In the theatrical play No Exit, by Jean-Paul Sartre, is set in 1944 and has an existential theme popularized by Sartre. This play describes the mysterious adventure of three characters, Garcin, Inez, and Estelle, who are trapped in a room by the Valet. By being trapped in this room, they are forced to confess their crimes. Annette Petrusso, author of “No Exit” an article written about the play, refers to the characters as cowards, or how they lack courage. Even though Petrusso makes a good point about how all of the characters show a cowardly trait, she leaves out the fact that each character becomes less of a coward throughout the play just by being trapped with each other. The setting of the play takes place in a place that could be resembled as purgatory or hell. Garcin, a newspaper editor from Rio de Janeiro, claims that the reason he was persecuted was because he was a pacifist. He was later forced to reveal how he “He? No, he hadn 't the guts for that. Still, he 'd every reason; we led him a dog 's life. As a matter of fact, he was run over by a tram. A silly sort of end... I was living with them; he was my cousin,” is what Inez had to say in response to Garcin’s question on her affair with Florence (Sartre). Her hatred for men only makes the situation in hell worse because Garcin is there and Inez feels that he is the reason she cannot get to Estelle. According to the Northern Existential Group, a group of people who analyze and discuss the meanings of plays, “Inez quickly realizes that the idea must be that ‘each of us will act as torturer of the other two” (Hell is other people?). “Character is what you are in the dark” is a quote from Dwight Lyman Moody, and it has various definitions. For instance, it can mean you are most yourself when no one is watching, dark and troubled times bring out a person's true nature, and your true nature is on the inside. This quote can be applied to Richard Connell’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game.” In this essay, I will explain why.
Seated in his fire-filled chair, the devil dominates the bottom-center of the painting. With the very dark lighting the mood towards this half of the painting is dark, gloomy, lonely, and unpleasing. Frankcen illustrates the true biblical message of hell. What is very interesting about this painting is how hell is extremely large, filled with a mass of people, and takes up about half of the painting. However, some of the people are babies. This alludes to the fact that some people are could possibly be born evil and that their fate is inevitable. A majority of the people set in hell are still looking up worshiping heaven while regretting their mistakes. The painter is trying to illustrate how many people do not make the right choices and end up miserable. The way Fans paints hell in this picture is very similar to the way Dante describes hell in this book The Inferno. Even though there are not nine layers of hell in this painting the descriptions are quite similar. The people standing in line waiting for their punishments, the dark gloomy vibe, and a mixture of young and old souls, are represented in the painting and in Dante’s story (1614-1702). God states that we treat each other with the love he gives to us as individuals; while us stating violent acts against love, fraud constituting a corruption and, greed becoming normal thing amongst people defines everything god had envisioned for mankind. Yet, while Inferno implies these moral arguments, it generally states very little about them. Dante discusses with each of the souls in the different circles of hell although it is not truly stated as to why they are specifically in that circle. Only because God justifies there sin belonged there. In the end, it declares that evil is evil, simply because it contradicts God’s will and justification, and since God is God, he thus does not need to be questioned about his morals. Dante’s journey of evil progressed as he winded down the depths of hell pitiless and was driven to make it to purgatory. Inferno is not the normal text that most people would read, then think about how it relates to todays morals; its intention is not to think about the evil discussed but, rather to emphasize the Christian beliefs that Dante followed through his journey.
There is no doubt that when bad things happen to people, they want to reflect their misery on others whom they think caused it, which is exactly what happened with Edmond Dantes, a once innocent man who became consumed by hatred.
It is with the second circle that the real tortures of Hell begin. There lie the most heavy-hearted criminals in all of Hell, those who died for true love. Here, those who could not control their sexual passion, are buffeted and whirled endlessly through the murky air by a great windstorm. This symbolizes their confusing of their reason by passion and lust. According to Dante, ?SEMIRAMIS is there, and DIDO, CLEOPATRA, HELLEN, ACHILLES, PARIS, and TRISTAN? (Alighieri 57).
To stand firm in one’s beliefs is a difficult task. In the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” by Ursula Le Guin, readers are left conflicted with the issue of conformity in a moral situation. Le Guin captures the audience with descriptive imagery of a beautiful city, “a clamor of bells that set the swallows soaring” and “the rigging of the boats in harbor sparkled with flags,” however, life isn’t as perfect as the sugar-coated descriptions. Hidden underneath the city in a filthy room, a child suffers the “abominable misery,” so the people of Omelas can live happily. The citizens have a choice to leave and go to a place that is unknown or they can stay in Omelas and live to the standards of the injustice city. Le Guin displays the theme of conformity through diction, mood, and symbolism.
