The G20 Summit’s that have taken place all over the world and each stop along the way has yielded some form of protest. The one that hits closest to home for Canadians is the G20 Summit that took place in Toronto, Ontario, on June 26-27, 2010. Protests were bound to happen in Toronto and the government believed they were prepared, police did what they felt was necessary, and the public has their own opinion of what went on during those summer days in 2010. People on each side of this conflict were going to be unhappy regardless of the outcome, and just like death and taxes, that was a guarantee. The G20 Summit’s that took place in Toronto were doomed right from the get go. According to a Maclean’s article from 2010, the Canadian Government spent upwards of $900 …show more content…
million on security for this event. Anytime you need to spend that much on security, you are anticipating issues.
These summits know that they are causing peaceful protests, but they also know they are causing violent protests and I believe they want both types to happen. The location of the summit and the date of the summit would not be released otherwise. If they wanted to have a quiet gathering with no issues and they still wanted to release this information, they would have the summits in a remote location, for example, Flin Flon, Manitoba, in February. I highly doubt there would be a whole lot of protesting, if this were the case. The violence in Seattle and London, was also mentioned in the Maclean’s article titled The Fallout from Toronto’s G20 Protests, you would think people would learn their lesson, but no they let that fall on the shoulders of the Toronto Police to take care of. Toronto Police were given the impossible task of keeping things calm during the G20 Summit, in the summer of 2010. Police arrested over 900 people by the end of the weekend (Maclean’s, 2010) and some claim to have had their Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms violated. Toronto Police “kettled” (Canadian Press, 2017), many people in the downtown
area 3G20 CASE STUDYdespite the weather conditions that weekend. These types of events/altercations with public cause for a discussion and change in policing style, good or bad. Although the police were following orders, these tactics have led to a mistrust among the citizens of Toronto and their local police department.Initially the public had a positive view on how the police handle things that weekend, but as time went on and more facts were laid out that positivity dwindled. According to a survey published in the Saturday Star showed that initially 73% agreed with how police handled the protests that weekend, but a year later that number had dropped to 41%. The public is the police and they will hold police accountable when they feel the need too. Citizens have the right to protest peacefully and should not have to fear those who work in public safety. The G20 Summit is a black eye in the storied history of the Toronto Police and the City of Toronto. There were many men and women on that weekend that protested peacefully and there were many men and women in uniform who were just following orders from above. The weekend was organized chaos, with no winn
Throughout history, the actions of governments have always been debated; however, occasionally there are certain events which spark much controversy, both at the time of the event and by historians today. One of these controversial acts was the invocation of the War Measures Act in 1970, an act which suspended the civil liberties of Canadian citizens. In October 1970, in what became known as the October Crisis, the Front de libération du Québec, (commonly known as the FLQ) which was a French Canadian organization advocating independence from Canada, kidnapped two politicians. This initiated a series of events, one of which was the invocation of the War Measures Act by Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau. Many historians argue that Trudeau was justified in invoking the War Measures Act because the October Crisis ended shortly after the Act was invoked. However, this argument is invalid as justification; primarily because the War Measures Act was an extreme overreaction by Trudeau, as the threat of the FLQ was largely small-scale, and the demise of the FLQ was impending with the rise of the Bloc Quebecois. Furthermore, the Act may have inspired Quebecers who favoured separatism, as they saw the government desperately employ the most extreme measure to stop the FLQ. Finally, the War Measures Act suspended the civil rights of citizens within a democracy, violating the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Since the Confederation of Canada until today, the province of Quebec has always wanted become its own nation by separating from Canada. As a result, Canada’s scariest ever terrorist group, the Front de Libération de Quebec (FLQ), wrote the darkest chapter in Canadian history, The October Crisis. To end the terror, Canadian Prime Minister, Trudeau, was forced to invoke the War Measures Act (WMA) during his term in 1970 which was flawed with disapproval and controversy since it was the first time the Act was used during peacetime. However, despite the criticism, his decision to invoke the War Measures Act was reasonable because of the fear presented by the FLQ, the public and governmental demands, and the end result of the October Crisis.
As for the protest of the WTO it was a prime example of how not to organize and conduct a protest. Although no individuals were seriously hurt or killed, property damage and the shut down of the city cost millions. On the first two days of what was supposed to be a three day meeting of the WTO they were prevented from meeting by the protesters.

...in reasons that most political violence occurs, and how to resolves these conflicts of political violence. After the research was completed, it is very apparent that Canada has had a very positive impact on Afghanistan. There are not many countries who would continue to stay in the country after completing their time in battle. Although Canada was involved in the war against Afghanistan, the country itself still found it mandatory for troops to continue to serve in Afghanistan as peace makers. Canada is known for peace and freedom and this exemplifies just that. Canada is putting forth time, effort, and money, to improve the living conditions of those in Afghanistan and helping them build a sustainable, peaceful life that they can carry out for years to come. Every country will have its own corruption; the answer is to begin from the basics. Peace and security.
War holds the approximate greatness of a black hole, and is alike one in many ways. From times immemorial writers have used imagery, language appealing to one or more of the 5 senses, irony, things that go against what is expected, and structure, the way the story is written, to protest war. This form of protest has most likely existed since any point in which the existence of both war and written language intersected, and were a part of human life. Through the use of imagery, irony and structure, writers protest war.
