architect and Holmes is a doctor. When one has different jobs one strives for different things. Burnham in the novel strived for the Chicago’s World’s Exposition be more striking that the Exposition in Paris, as expressed by him saying, “Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably will themselves not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die” (Larson 1). By him saying “no little plans” he is trying to explain that the Exposition could have no limits. His vision is to create a “White City” and was going to accomplished that no matter what. His great ambition was to surpass Paris and at the end he did but Holmes had different plans. Usually the older family members are the person they can look up to. The other Wes’s mother was not there when the other Wes felt perplexed about his future and needed her to support and give him advises. Even though the other Wes’s mother moved around and tried to keep the other Wes from bad influences in the neighborhood, still, the other Wes dropped out of school and ended up in the prison. While the author Wes went to the private school every day with his friend Justin; the other Wes tried to skip school with his friend Woody. Moore says, “Wes had no intention of going to school. He was supposed to meet Woody later – they were going to skip school with some friends, stay at Wes’s house, and have a cookout” (59). This example shows that at the time the other Wes was not interested in school. Because Mary was busy at work, trying to support her son’s education, she had no time and energy to look after the other Wes. For this reason, she did not know how the other Wes was doing at school and had no idea that he was escaping school. She missed the opportunities to intervene in her son’s life and put him on the right track. Moreover, when the author was in the military school, the other Wes was dealing drugs to people in the streets and was already the father of a child. The incident that made the other Wes drop out of school was when he had a conflict with a guy. The other Wes was dating with the girl without knowing that she had a boyfriend. One night, her boyfriend found out her relationship with the other Wes and had a fight with him. During the fight, the other Wes chased the guy and shot him. One day while Essie Mae's parents were having an argument, she noticed that her mothers belly was getting bigger and bigger and her mom kept crying more and more. Then her mother had a baby, Junior, while the kids were out with their Uncle Ed. Her uncle took her to meet her other two uncles and she was stunned to learn that they were white. She was confused by this but when she asked her mom, Toosweet, about it her mom would not give her an answer one way or the other. Once her mom had the baby, her father started staying out late more often. Toosweet found out that her dad was seeing a woman named Florence. Not long after this, her mother was left to support her and her siblings when her father left. Her mother ended up having to move in with family until she could obtain a better paying job in the city. As her childhood went on she started school and was very good at her studies. When she was in the fourth grade, her mom started seeing a soldier named Raymond. Not too long after this, her mother got pregnant and had James. Her mother and Raymond had a rocky relationship. When James was born, Raymond's mother came and took the baby to raise because she said that raising four children was too much of a burden for a single parent to handle. Raymond went back to the service for a while but then when he came back he and Toosweet had another baby. Raymond's brothers helped him build a new house for them to live in and they brought James back to live with them. During this time Essie Mae was working for the Claiborne family and she was starting to see a different point of view on a lot of things in life. The Claiborne's treated her almost as an equal and encouraged her to better herself.

Mike Fink was an American frontiersman who is said to have beaten Davy Crockett in a shooting contest. The Harpe brothers were notorious rustlers and killers in the South. "After being felled by a bullet that paralyzed him, Big Harpe was decapitated; as the decapitation began, Big Harpe is reported to have said, "You're a God Damned rough butcher, but cut on and be damned" (Appel 70). The head was put on a post to warn other outlaws. The duality in man himself is a strong theme in the story. The men who fail to realize that man is a combination of good and evil are unable to succeed in the world around them. The Harps and to a lesser extent Mike Fink follow their most basic instincts to be frontiersmen. They are immersed completely in the lives they led and there is no other way to live. This inability to change is there downfall. The Harps are killed and Mike Fink is relegated to a lowly mail rider. This symbolizes the end of the lawless frontier.
