The town known today underwent much historical importance and conflicts. The territory of Somerville was settled in 1629 and was part of Charlestown. Thomas Graves was an English surveyor led a scouting party of 100 Puritans from the settlement of Salem to construct
the site for the Great Migration of Puritans from England in 1629. He was drawn to the arrow Mishawum Peninsula between the Charles River and the Mystic River. This an other motivations are apart of this town's history. One of the town's biggest historic moments had to do with the American Revolutionary War. This was one of the first malicious act of the war,as it involved the theft of colonial gunpowder by British soldiers. This attack was on the Old Powder House that was sold to colonial government of Massachusetts in 1747. Now, this area is called Powder House Square. It had held the largest supply of gunpowder in Massachusetts, making it a target. On September 1, 1774, about 260 British regulars from the 4rth Regiment marched a mile under the command of Lieutenant Colonel George Maddison. Their gathering was done secretly up the Mystic River to a destination near Winter Hill. The gunpowder was removed. Rumors spread that there was bloodshed, so the American Patriots responded rapidly. They feared the actions of a war and many had to flee the area. Besides the battles that were fought, this area incurred many financial gains. When the Revolutionary War was over, people began to start new ventures that helped the economy grow. Somerville became a town full of new industries. Brickmaking, dairy farming, and transportation infrastructure began to make the area flourish. Along with this the town separated from Charlestown in 1842. Streetcar lines had been introduced to the city in the late 1800's, but there had been a decline in industrial sources and population. Now, the city has picked up. The telecommunication and biotechnology booms occurred in the mid to late 1990s had contributed to Somerville's increase in success. Housing demands have gone up since the population increase and had created the city that is known today. This city's history has shown that it can be an uphill battle to become successful.Through many hurdles, Somerville continues to hold up its history. John Winthrop was given the role of Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which was the first major settlement, and his original aim as governor of this land was to make the colony a democracy. The Massachusetts Bay Colony was a successful settlement thanks to the group of governors and leaders the colony had. Even though Winthrop did not succeed making the Massachusetts Bay Colony a democratic colony he was still a great leader because of his leadership skills, he was one of the most educated men in “the new world”, and his determination for success, which helped push the colony in a positive way.
The events that took place in Salem Massachusetts during 1692 through 1693, would forever define the colonial religious extremists, known as the Puritans. The Salem Witch Trials created a distinct nuance, that marked a dark period in American history. The dramatized version of the Witch Trials, The Crucible, resulted in a semi accurate representation of the historical events that occurred in Salem Massachusetts. The author Arthur Miller, wrote the playwright by incorporating factual content, as well as imaginary aspects that brought the characters of the Witch Trials to life.
Plymouth was settled in Massachusetts in 1620 by colonists who came over from England to escape religious persecution. Plymouth is known today for the Salem Witch Trials and the story of Anne Hutchins...
The economy was based on fishing, lumber, whaling, boat building, craftsmen, merchants, and small farms- the region utilized its natural resources (including the valuable Atlantic Ocean), which was shown by the presence of small villages and farms throughout New England. This allowed for life to revolve around the village community and the Church, since each family received several parcels of land for agricultural purposes. Under Puritanism, which controlled many aspects of the colonists’ daily life (including the economy), the Salem Witch Trials began in 1692. Several older women were accused of being witches by some young girls and, during the witch hunt, nineteen people were hanged and one was crushed to death under a rock. This occurred due to intensifying social conditions, inflicted by the Church and the Puritans in Massachusetts, and it created more of a distinction between classes, especially economically. It also should be noted that many of the economically prosperous colonists in Salem were accused of witchcraft- yet another example of economic stratification found in the New England
The colony was led by John Winthrop and was established in 1630. They were also Puritans who settled under the Massachusetts Bay Company, who dealt in trade. The colony settled in the Massachusetts Bay, with Boston becoming their largest city and capital. Unlike the Pilgrims of Plymouth they were non-separating Congregationalists for the simple fact that they believed the Church of England could be reformed. Their charter was unique because authority rested with a genral court of freeman, who were Puritan stock or property owners and later church members. They elected their governor and his assistants and later gained the power to pass their own laws and levy taxes. The freeman eventually became so large that it formed into a two-house legislature known as the House of Assistants, who were Lords, or of Royal descent, and the House of Deputies, who were Commons, or normal people not of Royal descent. Their government was a union of church and state and looked to make Puritanism the official religion with the Bible as the basis for the law. Much like the Pilgrims, they were very self-sufficient and did not have to rely on Native American help because they were able to grow many different crops of their own. This was very helpful because it ensured if one crop died, they had others they could rely on for survival. This was a very successful colony, arguably one of the most successful overall
The diary of Martha provides releveled information through the life of colonial Massachusetts. The land was a conflict in the 18th century. Martha's husband Ephraim Ballard was a surveyor as well as a mapmaker for most of his life, he was caught in the middle of a conflict over land that exploded in the years after the revolution. It was a time of geographic mobility (e.g., A Midwife's Tale). No one knew who own the land at that time, but it seems that they moved to get a better life for his
Instead of having scattered villages like the Virginia colony, the people of the Massachusetts Bay Colony organized communities that were small and built close together. These centers were built so that villagers were able to complete a wide range of duties such as cultivating land or fetching lumber from forests (Divine, 94). This system was especially efficient for finishing these important tasks and allowing time for other agendas that were important to the colonists. The setup of the town was not just efficient. Families were able to live close together which helped create a sense of community among the people. Taverns and meetinghouses were commonly built in town, giving the ...

During the time of the Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692, more than twenty people died in innocent death. All of those innocent people were accused of one thing, witchcraft. During 1692, in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts, many terrible events happened. A group of Puritans lived in Salem during this time. They had come from England, where they were prosecuted because of their religious beliefs.
At that time, Salem was a small town or village; it was a farming community that was only 550 of population. Their goal was that they want to be a model society on the hills. Not all of them were puritans because there were people that want a better life and want to live in a society out of England; their life in England were difficult. There were two groups in the village: those who were separatists and others that were puritans (those who believe in predetermination and follow the rules). Samuel Parris was a reverend that was the minister of the group of the separatist. He helped divide these two groups. The reverend Parris and his wife had 2 children living with them, who were Betty and Abigail. These two girls were the motive that the trials started. These girls screamed, rolled their eyes back into their heads, shook, twist...
In the 1600’s, many Puritans made the journey from Europe to America. As these people arrived on the east coast, they first settled along rivers and constructed towns. Most fled Europe because of religious persecution so they wished to have a permanent settlement where they could be free. Therefore, the Puritans established the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Throughout this colony and others, the Puritans influenced the social, economic, and political development of the New England colonies.
In conclusion Winthrop lead the Massachusetts Bay Colony down the right path, his leadership skills played a big role in the growth of the colony. It increased the size of the colony population and it brang it one step forward to being free from the church of England. Even though they ended up in a similar position as the church of england , they were able to break free from their rule and follow their own laws and religion in the new world. Although, democracy was in Winthrop’s primary target, it turned out unsuccessful but in the end it did not affect the colony financially or in any way did it hurt the

The New England colonies were mostly settled by English and white people. The fact that the New England colonies were settled by Puritan Separatists that was seeking for religious freedom. Roger Williams contributed to the development American democracy by claiming that women can run Sermon which leads to gender equality. Anne Hutchinson was a symbol of religious freedom. She was actively contributing many different religious events. The Salem Witchcraft Trials is the event of accusing nearly 200 people for participating in witchcraft which caused 25 deaths. Needless to say people were wrongly accused and the whole event shows the downfall of premature and fast paradigm shift no matter whether if