The Kyoto Protocol is a binding international agreement, which began in Kyoto, Japan in 1997. As of June 2013, there were a total of 192 parties participating in the Kyoto Protocol, Canada was no longer one of them. Canada was one of the first to sign the agreement, in 1998; more than 4 years later, Canada formally approved the Kyoto Accord, in 2002 ("CBC.ca - Timeline: Canada and Kyoto"). This meant Canada would have to decrease its emissions, by 6% in comparison to 1990 levels (461 Mt), by the year 2012. Despite some efforts, Canada failed to meet these requirements and in fact increased total emissions by roughly 24% by the year 2008. Canada formally withdrew from the Kyoto Accord in 2011, avoiding penalties and future detriments ("CBC News in Depth: Kyoto"). The withdrawal of Canada from the Kyoto Protocol was a good decision, the decrease in emissions was an unattainable goal, considering the cost, time, unfairness, dependency and technological advancement.
Canada as a country has a lot going for it. A high GNP, and high per capita income in international terms.... ... middle of paper ... ... With all the focus being on becoming a sovereign nation, the citizens are suffering.
Canadians have a strong sense of identity, especially when comes to the idea of peacekeeping. Peacekeeping is the number one priority that about 83% Canadians feels strongly about. Canada, as a country itself, plays a big role in the United Nations when discussing peacekeeping. Peacekeeping in Canada arose in the 1940s and was not initially intended to be peacekeeping but to create international laws for the United Nations to keep combat at a minimum and to resolve any issues without combat or force. During the 1950s, Canadian’s militaries began as a small peacekeeping operation that would later turn into a larger operation in the future. Many of Canadian’s’ public opinion regarding peacekeeping has changed over the course of time. Many attitudes toward peacekeeping find the foreign policy to be irrelevant, whereas some of the public eye views the foreign policy to have a better understanding and support the long-term perspective of peacekeeping. International Trade is another foreign policy that Canadians play a constructive role when dealing with world affairs. The largest trading partner with Canada is the United States. Between In North America, Canada and the United states have partnered themselves for a Free Trade Agreement. This trade agreement is called NAFTA, North American Free Trade Agreement, which allows free trade for goods and services to pass across the borders of Canada, United States and the country of Mexico. What is so significant about the NAFTA is that it removes tariffs on imports. For example, if a product were to be produced in the United States, it would not be treated as “foreign” by the other nations. To Canada, the NAFTA is a significant factor when targeting their economy. The NAFTA allows Canadians to have access to a larger market for goods, lower prices and it creates a greater economic
While the police may have attempted to stop protesting Thoreau states that this is a normal occurrence when a society attempted to ignore the wants of the government. “Men- serve the state with their conscience also, and so necessarily rests it for the most part; and they are commonly treated as enemies by it” (3). He gives light to the notion that revolting and sending unrest when you are unhappy with your government can often bring you negative light.
If a person want a peaceful protest, then sit at home and use social media to protest and wait for change. However, violent protest raises awareness and get the issue resolved much quicker than just holding hands and chanting. Violent Protest shows the anger and frustration of the person or people. It also shows how people are willing to risk their life by standing by something they believe in. When violence is used during a protest it gets the point across much quicker. Violence cannot be ignored and it forces the authorities or whomever to take notice.
In this article, the author of “Counterpoint: National Anthem Protests Are Unpatriotic and Disrespect the Nation's Military” is talking about the National Anthem Protests within the NFL, expressing his own feelings, he condones that those protests Are “Unpatriotic and Disrespect the Nation’s Military”. These protest are in fact disgraceful and disrespectful towards the American flag for which fellow Americans have put there lives on the line to help protect the people of the country and to keep this country to stay alive! One NFL football player known as Colin Kapernick, A African American, was ultimately the icon for the National Anthem Protest
There was total chaos on the roads, rallies and strikers in some places. They yelled with righteous indignation as well as raised signs to express their requirements for the government. I watched these picture on the TV on 18 December 2010 which called Arab Spring which began in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya was wave demonstrations against governments have never happened before . I think that there were two mainly causes to appear protest in some countries, and we will talk about effecting for some protest in this essay (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/arab_spring).
A blessing or a curse, you deside. In the next 20 years British Columbia's population is expected to flourish by approximately 40% and the power use is expected to expand by 50%. With the expected demand in power many have turned to the Site C Dam as an easy out. This project would be built on the Peace River and it would be the third dam on the river. This project is so big it would cost 7.9 billion dollars. Many would benefit from the project, but the same breath many would have a great deficiency. Which would cause political parties to favour either sides of the deal, such as the Green Party and the New Democratic Party. (NDP) More then 619 million dollars would benefit the government, the province, and the tax payers. More energy is expected to come due to the WAC Benette Dam's 5% reservoir. Even thou this project comes with some great benefits, it has some big draw backs, which also causes many to favour against. This project would cause permanent damage to the environment, land and animals.
In late 2013, my world completely changed. The news began showing violent protests happening in my hometown. It started over something as a demand for the corrupt mayor to step down, and has evolved into the heart wrenching beast that is civil war. Hindu-speaking laborers in North-East India began to experience attacks by rebel groups, claiming more than 300 lives and counting. Fortunately for myself and my immediate family, I live in the safety of a first-world country like Canada, and I can observe the events unfold from a distance. Checking the news daily and talking with relatives on the phone every weekend to get information from somebody who has seen the events in person. First of all, I have become a very strong patriot; I’m learning my country’s history, I passionately defend it if somebody makes a negative comment on it, and I even got a big flag on my wall.