In the Inferno we follow the journey of Dante as he wanders off the path of moral truth and into Hell. The Virgin Mary and Santa Lucia ask Beatrice, Dante’s deceased love, to send some help. Thus, Virgil comes to the rescue and essentially guides Dante through Hell and back to the mortal world from which he came. However, things begin to seem kind of odd. When reading the Inferno one may begin to question the way Dante describes Hell and the things that occur within, or even the things we have always believed about Hell. Despite the way it is described and well known in western civilization, Hell is not at all how we expect it to be because of Dante's use of irony throughout this poetic masterpiece.
Le Guin, the author paints a picture of a perfect society. But for this society to remain perfect, the people in Omelas treat one child terribly by locking it away in a closet. This treatment of the child became a social norm because it was good for the majority and only affected a small minority, the child. So, all of the other children in the society are brought to see the treatment of this child when they are “ready”. However, the parents can not know when their offspring are ready to see this kind of suffering. The citizens see the miserable child being violated and mistreated, but they do nothing because they care more about their own happiness than the child’s. The story ends with some people going against what was expected and walking away from the city leaving behind their homes. The story illustrates how hard it is to go against these established social norms. It does this by the people realizing the treatment of the child is wrong and walking away. The people show real courage going against something that they were taught was necessary, the suffering of the child, for the good life. This is a great example of how twisted socialization and social norms can

...me what his actions of made of it. Another example of existence preceding essence, Hell to him on Earth was an intricate visual of torture with no inherent meaning to him. Hell to Garcin now is the struggle to accept his fate. However, at the play’s end, he is ready to move on, just like Hamlet.
By saying this, it is evident that Francesca openly accepts Dante’s pity, so much so that she believes Dante deserves peace for it, revealing that she feels as though she has done nothing wrong. She also refers to her journey from life to Hell as “grievous”, implying that her punishment is far too severe for her, once again emphasizing how she considers herself innocent. This suggests that maybe Francesca feels as though her actions are justified because she was motivated by love, but it is selfish to think that one’s own happiness is more important than others. Dante is aware that justice is the true creator of Hell, and still shows sorrow for her and her lover, also suggesting that he might, like Francesca, value love more than justice. Dante knows that everyone in Hell is a sinner, including the pair of lovers, but he stills cannot help but to show pity towards
Three people, trapped in a lavish room, and stuck together for all of eternity. The only communication any of them can have is with the other members in this room. Not bad, right? Wrong. These three people exemplify one another’s imperfections and create a high level of torment with one another. Welcome to hell. Literally, this is the view of hell according to Jean-Paul Sartre in his play, “No Exit.” The characters are unknowingly alone, in terms of finding betterment within inner selves. The only thing the other people in the room create is anguish for one another. The epitome is although these characters are truly not alone, each is lonely and the hell in this is a timeless never ending torture in one another dragging each of themselves into furthered grief and despair. What is hell then? Simply, it is our current living. Sartre is clear in saying “hell is other people” (Sartre 45). The repulsiveness of human nature makes us all infinitely empty and it is something that is inescapable. Depression and loneliness are simple byproducts of acceptance of the ugliness of our world at least according to Sartre. Even if the concept of “hell is other people” is refuted, it does not place one’s own inner nature. Regardless, “No Exit” holds a message of being forever alone at least to achieve a state of happiness. Therefore, loneliness must be examined in three scopes sadness, love, and communication as to understand the purpose of this life, which John G. Mcgraw addresses in his article, “God and the Problem of Loneliness.”
“No Exit,” by Jean-Paul Sartre, is a play that illustrates three people’s transitions from wanting to be alone in Hell to needing the omnipresent “other” constantly by their sides. As the story progresses, the characters’ identities become more and more permanent and unchangeable. Soon Inez, Garcin, and Estelle live in the hope that they will obtain the other’s acceptance. These three characters cannot accept their existentialist condition: they are alone in their emotions, thoughts and fears. Consequently, they look to other people to give their past lives and present deaths meaning. Forever trapped in Hell, they are condemned to seek the other for meaning in their lives; even when given the chance to exit the room, the characters choose to stay with each other instead of facing uncertainty and the possibility of being detached from the stability of their relationships with the others. Without other people, the characters would have no reason to exist. Each characters’ significance depends on the other’s opinion of them; Garcin needs someone to deny his cowardliness, Inez yearns for Estelle’s love, and Estelle just wants passion with no commitment. This triangle of unending want, anguish and continual disillusionment because of the other is precisely Sartre’s definition of pure Hell.
He gives reason to fear and respect the law of God, lest eternal punishment be your only promise in the afterlife. These punishments are as relevant as can be, so he offers a very vivid picture of hell. The men that he puts in hell give it a realistic twist, enhancing the fear that is felt upon reading this work.

In the world of The Spanish Tragedy, the destiny of every single character is predetermined. It gives a reader a certain chill down his spine and makes him feel pity for those characters. The personages inside the play have no free will, and they don’t know they have no free will. The Spanish Tragedy presents a violent and bloody sequence of events that make a reader feel as if the entire play and the actions are pointless.
