Part A: 1. A) As a Social Work student, I can fulfill the first goal of the Social Work program through a variety of means. The first goal of the Social Work program relates to the program preparing competent professionals in the field of Social Work (2016, p.1). I believe that by being politically active, on a micro mezzo and macro scale, I will be able to promote a greater sense of social justice in our society. It is important to follow legislation both locally and on a larger scale so that we can better assist the people in our society. Another way that I can fulfill the first goal of the program is by advocating endlessly for those clients who we serve. It is essential to speak out for those who might not be able to do so on their own. By advocating for those individuals, I feel as if I would fulfill the part of this goal that speaks to the promotion human rights (2016, p.1). B) The Social Work (BSW) Program was fully accredited in February of 2001 by the Council of Social Work Education (2016, p.1). …show more content…
The Code of Ethics is comprised of ethical standards that all social workers must adhere to (2016, p.2). This code makes sure that Social Workers are ethically responsible to clients, colleagues, in practice settings, as professionals, and to the broader society (2016). D) Plagiarism is considered to be, “the use of an author’s ideas and/or words without appropriate citation…” (2016, p.3). According to the Academic Honesty Policy at SUNY Plattsburgh, plagiarism in all forms is considered to be cheating (2016, p.3). Because the individual is not using their own thoughts, they are practically stealing someone else’s ideas and this is ethically wrong, both in society and especially in the field of Social
Apply their understanding of social, economic, and environmental justice to advocate for human rights at the individual and system level: making sure that I familiarize myself with current political events and how these events can affect our clients. Making sure we identify forms of oppression of our clients and discuss this with my supervisor, and identify common barriers to care.
This includes helping those who are in need as well as to fulfill roles in society. The social work paradigm includes values such as service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationship, integrity and competence (NASW, 2008). The main mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and to help everyone to meet their needs by using all of the social work values. The central attention to social work is the environmental forces that create, contribute to, and address problems in living. Therefore, as social workers we must help our clients overcome environmental forces by providing them with the resources that this country has to offer. Social workers have a duty to strive to end discrimination and other forms of injustices through “direct practice, community organizing, supervision, consultation administration, advocacy, social and political action, policy development and implementation, education, and research and evaluation” (NASW,
I first became interested in social work when I took a human rights course as part of my political science major requirements. Throughout the course, I was fascinated and disturbed by the historic oppression of many large groups in society, and I realized my interests lie outside of the political arena; thus, I double-majored in social policy & practice because of my desire to learn more about how to enhance human well-being, fight social injustice, and pursue social change. I soon realized I wanted to pursue graduate social work education in order to gain a more holistic understanding of social problems and human ailments and, in turn, better understand the best ways to fix them. My background in political science and social policy gives me a unique perspective on the field of social work, as I have gained immense knowledge on social issues, the law, and public policy that will be useful in my graduate school and professional endeavors to fight for social justice and human rights.
The National Association of Social Workers, NASW, considers the following as its six most core values; service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. The value of service is considered to be a core value because offering help to those in need is a crucial goal for all of those looking to practice in the field of Social Work. These services can include, but are not limited to, addressing social problems, helping those in need, and volunteering their knowledge to those who cannot otherwise afford such help. Social Justice is also an important core value for a Social Worker to develop. As a Social Worker one will encounter many people from several different walks of life, no two cases will ever be exactly the same. Some of these walks of life can leave a client vulnerable, defenseless, exploited, oppressed, and troubled. Therefore it is important to learn what Social Justice is, and how to help people from falling victim to injustice. Dignity and Worth of the Person is one of the most important values that one should uphold. People who need the help of a Social Worker many, but not all, times feel powerless, embarrassed, and worthless because they feel as though they cannot control aspects of their life an...

As a student who began her college career without specific objectives, I never thought I would be writing a personal statement for an application to receive a Master’s Degree in the social work profession. However, I feel now that there is no other future for me than that of offering my education and personal commitment to vulnerable individuals in order to stabilize their lives. After careful consideration of all areas of social work, I have found that my main area of interest is in providing resources and encouragement for individuals with disabilities to gain the freedom to live independent lifestyles without discrimination. My personal goal in this profession is to make every possible effort in assisting these individuals with finding the means to satisfy their needs.
"The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. A historic and defining feature of social work is the profession's focus on individual well-being in a social context and the well-being of society. Fundamental to social work is attention to the environmental forces that create, contribute to, and address problems in living" (NASW code of ethics).
This paper will explore what the primary mission of social work as a professional means to me. Through self-reflection of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, I will delve into why I chose social work as a career, the type of social worker I want to become, and ponder what challenges and obstacles may impede my chosen path.
Through the profession’s history, social workers have endeavored to guarantee that all individual have equal access to the resources and opportunities that allow them to meet their fundamental needs (NASW, 2017). Assembling resources, gathering public opinion, collaborating with agencies whose obligations are to serve the requirements of helpless populaces are ways social specialists champion the privileges of people, communities and society at large through active participation in the political process. Whether concerned about an individual’s needs or social policy reform, social workers are most frequently the voice for change and social justice (NASW, 2017). However, social workers can be empowered to move beyond micro policy advocacy and become active with mezzo policy advocacy in trying to change and develop
Galina Soracheva began her academic journey into the world of social work at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in the fall of 2015(G. Soracheva, personal communication, July 27, 2017). I attended the same program with Galina, so the following statements are verified by my own personal experience, as a BSW (Bachelor's of Social Work) graduate. In my opinion, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay BSW social work program can be considered the most well known social work program in the northeast Wisconsin area. During my time in the program, I learned how to initiate social change while maintaining a client centered perspective in practice.
When they are in need we must do everything in our power to make a change. Sometimes this involve advocating for them to see a change in social problems. The definition of a social worker states that they are trained person that carries out work with the aim of alleviating conditions of those in need (12). This often calls the need for social justice. After learning about social workers throughout history, I realize there’s multiple ways to help those in need (11). They’ve been able to implement social welfare for the public.
Social workers challenge social injustice. Social workers pursue social change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed individuals and groups of people. The meaning of this value is to ensure that individuals going into the social work profession pursue change, most importantly with, on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed individuals, and with groups of people. Additionally, this social work value forces social workers to constantly affect social change primarily focused upon issues of poverty, discrimination, and other forms of social injustice by creating activities that seek to promote sensitivity to and knowledge about oppression and cultural and ethnic
families, and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. A) Social workers “promote social change...the empowerment and liberation of people” (International federation Of Social Workers 2014, para 1);
Social workers level the playing field for individuals and families that have experienced hardships, terminal illnesses, mental health disorders and other adverse environmental situations that inhibit their ability to thrive within society. Social workers accomplish this by providing individuals and families the resources necessary to ensure that their needs are being met. Social workers serve an essential role to the functioning of our society, as they are committed and dedicated to increasing the quality of life for underprivileged community members. I fully intend on actively contributing to this endeavor, as I believe social workers have the responsibility to ensure that all community members have their needs met and the opportunity to
